      About
Most people know German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982) through his remarkably popular 1937 work for chorus and orchestra Carmina burana . Orff was born, lived, and died in Munich, receiving much of his early training at the Munich Academy under Kaminski. In 1924 he co-founded a school for gymnastics, music and dance, which led inevitably to his pedagogical devices for young children to make music, a method still widely practiced that utilizes simple percussion instruments. His adult works also sought musical primitivism, as represented by pulsing ostinatos that bear the influence of Stravinsky. All his major works, including

Having been involved in the foundation of the "Günther-Schule" for gymnastics, music and dance (1924), he became director of the department of "tänzerische Musikerziehung" [music and dance education]. One of Orff’s major achievements was the "Orff-Schulwerk
Music for Children", an educational method for children, published from 1930 to 1935. Spreading with an astonishing rapidity and intensity around the world, it is still successfully used (in pedagogy and therapy as well). Leading a master class for musical and dramatical composition at the Munich Hochschule für Musik from 1950 to 1960, he was appointed director of the new Orff Institute at the Mozarteum in Salzburg in 1961.

    Orff's Background
German composer and teacher Carl Orff was born in Munich on July 10, 1895. Although his father was a soldier, his family was musical. As a boy he studied piano, organ and cello. His first works were all vocal and published when he was 16 years old. He enrolled at the local Munich Academy of Music and graduated in 1914, aged 19. Three years later, however, he was called by the German army to fight in the First World War.

MUSIC EDUCATION: CLASSICAL COMPOSOR CARL ORFF
"Since the beginning of time, children have not liked to study. They would much rather play, and if you have their interests at heart, you will let them learn while they play; they will find that what they have mastered is child's play "
      ~ Carl Orff
      History of Orff Schulwerk
While being one of the most seminal composers of the 20th century, his greatest success and influence has been in the field of music education. Orff was the head of a department and co-founder of the Guenther School for gymnastics, music, and dance in Munich, where he worked with musical beginners. Having constant contact with children, this is where he developed his theories in music education. In pedagogical circles he is probably best remembered for his Schulwerk (1930-35), translated into English as Music for Children. Its simple musical instrumentation allowed even untutored child musicians to perform the piece with relative ease. Much of his life Orff worked with children, using music as an educational tool - both melody and rhythm are often determined by the words.

From 1919 onwards, Orff worked as a freelance composer in Munich, finding his own personal style in the years that followed up until 1931/32. Orff turned away from Strauss’ musical idiom to study the music of the 16th and 17th centuries. He also taught at the same time, K. Marx, W. Egk and H. Sutermeister being among his first pupils. For a short period during 1920, he himself continued to study under H. Kaminski. Both his songs and the singular choral work Des Turmes Auferstehung were already indicative of the autonomous nature of his future composing activity. In 1921, Curt Sachs drew Orff´s attention to Monteverdi. His arrangements of some of Monteverdi´s most outstanding works, beginning with Orpheus in 1923/24, were regarded as pioneering achievements both in terms of their practical performance and the history of music, and proved to be landmarks in the evolution of Orff´s musical style. As conductor of the Munich Bach Society during 1932 and 1933, Orff also experimented with concert performances, and more importantly with scenic stage performances of early music, notably the St. Luke Passion (1932), which was incorrectly attributed to Bach, and the Resurrection Story by Schütz (1933). These experiments demonstrated his marked leaning towards musical theatre, while also pointing in the direction of his own dramatic style. Werkbuch I, with its cantatas based on poems by Franz Werfel, and Werkbuch II, with choral movements based on passages taken from Bert Brecht (1930/31), as well as the choral works Catulli Carmina I and II (1931/32) were composed at this time. Orff took his leave of the Bach Society in the spring of 1933.

    Reviewed by David B. Dennis
(originally published by H-German on 25 January 1996) The description of composer Carl Orff's life in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians includes the following passage: "From 1930 to 1933 Orff was conductor of the Munich Bach Society.... He had already, in 1925, made adaptations for the stage of three works by Monteverdi, and all this work eventually culminated in the composition of Carmina Burana , produced in Frankfurt in 1937. During the war Orff remained in Germany, but only after 1945 could he develop his work fully." This entry belies the fact that Orff produced major works between 1939 and 1945, including Ein Sommernachtstraum Der Mond Catulli Carmina (1943), and Die Kluge (1943). It also contradicts the composer's own words: immediately after the premiere of Carmina Burana , Orff said to his publisher, "Everything I have written to date, and which you have, unfortunately, printed, can be destroyed. With Carmina Burana , my collected works begin." A comparable gap between 1933 and 1945 exists in the biographies of many German composers, musicians, music critics, and music scholars. Only recently has progress been made toward remedying this. Over the last decade, a handful of musicologists, music historians, and historians of the non-musical sort have started to address the impact National Socialist "Musikpolitik" had on German music life.

Composed in 1936, Orff's Carmina Burana Songs of the Beuern ) can be heard on stages, televisions, and silver screens across the globe. The song's text, Carmina Burana , was discovered in 1803 at the Monastery of Benediktbeuren near Munich as part of a collection of Latin poetry written by the goliards dating back to the 12th century. Written exclusively for entertainment, the Carmina Burana confronts issues similar to the issues we face today: love, sex, drinking, gambling, fate, and fortune. Because of their intended use, the text was written in vernacular Latin, medieval French, and German so as to be easily understood and accessible. When composing Carmina Burana

Orff believed that any child regardless of talent, cultural milieu, or physical constraint could partake of the joys of playing music with little or no traditional training. Perhaps best known as the composer of the scenic oratorio, Carmina Burana (1937), Orff had long been a proponent of alternative music instruction. He felt that the primal behaviors of children for instance, clapping, chanting, banging out a beat, and dancing were better educational building blocks than technical studies. He believed that once children learned to appreciate fundamental music-making through rhythmic activities and games, they could be taught to read and write notation.

We are affiliated to other Orff societies and organisations throughout the world and we regularly invite experts from abroad to lead courses in the UK. We have especially close ties with The Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria.
We have a substantial archive of articles and published material related to the Orff approach. These are of particular interest to educators and students. Members of the Orff Society (UK) receive:
  • A discount on all courses held in the UK
  • Notification of courses and events through the website and newsletters
  • The Orff Times which publishes articles and practical materials
  • Support, training and advice to develop music teaching skills.
