Jump to: navigation search Jacques Offenbach Jacques Offenbach 20 June , in Cologne 5 October , in Paris ) was a French composer and cellist of the Romantic era and one of the originators of the operetta form. Of German-Jewish descent, he was one of the most influential composers of popular music in Europe in the 19th century , and many of his works remain in the repertory. Offenbach's numerous operettas , such as Orpheus in the Underworld , and La belle H©l¨ne , were extremely popular in both France and the English-speaking world in the 1850s and 1860s. They combined political and cultural satire with witty grand opera parodies. His popularity in France waned in the 1870s after the fall of the Second Empire , and he fled France , but during the last years of his life, his popularity rebounded, and several of his operettas are still performed. While his name remains most closely associated with the French operetta and the Second Empire , it is Offenbach's one fully operatic masterpiece

Jacques Offenbach's real name was Jakob Wiener . He was born at Cologne, Germany in 1819, and died in Paris in 1880, aged sixty-one. He was the son of a Jewish cantor. Offenbach moved to Paris in 1833 to study the cello. He earned his living playing cello in the orchestra of the Opera Comique . In 1850 he became conductor of the Theatre Francais . Gradually, he became known to the public as a composer of light and humorous operettas. He founded a theatrical company in 1855, the Bouffes-Parisiens , which staged many of his operettas, and he managed the company for many years. He became a French citizen in 1860. In 1876, he toured the United States. He also toured Britain, and his many works had great popularity everywhere. Offenbach completed more than ninety works for the stage. His first success was Orpheus in the Underworld (1858). Classical Composer Biography: Jacques Offenbach
by Betty Fry
December 29, 2001
For my first article in this series on Classical Composers, I am going to begin with Jacques Offenbach, whose lovely melodies from 'The Tales of Hoffman' I am listening to even as I write these words. His work can be said to belong to the years between 1825 and 1900 which, by musicians, is referred to as the Romantic Era. Musical styles of this time can be described as rich and dramatic whether instrumental or vocal, and very often were songs, or music, that told a story. Although of German-Jewish origins, Offenbach has come to be thought of as essentially a French composer because of his great regard for Paris and its ways, to which he became addicted. He was born Jacob Eberst in 1819, but his father changed the family name to Offenbach after he had left his hometown Offenbach-am-Main and settled in Cologne, and it was there, while earning a living from composition, music teaching, and book binding that he became known to his colleagues as 'Der Offenbacher'. The tale is told of how, as a boy, Offenbach was taught to play the violin, but was discouraged from learning the cello. However he wanted to play the cello so much he would secretly practice on his father's instrument, and then one day amazed everyone by taking part in a string quartet when the real cellist failed to turn up. He went on to make it his particular instrument.

Among his works are (1858, revised 1874), (1864), and La vie parisienne , and helped establish musical comedy as a significant form, leading to Johann Strauss, Sullivan, and the great Broadway musicals. His only large-scale opera, Les contes d'Hoffmann , occupied him for many years, but he left it not quite finished at his death, and it was revised and partly scored by Guiraud.
