Nielson's music is characterized by its direct expression, clarity like that of a mountain spring, and deep humanity and warmth. In the second movement of his Third Symphony, a soprano and baritone sing wordless songs to each other across the expanse of the gently murmuring orchestra after the listeners have been swept away by a first movement that combines a glorious waltz-like theme and punctuations reminiscent of Beethoven's Symphony no. 3 (also partly in 3/4 time). There is humor and lyricism in the Concerto for Clarinet and a variety of moods and inventive sonorities that is unlike anyone else's in the piano music.

Carl Nielsen Danish Composer (1865-1931) Web Pages by Ray Ashley Carl August Nielsen was a Danish composer who wrote much during the early part of the twentieth century. Though he was the most important Danish Composer of his generation, and perhaps all time, most his music is still not widely known outside of Denmark. His six symphonies are the works that have given him his international reputation, but he also wrote a great deal of piano, organ, chamber, stage, and choral music, including two operas. His music had both a neo-classical and modern sound to it at the same time. It was also very individual in its use of progressive tonailty. Though many composers stretched tonality around that time, Nielsen used modulation in his own way to provide an impetus to a large scale piece of music. In contrast to traditional home-key concepts, the final key of a Nielsen piece was often arrived at by way of a great struggle, which in the end revealed its own logic. This is especially evident in all six of his symphonies. Nielsen had a unique melodic voice that had some of its basis in Scandinavian folk music. Often in his music, the major and minor thirds are used interchangibly, as are the major and minor sevenths. His blending of styles forshadowed pan-stylistic and totalist composers of the late 20th century such as Alfred Schnittke. Nielsen used elements of music from many eras that came before him, blended equally at times with modern stylings. He was also one of the century's great masters of counterpoint. He had a great appreciation and understanding of the music of Bach and Palestrina. It seems like a cannon or fugue can emerge at almost any moment in his music.

Reginald Spink, Hutchinson, 1953) that I put on the blog last week. I thought I'd reprint here Nielsen's essay "The Fullness of Time," which for me is one of the most radically sensible statements any twentieth-century composer made on the always fraught question of the old, the new, tradition, and innovation. The last two paragraphs are just as relevant — maybe more so — than they were in the 1920s. Take it away, Carl: It is right that the historian should indicate the summits of achievement in art (the poetry, architecture, and sculpture of ancient Greece, sixteenth- and eighteenth-century music, Renaissance painting, etc.); but in a sense this is of little use to us. The claims of life are stronger than the sublimest art; and even were we to agree that we had achieved the best and most beautiful it is possible to achieve, we should be impelled in the end, thirsting as we do more for life and experience than for perfection, to cry out: "Give us something else; give us something new; for Heaven's sake give us something bad, so long as we feel we are alive and active and not just passive admirers of tradition!"
