Carl first discovered music by experimenting with the sounds and pitches he heard when striking logs in a pile of firewood behind his home. He managed to learn the violin and piano as a child. He also learned how to play brass instruments , which led to a job as a bugler in the 16th Battalion at nearby Odense . He later studied violin and music theory at the Copenhagen Music Conservatory, but never took formal lessons in composition. Nonetheless, he began to compose. At first, he did not gain enough recognition for his works to support him. During the concert which saw the premiere of his first

Carl Nielsen was the 7th in a family of 12 children. His father’s name was Niels J¸rgensen. It was Danish tradition for a child to get his father’s first name as his surname , so Carl became Carl Nielsen (“son of Niels”). The family was very poor and Carl had to help in the home. During the school holidays he looked after the geese . His father, who was a simple painter, played the violin and cornet in the village band. Carl soon learned to play the violin and joined in with his father’s band. He listened to music by Haydn and Mozart and became very interested in general knowledge. All his life he tried to learn new languages and was interested in literature art and philosophy . He loved animals and the nature around him.

http://www.fuguemasters.com/nielsen.html
Sierra Chamber Society Program Notes Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) Quintet for Wind Instruments, Op.43 (1922) Carl was one of many children born to a poor housepainter on the Isle of Fyen. As a young boy, he worked as a shepherd to help support the family. He received violin lessons from the local schoolteacher, and played the cornet in a military band. In 1884, thanks in some part to the generosity of friends, Nielsen was able to attend the Royal Conservatory in Copenhagen, where he studied composition with Niels Gade. His musical career centered around Copenhagen, where he worked as an orchestra musician, a conductor, teacher, and finally Director of the Royal Conservatory. His compositions include operas, symphonies, symphonic poems and overtures, concerti, chamber music, piano music, organ music, songs, and choral works. In the realm of choral works, Nielsen composed a series of commemorative cantatas (though they span his career, he did not assign an opus number to any of them) for various civic organizations, including a Cantata for the 50th Anniversary of the Danish Cremation Union . His most often heard works are his six symphonies, the clarinet concerto, the flute concerto, and the Quintet for Wind Instruments.

NIELSEN, CARL BIOGRAPHY
The principal post-Romantic Danish composer, Carl Nielsen, was born in 1865, the son of a painter and village musician. Childhood experience as an amateur performer led to subsidised study at the Copenhagen Conservatory and a long career during which he developed his own personal style of composition, in particular in a series of important symphonies. Orchestral Music Nielsen wrote six symphonies, distinguished by the titles given them as well as in numbering. Of these the best known are Symphony No. 2, The Four Temperaments, and Symphony No. 4, The Inextinguishable. Symphony No. 5, written after the 1914-18 war, represents, in its two movements, the composer's struggle to develop new and stronger rhythms and more advanced harmony. His concertos for clarinet, for flute and for violin have also found a place, as has the overture taken from the opera Maskarade. Chamber Music Nielsen's 1922 Wind Quintet is a particularly pleasing element in wind chamber music repertoire, of greater interest than the composer's earlier string quartets.

Carl Nielsen, Danish Composer (1865-1931) by Knud Ketting "Everything in Funen is different from the rest of the world and whoever takes the trouble to listen will know. The bees hum in a way of their own with a special Funen accent, and when the horse whinnies and the red cows low, why, anybody can hear that it's quite different from anywhere else... The bells ring and the cocks crow in Funen dialect and a joyous symphony issues from all the birds' nests every time the mother feeds her young. The stillness sings the same tune, too, and even the trees dream and talk in their sleep with a Funen lilt."

Besides being a pioneer of electronic and note-written experimental composition, he played a decisive role in the development of a new instrumental performance practise within European composition, in which choices and creative collaboration was left to the performers. This began in Klavierstück XI in 1958 and became elaborated in works of the sixties such as Adieu and Zeitmasse and was continued in the works with "plus-minus" notation later in the same decade like Plus-Minus, Kurzwellen and Sternklang. These works still are a challenge to composers, as they show examples of how musical ideas can be notated in outline without sacrificing contemporary ways of musical collaboration in a teamwork.
