Conlon Nancarrow (1912 - 1997) was one of the most original composers of the twentieth century, devoting most of his composing to a series of dazzling Studies for player piano. About three quarters of the work employed canonic procedures in which lines of the music proceed independently in different simultaneous tempi. A series of electronic realizations were made for his Study No. 37 in order to add timbral variety and expose the work's temporal dissonance
Study No. 37
I first heard Nancarrow's music on KPFA The short Study No. 14 from the volume Nancarrow sent as a test of software environment and musical value. The piece is one of the early studies, there are two voices separated by register playing the same material in different keys producing a bitonal effect. The tempi of the two voices is in the ratio of 4:5. A tape was made with two synthesizers and sent to him, to see if he was curious to hear any of the Studies with different timbres. Nancarrow answered that when he had been composing Study No. 37

Conlon Nancarrow
Gavin Thomas introduces the work of Conlon Nancarrow (1912–1997).
  • Overview
Overview
For all the modern world’s obsession with technology, Conlon Nancarrow remains the only classical composer to have established a lasting reputation on the basis of music written almost entirely for a machine. Not only does his remarkable sequence of player-piano studies prove that it’s possible to do without human performers entirely, they also offer a compelling exploration of the myriad new structures and sonorities obtainable through mechanical means. Born in 1912 to a respectable family of Arkansas worthies, Nancarrow spent a wayward youth learning trumpet, developing a passion for jazz and determining to become a musician. In 1934, braving parental displeasure, he trooped off to Boston to study composition with arch-academics Roger Sessions and Walter Piston , an experience which seems to have borne little immediate fruit, although he would later emphasize the value of Sessions’ obsessive contrapuntal training.

Introduction
This is a list of polytempo music compositions, and books or articles that discuss polytempo music. The list is limited to those pieces in which the composer has notated the music by using two or more different and simultaneous tempo markings, and consequently, the duration of a given type of note (e.g. a quarter note) is not the same in all parts at some point in time. Here, "tempo marking" means a metronome marking or a tempo term (e.g. allegro or accelerando). Pieces for which more than one tempo might be perceived but for which all parts are written against a common tempo, no tempo markings are specified, or performers are instructed to deviate freely from specified tempi (e.g. as in rubato or senza tempo), have been excluded. More specifically:
  • Pieces where multi-rate effects are notated with tuplets against a global tempo as in Elliott Carter's String Quartet No. 5

Abstract
Biography
Betty Freeman was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1921 and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She was graduated from Wellesley in 1942, where she had studied music. She later took classes at the Juilliard Institute. Freeman began her activities as a philanthropist and supporter of musicians in 1961 by contributing to a young musician's legal defense. Since then, she has assisted more than 30 contemporary composers. Beginning in 1964, Freeman has served on the board of "Encounters," the Pasadena Art Museum's concert program, and beginning in 1981, she hosted her Monday Evening Musicales, a venue for the new works of composers, in her Beverly Hills home. She is currently on the board of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, having supported for over a decade the orchestra's New Music Group until its close in 1991. Betty Freeman is an accomplished photographer. Her exhibit "Music People," a collection of photographs of leading figures in the world of contemporary music, toured internationally and was published as a book entitled MUSIC PEOPLE AND OTHERS (1987). She also produced a documentary film about Harry Partch entitled THE DREAMER THAT REMAINS (1972).

The Music of Conlon Nancarrow
by Kyle Gann Samuel Conlon Nancarrow was born on the Arkansas side of Texarkana on 27 October 1912. John Cage had been born fifty-two days earlier in Los Angeles, Elliott Carter four years earlier in New York City; by the end of the century the three would have become the most influential American composers of their generation. Nancarrow's importance would manifest itself later than that of the other two, both of whom would figure in his career. Nancarrow's father, Samuel Charles Nancarrow, came from New York state, and worked in Philadelphia for Standard Oil. When Standard transferred him to Arkansas to manage a barrel factory, he relocated to Texarkana. The composer's mother, Myra nee Brady, was an Arkansas native. To avoid confusion between the Samuels, the first-born child was called Conlon - a last name from his mother's side of the family - from an early age. A younger brother, Charles, was born three years after Conlon. As one of the community's leading businessmen, the elder Nancarrow entered politics to protect the town's business interests, and served as mayor of Texarkana, Arkansas, from 1925 to 1930, resigning from his third two-year term for health reasons. Musical influences were not absent from the Nancarrow home. The house held a player piano (whose significance for Conlon would not emerge for many years), stocked with rolls of Chopin and light classical fare by composers such as Edward MacDowell. Nancarrow claims his family was uniformly tone deaf, although his father enjoyed singing "corny John McCormack songs" such as "Mother Machree." Charles adds, though, that the parents made sure the boys were exposed to Brahms and Beethoven. At the age of six, Conlon studied piano with some "horrible old spinster," who, in the hallowed tradition of such teachers, destroyed any enthusiasm he might have had. To escape her, he switched to trumpet, studied that instrument with a "nice old drunk," and began playing in the town band. Charles, whose musicality was expressed on the clarinet, remembers that his brother was a fantastic trumpet player with superb lip technique.

Experimental Arkansas Composer Audio Clips More Photos Links This is the beginning of a web page devoted to composer Conlon Nancarrow (1912 - 1997). He was born and raised in Texarkana, Arkansas and went on to be one of the most respected composers of "modern" art music of the 20th century. He focused nearly all of his musical energy on writing very rhythmically complex music for the player piano. These photos were taken by Janet Greeson while she and her husband were in Mexico City in 1984 when we spent a day interviewing Mr. Nancarrow at his pleasant home in a residential section of the city. I've also included some excerpts from the interview. To hear his music for player pianos you can visit Mullins Library on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas, which has a nice collection of his music in both recordings and scores. Also the German recording company Wergo has released three CD sets with most of his player piano music on them. Wergo 60165, 60166, 60168.
These are audio clips from our six hour long interview with Conlon Nancarrow in 1984. Feel free to email me if you want more access to some of the interview or the 50 odd photos we took:
