Wechseln zu: Navigation Suche Samuel Conlon Nancarrow 27. Oktober in Texarkana Arkansas 10.

The expatriate American experimentalist composer Conlon Nancarrow is increasingly recognized as having one of the most innovative musical minds of this century. His music, almost all written for player piano, is the most rhythmically complex ever written, couched in intricate contrapuntal systems using up to twelve different tempos at the same time. Yet despite its complexity, Nancarrow's music drew its early influence from the jazz pianism of Art Tatum and Earl Hines and from the rhythms of Indian music; Nancarrow's whirlwinds of notes are joyously physical in their energy. Composed in almost complete isolation from 1940, this music has achieved international fame only in the last few years. Born in 1912, the son of the mayor of Texarkana, Nancarrow fought in the Lincoln Brigade, then fled America to Mexico City to avoid being hounded for his former Communist affiliations. The author travelled to Mexico City to research Nancarrow's music and to discuss it with him. He analyses sixty-five works, virtually the composer's complete output, and includes a biographical chapter containing much information never before published.

Nancarrow was born in Texarkana, Arkansas. He played trumpet in a jazz band in his youth, before studying music first in Cincinnati, Ohio and later in Boston, Massachusetts with Roger Sessions, Walter Piston and Nicolas Slonimsky. He met Arnold Schoenberg during that composer's brief stay in Boston in 1933.

Born in Texarkana, Arkansas in 1912, Nancarrow was active in his early years as a trumpeter, playing jazz and other types of popular music. He attended the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music from 1929-32, and later studied composition and counterpoint in Boston with Nicolas Slonimsky, Walter Piston, and Roger Sessions (1933-36). He values most his work with Sessions: "The only formal studies I did that were important were the studies I had in strict counterpoint with Roger Sessions. That was the only formal training I ever had. And they were rigid! I'd do this strict counterpoint exercise, and then I'd take a piece of my music and say to him, 'What do you think of this?' 'Very interesting; where's your counterpoint exercise?'" Nancarrow also cites Bach and Stravinsky as seminal influences. In 1937 Nancarrow enlisted in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War. On his return to the United States in 1939 he became involved in the New York new music scene, contributing several reviews to Modern Music and associating with other composers such as Elliot Carter and Aaron Copland.
Nancarrow was a dedicated socialist, which made him politically unacceptable in the United States. This was brought plainly home when he applied for a passport and was denied. Angry at such treatment, he moved to Mexico City in the early 1940s, becoming a Mexican citizen in 1956. He died there in 1997.

Last night, I greatly enjoyed the Arditti recording of Conlon Nancarrow's String Quartet No. 1 . I was all ready to blog about how in contrast, Nancarrow's pieces for player piano, although fascinating, are tedious to listen to since they are so monochromatic. But I've just heard Study No. 51 , with its crescendo in density and I withdraw my objection. I'm starting to love this stuff, regardless of instrumentation. NANCARROW, CONLON BIOGRAPHY
Born in Arkansas, and a pupil of Nicolas Slonimsky, Walter Piston and Roger Sessions, Conlon Nancarrow fought with the Republicans in Spain, and finding a cool reception on his return to America, moved to Mexico, where he became a citizen. Early interest in jazz and Bach eventually led to experimental work, not all of which was playable, a problem partly resolved by the construction of a player piano. Interest in the live performance of his work in the United States returned only in the last decade or so of his life.

CONLON NANCARROW:
PERSONALITY and POLYPHONY
by Tom Rodwell (August 1999)
Conlon Nancarrow, (1912-1997) was born in Texarkana, studied composition from an early age, (with Slonimsky, Sessions, and Piston privately in Boston) and played jazz trumpet in local bar bands. He joined the Lincoln Brigade and fought Franco's fascists in 1930's Spain, also becoming a member of the Communist Party. Upon his return to the USA, he resumed composition, and associated with other new radicals in the New York scene, including John Cage and life-long friend Elliot Carter. Nancarrow's political leanings gradually attracted the interest of the state, and he was refused a passport upon application in 1940. Nancarrow moved to Mexico City, home until his death of heart failure at age eighty four. Early performances of his highly complex work were failures, often due to incompetent musicians, and his attempts to relaunch his compositional career ground to a halt in the (understandably) underfunded and ill-equipped Mexican contemporary music scene of the day. Frustrated by years of indifference and incompetence, Nancarrow withdrew from 'normal' musical circles, and, inspired by the writings of Henry Cowell, ordered an Ampico Reproducing Piano and the required hole-punching equipment for the pianola rolls. The player piano became his sole musical outlet, and he wrote over 50 'Studies' exclusively for the mechanical instruments until a sudden explosion of commissions in the 1980's and 1990's saw live musicians once again tackle his formidably polyrhythmic works.

  • Composer Composer Conlon Nancarrow produced a body of work that is among the most challenging in twentieth-century music. He composed work for the player piano, an instrument that was already oldfashioned when he took it up in 1947. It took nearly half a century for Studies for Player Piano —or their composer—to achieve general recognition among musicians or the public. In 1982, Nancarrow was not mentioned in the Biographical Dictionary of American Composers. Within a few years, however, musicians such as Gyorgy Ligeti were comparing Nancarrow to Anton Webern and Charles Ives. Describing Nancarrow's achievement, England's Independent wrote: "He took a predominantly entertainment medium ... as the vehicle for the most far-reaching rhythmic explorations in the entire history of music." Conlon Nancarrow was born and raised in Texarkana, Arkansas. The future composer's family was anything but musical. He described them to Cole Gagne and Tracy Caras as "tone deaf... but great music lovers." He had piano lessons as a child but didn't like his teacher—"some horrible old spinster" as he described her to William Duckworth in

"One of the most fascinating chapters in the history of the piano of the 20th century were Conlon Nancarrow's studies for player piano. After American-born Nancarrow returned from the Spanish Civil War, fighting the fascists in the thirties, he emigrated to Mexico and began to compose for the already out-of-style player piano. Tempos of 200 beats per second are not unusual, or chords made up of dozens of notes, all impossible for a human to play but as a result of his innovative use of player piano rolls he could make the impossible possible. The instrument used was Nancarrow's own Bösendorfer Ampico grand piano."
