I am a lyric soprano. Although I have performed art songs and operatic arias in recitals around the United States, my interest has turned towards the concert performance of Negro Spirituals. I have begun presenting recitals and lecture recitals on spirituals. Most of this activity is part of my research project called The Art of the Negro Spiritual . (More about this below.) My most recent recital was an Art of the Negro Spiritual (ANS) program including settings by Hall Johnson, H. T. Burleigh, R. Nathaniel Dett, Undine Smith Moore, Moses Hogan, Robert L. Morris, Florence Price, Hale Smith, Julia Perry, Betty Jackson King, Maria Thompson Corley, Thomas Kerr, and Uzee Brown. The next ANS recital is scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2006, at 4:00 p.m. The location will be announced soon. Again, I am pleased to be joined by pianist Timothy Newton. This is a program of spirituals set into song cycles by Roland Hayes ( The Life of Christ ), John Carter ( Cantata ), Margaret Bonds ( Five Creek-Freedmen Spirituals ) and Robert L. Morris (

Be CONSISTENT!
Many students have probably not had much experience writing essays on music, a kind of writing that has its own stylistic conventions. Humanistic writing on music usually follows the Turabian guide (which is based on The Chicago Manual of Style ), and Turabian will be followed in most of the history courses offered at Western. No matter what style guide is followed, it is important to be consistent and clear, so that the reader can easily track down your references.

Greetings!! My name is Randye Jones. I am a native of Greensboro, North Carolina. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Bennett College in Greensboro. While there, my academic achievements included being named to “Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.” I completed my Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Florida State University, Tallahassee, where I studied with Barbara Ford and Enrico Di Giuseppe. I served as a music cataloger for the Florida State University Libraries before accepting a library manager position at the George Washington University, Washington, D.C. I recently joined the staff at Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, as supervisor of the library's listening room. My professional affiliations include: the National Association of Negro Musicians, the Recording Academy, and the Washington Area Music Association. While my current base of operations is in the Midwestern United States, my travels take me to performance venues throughout the country, and I anticipate opportunities to perform and lecture internationally. I am a lyric soprano. Although I have performed art songs and operatic arias in recitals around the United States, my interest has turned towards the concert performance of Negro Spirituals. I have begun presenting recitals and lecture recitals on spirituals. Most of this activity is part of my research project called The Art of the Negro Spiritual. (More about this below.)

http://www.zenobiaperry.org/biography.html
Composer and pianist ZENOBIA POWELL PERRY was born on October 3, 1908,
Her compositions have been performed by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, West Virginia University Band and Orchestra, and other performing ensembles, as well as by many singers. Her opera, Tawawa House , based on the history of Wilberforce, Ohio, completed with a commission by the Ohio Arts Council/Ohio Humanities Joint Program, was premiered in 1987.
Her hometown, the all black town of Boley, Oklahoma, provided a lifetime of inspiration and material for her work as a composer, long after the town, known for its black ownership, self-governance and autonomy, had been destroyed by Jim Crow politics. The history of Oklahoma and in general, the history of the United States, in the early 20 th century, as it related to race relations, had a tremendous impact of Zenobia Perry's life. The philosophical outlook and political activism of Booker T. Washington, with whom she had a life-long family connection, was a major influence in her life and the institutions where she studied and served as faculty and administrator.
Zenobia Powell Perry's life story highlights a need to re-evaluate what factors determine a successful career as a composer in the United States in the twentieth century. She was not born into a family of musicians; she was not a child prodigy; and she has never lived in a major urban center. Being black, Creek Indian, mid-western, as well as female, contribute to a fascinating combination of factors which make her music reflective of a unique perspective, full of originality and inventiveness. Although she has not sought fame as a composer, her goal was to serve her community as a musician.

Subject: Women Composers results
First, thank you all for your GENEROUS responses to my request for
information anout women composers of choral music. What a thrill to
receive responses from conductors and women composers from all over the
world! Here is the compilation of what was sent plus one or two
additions. There are 5 sections: COMPOSERS; LIVING COMPOSERS w/CONTACT;
GENERAL WEB SITES; PUBLISHERS; BOOKS; and OTHER REFERENCES (lectures,
etc.). I'm sure I've left some out of the living composers category but
these were just a few who offered other means of contact (there are more copmosers subscribed to this list). And the dates were included only for the few for whom I had definite dates.
