Track Composer Performer Opera Operas (80 mp3 files) Other (21 mp3 files) The son of a doctor and the oldest of five children, he started to study music at a very early age under Marco Antonio Ingegneri, maestro di cappella at the cathedral in Cremona. When he was fifteen he gave proof of his exceptional talents publishing the Sacrae Cantiunculae for three voices, followed one year later by the Spiritual Madrigals for four voices and in 1584 by the Canzonette for three voices. With the First Book of Madrigals (1587) he became famous throughout Europe and rightly won a place among the greatest European composers of the day. In 1590 in Mantua he became a viol player and cantor in the music cappella of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga. The duke was a lover of the arts and made his city into one of the most active centres of culture of the time. As part of the duke's retinue, he travelled to Hungary in 1595 for the campaign against the Turks and in 1599 went to Flanders. Residence in the cultured, refined atmosphere of the Gonzaga court and these journeys gave him the opportunity to mature his artistic education and to enrich his experience through first-hand knowledge of different musical backgrounds which at the time were among the most active in Europe.

There were two major types of vocal music at that time: popular songs on mundane themes and music intended to accompany church services. The former group included fairly simple settings for solo voice and madrigals, which set music for two or more independent voice parts. Church music had evolved by the early 16th century into an elaborate polyphony. Josquin Desprez and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina were the foremost composers in this style, in which four or more parts develop musical lines from the tunes to popular and even bawdy songs. Each of the four or more parts wove these tunes together in a dense counterpoint, with no part assigned a primary melodic or harmonic function. The music displayed the consummate skills of their composers, and sounded breathtakingly beautiful when done by a capable choir. However, by the late 16th century, this type of contrapuntal music had become too difficult for most church choirs to sing and most parishioners to understand.

More Quick Guides Mount St. Mary’s University’s Chorale to Perform Excerpts from Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo Mount St. Mary’s University’s Chorale will celebrate the 400 th anniversary of the composition of the world’s first opera, Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, on Thursday, November 29. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception on the Mount campus. Admission is free. Joining the Mount Chorale will be an ensemble of early instrumental and vocal specialists from Baltimore for a performance of excerpts from Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo and other works. Monteverdi composed his landmark opera in 1607 for his employers at the court of Mantua. It is generally considered the first completely developed opera in history, a masterpiece that built upon the experiments in musical drama presented in Florence eight years earlier. The performers will present the opera’s prologue and second act in an unstaged performance, as well as several of Monteverdi’s five-voice madrigals. The pivotal act focuses on the wedding festivities of the mythological Orpheus, who learns of the snakebite death of his bride Eurydice and then vows to travel to the underworld and plead for her release. The ensemble, led by Dr. Andrew Rosenfeld, associate professor at the Mount, will be composed of vocal soloists performing the roles of Orpheus, the Messenger, and Orpheus’ companions; the Mount Chorale will perform the role of the shepherds and wedding guests. The instrumental ensemble, directed by William Simms, lecturer in guitar at the Mount, will include period violins and cello, viol da gamba, and a continuo group of harpsichord, portative organ, and Simms on the Renaissance theorbo, or arch lute.
