B ... Z CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI (1567- 1643). Italian composer. Leading composer of the late Renaissance and Early Baroque, and the first great composer of operas. Although Monteverdi can be viewed as both a composer of the Renaissance and of the Baroque, there is a continuity that runs through his works in both styles. Monteverdi was a dramatic composer, bringing a depth of meaning from the text he set that turned each of his pieces into a convincing musical and dramatic statement. Monteverdi's career began at an early age. He published his first pieces, a collection of three-voice motets, at the age of fifteen. By 1591, when he went to Mantua as a musician for the Gonzaga court, he had already published books of "spritual madrigals" (1583), canzonettas (1584) and his first two books of madrigals (1587 and 1590). In Mantua he continued writing madrigals, and in 1607 produced his first work in the new genre of opera, his setting of Orfeo. In 1613, he was appointed maestro di cappella at St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. He remained in Venice for the rest of his life, writing music in all genres, including his final opera, L'incoronazione di Poppea (1642). Monteverdi wrote in a style that he called the seconda prattica, a description he used to separate himself from the more conservative tradition of Palestrina and his contemporaries. For Monteverdi, the starting point was always the words.

Music in the Renaissance

Claudio Monteverdi displayed a talent for music early in life, studying at Cremona Cathedral and publishing his first compositions at age fifteen. By the time he was twenty, he had written two books of madrigals and was an established composer.
In Monteverdi's time, Cremona was already famous as a center of musical instrument manufacture, especially violins
opera
Orfeo , based on the story of Orpheus, the legendary hero of Greek mythology who sang and played the lyre so wonderfully that animals, trees, and rocks were moved to dance. When a snake killed Orpheus' wife Eurydice, he followed her to the Underworld and, with music and song, persuaded Hades to release her. In the opera, choruses and dances are interspersed with arias and recitatives, and Monteverdi's instrumental score is one of the first in which exact instrumentation is marked. It also demonstrated his skill at crafting melodic passages that complemented the texts, adding rhythms, harmonies, and combinations of instruments that showed an extraordinary sensitivity to the meaning of words. He studied with Ingegneri, maestro di cappella at Cremona Cathedral, and published several books of motets and madrigals before going to Mantua in about 1591 to serve as a string player at the court of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga. There he came under the influence of Giaches de Wert, whom he failed to succeed as maestro di cappella in 1596. In 1599 he married Claudia de Cattaneis, a court singer, who bore him three children, and two years later he was appointed maestro di cappella on Pallavicino's death. Monteverdi became known as a leading exponent of the modern approach to harmony and text expression. In 1607 his first opera, Orfeo, was produced in Mantua, followed in 1608 by Arianna. Disenchanted with Mantua, he then retumed to Cremona, but failed to secure his release from the Gonzaga family until 1612, when Duke Vincenzo died. The dedication to Pope Paul V of a grand collection of church music known as the Vespers (1610) had already indicated an outwardlooking ambition, and in 1613 Monteverdi was appointed maestro di cappella at St. Mark's, Venice. There Monteverdi was active in reorganizing and improving the cappella as well as writing music for it, but he was also able to accept commissions from elsewhere, including some from Mantua, for example the ballet Tirsi e Clori (1616) and an opera, La finta pazza Licori (1627, not performed, now lost).

Claudio Monteverdi: Innovator and madrigalist 1567-1643
In about 1800, Ludwig van Beethoven began forcing music into a new era, one of more daring harmony and greater emotional impact than had been fashionable in the previous few decades. Two hundred years earlier, Claudio Monteverdi had taken on exactly that same task and accomplished it brilliantly. Beethoven is a classical superstar, known even to people who dislike classical music. But Monteverdi has not won similar popularity, although he was an innovative genius with creative powers comparable to Beethoven's. Where to begin an appreciation of Monteverdi's work? Opera? He did not write the first opera, but he did write the first operatic masterpiece, ``L'Orfeo.'' Church music? Here Monteverdi created a distinguished body of work using all the latest techniques. But other well-known composers have written great operas and sacred music. The one genre to which Monteverdi applied himself with distinction but without competition from other enormously popular composers is the madrigal. Monteverdi wasn't the first or only great madrigal composer. In fact, he was one of the last; the madrigal fad died about the same time as Monteverdi (1643 is the composer's death year; madrigals have no tombstone but sputtered out in the mid-17th century).

      About
Though many of his pieces were composed in the early seventeenth century, Claudio Monteverdi wrote music to which modern audiences can still relate. His progressive mind led to breakthroughs in compositional techniques, even while the musical materials he worked with gave his compositions an ancient feel, including melodies based in the austere sounding scales of the Medieval and Renaissance eras. He unified music and drama in

    Claudio Monteverdi Biography
Portrait of Claudio Monteverdi in Venice, 1640, by Bernardo Strozzi Claudio Monteverdi Italian composer violinist and singer His work marks the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music . During his long life he produced work that can be classified in both categories, and he was one of the most significant revolutionaries that brought about the change in style. Monteverdi wrote the earliest dramatically viable opera Orfeo , and was fortunate enough to enjoy fame during his lifetime. He was born in Cremona in northern Italy. In childhood he studied with Marc Antonio Ingegneri , who was maestro di cappella motets and sacred madrigals he produced his first book of secular madrigals, and shortly thereafter began to look for work outside of his native town. In 1590 Monteverdi began working at the court in Mantua as a vocalist and viol player, and by 1602 he had become conductor there. Until his fortieth birthday he mainly worked on
