The history of Felix Mendelssohn. His different works, where he studied, his teachings, who he played for, his family, etc.
Felix Mendelssohn was born on 3 February in 1809 in Hamburg Germany. Parents are Abraham and Lea Salomon Mendelssohn from whom he took his first piano lessons. His father was a wealthy banker. Felix's grandfather was Moses Mendelssohn who was a Jewish philosopher. Felix full name was Jakob Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Felix had one brother and two sisters. The name Bartholdy was added to his name to benefit the family. A family member with the last name Bartholdy left inherited property along the river Spree to the family. However, the German Composer is known for his original name Felix Mendelssohn. People often referred to Felix as the Mozart of the nineteenth century. During Mendelssohn childhood his family converted from Judaism to Protestantism. The children were baptized as Lutheran Christian. In 1811, during the French occupation of Hamburg, the family had moved to Berlin. Felix's first public appearance was at the age of nine. Felix played the piano. In 1821, Mendelssohn was taken to Weimar to meet J.W. Von Goethe and a remarkable friendship developed between the aging poet and the 12-year-old musician.

(more info) Felix Mendelssohn, grandson of the distinguished Jewish thinker Moses Mendelssohn, the additional surname Bartholdy adopted on his conversion to Christianity, was born in Hamburg, the son of a banker. The family moved to Berlin, where Mendelssohn was brought up, able to associate with a cultured circle of family friends. He was associated with the revival of public interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and in the early 1830s travelled abroad for his education, spending time in Italy and also visiting England, Wales and Scotland. He was later conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, where he also established a Conservatory, his stay there interrupted briefly by a return to Berlin. He died in Leipzig in 1847. Prolific and precocious, Mendelssohn had many gifts, musically as composer, conductor and pianist. His style of composition combined something of the economy of means of the classical period with the romanticism of a later age.

Felix Mendelssohn: Musical Genius and Jewish Casualty
By Rabbi Samuel M. Stahl
Several years ago, Jiri Weil, a Czech Jewish writer, penned a novel titled, Mendelssohn on the Roof . During the Nazi occupation of Prague , Weil graphically portrayed an ambitious and inspiring S.S. officer. This officer had received orders to remove the statue of the Jew, Felix Mendelssohn Richard Wagner This story conveys a double irony. First of all, Wagner was not only not a Jew. He was also a rabid anti-Semite . He wrote scathing attacks on Jews, especially Jewish musicians. Not surprisingly, Wagner was favorite musician. In his prolific writings, Wagner even made disparaging comments about Felix Mendelssohn. He tried to prove that the life and works of Mendelssohn clearly demonstrate that no Jew, however gifted, cultured, and honorable, could create art that moved the heart and soul. Moses Mendelssohn , was an eminent rabbi and philosopher. Moses had urged German Jews, upon leaving the ghetto, to stay faithful to Judaism , while embracing German culture and thought. In fact, he remained a practicing

Choosing Wedding Music - The Recessional
Posted by under Handel, George Frideric Seasonal/ Special Occasions Mendelssohn, Felix No Comments After you have said your vows, signed the register and enjoyed the fabulous music that you have chosen for your ceremony, all that is left to do is triumphantly walk (or run) down the aisle. And of course, you will need the perfect piece of music to do so! Here are just a few examples of pieces regularly chosen for the recessional. Mendelssohn: Wedding March from
Midsummer
. Originally intended as a processional (and not intended for use in a real ceremony at all), this piece is very commonly used as a recessional.

A fanfare for Felix Mendelssohn
05:18 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 By SCOTT CANTRELL / Classical Music Critic
Published in The Dallas Morning News on Aug. 25, 2003. In an age when classical musicians were as famous as today's movie stars, Felix Mendelssohn may have been the most famous of all. He was a child prodigy even more brilliant than Mozart. He was hailed by Robert Schumann, among others, as the pre-eminent German composer of his day. File Composer Felix Mendelssohn As conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, he virtually created the concept of the modern symphony concert and the modern conductor. At age 20, he conducted a performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion that helped spark a great revival of the composer's music. A skilled pianist and organist, he founded the Leipzig Conservatory. Born to a well-to-do and cultivated family, he spoke multiple languages and painted with skill. And he knew everybody, from Goethe to Queen Victoria, plus, of course, virtually every important musician of the age. Mendelssohn's death, at age 38, was lamented in at least one journal as the "eclipse of music."
