About Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg, the son of a banker, Abraham, who was himself the son of the famous Jewish philosopher, Moses Mendelssohn. Felix's family, however, converted to Lutheranism, and moved to Berlin in 1812. His sister was Fanny Mendelssohn (later Fanny Hensel), who was a well known pianist and amateur composer herself. Mendelssohn began taking piano lessons from his mother when he was six, and at seven was tutored by Marie Bigot in Paris. From 1817 he studied composition with Carl Friedrich Zelter in Berlin. He probably made his first public concert appearance at the age of nine, when he participated in a chamber music concert. He was also a prolific composer as a child, writing his first published work, a piano quartet, by the time he was thirteen. The elderly Goethe met the young Mendelssohn and took quite a shine to him, saying to him "When I am sad, come and cheer me with your playing." As a teenager, his works were performed at home with a private orchestra for the elites and intellectuals of Berlin. Mendelssohn wrote his first twelve symphonies in his early teens (more specifically, from ages twelve to fourteen; these works were then lost for over a century, but are now played with regularity), growing with confidence until he wrote his first symphony for full orchestra (and first acknowledged), his opus 11 in C minor the year after; and at seventeen he wrote an overture to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, which is probably the earliest well known work by him (he later wrote more incidental music for the play). In 1827 he saw the first production of one of his operas, Die Hochzeit des Camacho, having written several others before then.

Mendelssohn, Felix (Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn) u ls u u key , German composer; grandson of the Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn . Mendelssohn was one of the major figures in 19th-century music. His father, Abraham, upon conversion to Christianity, changed his surname to Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, a seldom-used form. Mendelssohn (-Bartholdy), (Jakob Ludwig) Felix Born: Hamburg, 3 Feb 1809
Died: Leipzig, 4 Nov 1847
Nationality: German composer
A period of travel and concert-giving introduced Mendelssohn to England, Scotland (1829) and Italy (1830-31); after return visits to Paris (1831) and London (1832, 1833) he took up a conducting post at Düsseldorf (1833-5), concentrating on Handel's oratorios. Among the chief products of this time were "The Hebrides" (first performed in London,1832), the G minor Piano Concerto, "Die erste Walpurgisnacht," the Italian Symphony (1833, London) and "St. Paul" (1836, Düsseldorf). But as a conductor and music organizer his most significant achievement was in Leipzig (1835-47), where to great acclaim he conducted the Gewandhaus Orchestra, championing both historical and modern works (Bach, Beethoven, Weber, Schumann, Berlioz), and founded and directed the Leipzig Conservatory (1843). Composing mostly in the summer holidays, he produced "Ruy Blas" overture, a revised version of the "Hymn of Praise," the Scottish Symphony, the now famous Violin Concerto op.64 and the fine Piano Trio in C minor (1845). Meanwhile, he was intermittently (and less happily) employed by the king as a composer and choirmaster in Berlin, where he wrote highly successful incidental music, notably for "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1843). Much sought after as a festival organizer, he was associated especially with the Lower Rhine and Birmingham music festivals; he paid ten visits to England, the last two (1846-7) to conduct "Elijah" in Birmingham and London. Always a warm friend and valued colleague, he was devoted to his family; his death at the age of 38, after a series of strokes, was mourned internationally.

    Composer's Biography: Felix Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn was a German born musical genius, loved by the English. Includes information about his life and work.
Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn was born into a remarkably gifted and intellectual German family. But did you know that his family was Jewish, although they adopted Christian doctrine and the children were baptized in a Lutheran church? Did you know that his grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn, was one of the foremost scholars of his day? These are the lesser-known facts about the well known musician. Indeed, Felix Mendelssohn enjoyed the legacy of an extremely talented family. His grandfather, philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, presented studies in Greek, Latin, German, French, and English. His son, Felix's father, Abraham Mendelssohn, was a successful businessman in Hamburg and a patron of the arts. Abraham, like his father Moses before him, was an intellect and taught his son French and mathematics. Felix's mother, Lea Salomon Mendelssohn, a cultured and artistic woman, saw to it that her children were baptized in the Lutheran Church, a more readily accepted denomination in Germany during those times. She also encouraged her son's interest in music and taught him piano lessons. These music lessons began at an early age and Felix spent many hours practicing with his sister, Fanny. The French occupied Hamburg in 1811 and the Mendelssohns made a move to Berlin. There, Felix studied piano with Ludwig Berger and composition with K.F. Zelter. Along with Fanny and the other children in the family, Felix benefited from literature tutoring and landscape painting lessons, acquiring skills in these areas that he later applied as an adult.

      The Romantic Era
After Beethoven , composers turned their attention to the expression of intense feelings in their music. This expression of emotion was the focus of all the arts of the self-described "Romantic" movement. Whether in the nature imagery or passionate violence found in the paintings of Friederich, Delacroix, and Goya, the strange and fanciful literature of Edgar Allan Poe, or the adventure and myths of the great collections of fairy tales and folk poetry, the depiction in art of the beautiful, the strange, the sublime, and the morbid was the ruling credo of the period.
In music, the nineteenth century saw the creation and evolution of new genres such as the

Ah, sorry for the lack of posts, I have been quite busy lately.
    Ok, that was very interesting.
Felix Mendelssohn (no, not him ) had one of Britain's most popular bands in the 30s and 40s.
In the late 30's he became enamored with Hawaiian music and transformed the band into a Hawaiian style group complete with Hawaiian costumes and dancers and played music in Hawaiian style - often using genuine Hawaiian performers alongside British musicians.
They were heard regularly on the radio, seen on early TV work, and made a long and fascinating series of records between 1939 and 1951.
Felix Mendelssohn died, aged only 40, of Hodgkins’ Disease in Charing Cross Hospital on 4th February 1952.

Jakob Ludwig felix mendelssohn Bartholdy, now known generally as felix mendelssohn was a German composer of the early Romantic period.
    http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Lib/Mendelssohn-Felix.htm
    Introduction Cantatas Other Vocal Non-Vocal ... Z Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (Composer) Born: February 3, 1809 - Hamburg , Germany
Died: November 4, 1847 - Leipzig , Germany Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, now known generally as Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer of the early Romantic period. His work includes symphonies, concertos, oratories, piano and chamber music. After a long period of relative denigration, his creative originality is now beiong recognised and re-evaluated. Biography Mendelssohn was the son of a banker, Abraham, who was himself the son of the famous Jewish philosopher, Moses Mendelssohn, and of Lea Salomon, a member od the Itzig family. Abraham sought to renounce the Jewish religion; his children were first brought up without religious education, and were baptised as Lutherans in 1816. (Abraham and his wife were not themselves baptised until 1822). The name Bartholdy was assumed at the suggestion of Lea's brother, Jakob, who had purchased a property of this name and adopted it as his own surname. Abraham was later to explain this decision in a letter to Felix as a means of showing a decisive break with the traditions of his father Moses: 'There can no more be a Christian Mendelssohn than there can be a Jewish Confucius'. Although Felix continued to sign his letters as 'Mendelssohn Bartholdy' in obedience to his fsther's injunctions, he seems not to have objected to the use of 'Mendelssohn' alone.
The family moved to Berlin in 1812. His sister Fanny Mendelssohn (later Fanny Hensel), became a well-known pianist and amateur composer; originally Abraham had thought that she, rather than her brother, might be the more musical.

Felix Mendelssohn, grandson of the distinguished Jewish thinker Moses Mendelssohn, the additional surname Bartholdy adopted on his conversion to Christianity, was born in Hamburg, the son of a banker. The family moved to Berlin, where Mendelssohn was brought up, able to associate with a cultured circle of family friends. He was associated with the revival of public interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and in the early 1830s travelled abroad for his education, spending time in Italy and also visiting England, Wales and Scotland. He was later conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, where he also established a Conservatory, his stay there interrupted briefly by a return to Berlin. He died in Leipzig in 1847. Prolific and precocious, Mendelssohn had many gifts, musically as composer, conductor and pianist. His style of composition combined something of the economy of means of the classical period with the romanticism of a later age. Orchestral Music Mendelssohn wrote five symphonies, in addition to an attractive series of twelve early symphonies for strings, completed at the age of fourteen. Of the mature symphonies the Italian Symphony, Symphony No.4, completed in 1833 and reflecting the composer's experiences in Italy during his Grand Tour, is the most popular, closely followed by Symphony No. 3, the Scottish, with its echoes of the Palace of Holyrood in the days of Mary Queen of Scots. Symphony No. 5, the Reformation, written in 1832 to celebrate the third centenary of the Augsburg Confession, is less often heard, as is Symphony No. 2, the choral Lobgesang, written to mark the fourth centenary of the invention of printing in 1840.
