Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847) Like many other famous composers, Felix Mendelssohn began his musical life as a child prodigy. He and his sister Fanny learned many languages and artistics pursuits from their mother. Felix, born in Hamburg, performed at the piano and composed music from a very early age. The social life of his parents brought him widespread recognition, and provided much experience. His grandfather was a Jewish philosopher, but his father (a banker) left the Jewish faith for Christianity and adopted the family name of Bartholdy which is why Felix's surname is sometimes quoted as Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. As a young boy, Felix met and befriended the elder Goethe who was to prove an enduring influence on the musician. Mendelssohn toured Europe visiting a number of countries where he sketched musical fragments later to be turned into concert works, which is why a number of his works bear titles suggesting these countries. He visited Scotland, writing the seeds for his Scottish Symphony and the Fingal's Cave overture (following a trip to visit the Isle of Staffa, near Mull) and meeting Sir Walter Scott. He sketched his Italian Symphony while visiting Rome and Naples, and note that three of his "Songs Without Words" are Venetian Boat Songs. He was famous particularly in his native Germany and in England, a country he visited several times becoming a favourite of Queen Victoria. He first performed his oratorio Elijah in 1846 at the Birmingham Festival. In his mature years he was to hold a number of posts in Dusseldorf, Berlin and Leipzig where he worked closely with

23. FACILITY & MASTERY: FELIX MENDELSSOHN By Jeffrey Dane
Jeffrey Dane examines his life, conversion from Judaism to Christianity, works, and historical context.
http://people.cs.uchicago.edu/~ravikant/hw4/mendelssohn.html
by Jeffrey Dane If Felix Mendelssohn's position in the history of music is not as astral as that of other composers, he's still a central figure of his era and occupies an important place in the palace of his predecessors and peers. His grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn, was arguably the most significant 18th-century Jewish philosopher. Like Brahms later on, he virtually invented himself and drew out of his own humble beginnings. Familiar with Latin and the teachings of Maimonides, his importance was of such magnitude that he influenced not only the course of Hebraic thinking but also an entire generation of philosophers, including his contemporary, Immanuel Kant. His translation of the Old Testament, begun in 1780, was written in German and printed with Hebrew characters. He sought a way for his people to simultaneously integrate with their society while maintaining their cultural religious standards. Esteemed by Frederick the Great of Prussia with the (questionable) distinction of being a "privileged Jew," Moses Mendelssohn was lightened of the burdens placed on most others. His collected writings, published in 1843-45, filled seven volumes. The composer himself entered the world in Hamburg in 1809 as Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. He later underwent a formal conversion to Christianity, a decision more of convention than of conviction. He never denied his Hebraic origins; indeed, such connotations are evident in the titles of some of his works. A real idealist but also an ideal realist, his aspirations matched his practicality. He felt he could more fully contribute to his field by being able to function in it, a concept that will displease some people and leave others indifferent. Many feel we shouldn't be faulted for conducting business on the Sabbath if our livelihood depends on it.

In consequence of the troubles caused by the French occupation of Hamburg, Abraham Mendelssohn, his father, migrated in 1811 to Berlin, where his grandmother Fromet, then in the twenty-fifth year of her widowhood, received the whole family into her house, No. 7 Neue Promenade. Here Felix and his sister Fanny received their first instruction in music from their mother, under whose care they progressed so rapidly that their exceptional talent soon became apparent. Their next teacher was Madame Bigot, who, during the temporary residence of the family in Paris in 1816, gave them valuable instruction. On their return to Berlin they took lessons in thoroughbass and composition from Zelter, in pianoforte-playing from Ludwig Berger, and in violin-playing from Henning the care of their general education being entrusted to the father of the novelist Paul von Heyse Felix first played in public on the 24th of October 1818, taking the pianoforte part in a trio by Woelfi. On the 11th of April 1819 he entered the Berlin Singakademie as an alto, and in the following year began to compose with extraordinary rapidity. His earliest dated work is a cantata, In

... Home Page Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Life Felix Mendelssohn was born into a wealthy cultured family. When Mendelssohn was 2 years old, the family moved to Berlin where they became widely known for their artistic and musical activities. Mendelssohn was a child prodigy and made his first public appearance as a pianist when he was only nine. He was associated with the revival of public interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach In the early 1830s he began a three year grand tour through Europe. He visited England where he was warmly received and conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also journeyed through Scotland where he conceived the idea for the Hebrides Overture. He was later conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, where he also helped to found the Leipzig Conservatoire. He continued his frequent visits to Great Britain and in 1847 he visited the country for the tenth time. His style of composition combined something of the economy of means of the classical period with the Romanticism of a later age. He wrote his finest music before he was eighteen and among his later works only his chamber music fulfills his early promise.

      About
Mendelssohn, a musical prodigy, came to prominence in his native Germany before he officially began to study music. He became one of the nineteenth century's biggest composers with his "Violin Concierto" and "A Midsummer's Night Dream" (which contains the evergreen "Wedding March"). A master of symphonic structure, Mendelssohn became a major public figure in Great Britain and spent considerable energy reacquainting the public with Bach's work.

Life, works and influence of Felix Mendelssohn, 19th century composer who founded the Leipzig Conservatory of Music and revived the works of Bach and Handel.
Felix Mendelssohn, German composer, pianist and conductor, was famous for oratorio Elijah and short piece "On Wings of Song." Aside from reviving the music of JS Bach and Handel's oratorios, and founding the Leipzig Conservatory of Music, he promoted careers of other composers, including Berlioz, Robert and Clara Schumann, and Anton Rubinstein. Mendelssohn was an important figure of the early 19th century Romantic Era. Felix and his beloved sister Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel (also a composer and talented pianist) had wealth, status, good education and a supportive family. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he based most of his works on personal experiences rather than from inspired literature or drawn out imagination.
