Background

Felix Mendelssohn (Mendelssohn-Bartholdy) was born in Hamburg in 1809. His father was a wealthy Jewish banker, who converted to Christianity and added Bartholdy to his surname. Felix was raised in Berlin, and began learning piano at an early age. He showed an astonishing musical precocity, giving his first piano recital at age nine, and beginning his compositional career at ten. By the time he was introduced to the 72-year-old poet Goethe at age twelve, he had composed several string symphonies, piano pieces, and songs, as well as two operettas.
The young prodigy
In 1825, he composed one of his greatest chamber works, the Octet in E flat for four violins, two violas, and two cellos. He composed the overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1826, and in the same year entered Berlin University.
Mendelssohn had a great interest in the music of J.S. Bach, and in March 1829 he conducted a performance of Bach 's St Matthew Passion, which had been unperformed since Bach's death. The performance started a Bach revival that spread across Europe. Later that year, he embarked on a tour of Britain, where his compositions and performances were met with tremendous enthusiasm. Before leaving Britain, he made a tour of Scotland, whose countryside inspired several works, including the Hebrides Overture (1830) and the Third Symphony, the 'Scottish' (1830-42). The star conductor
During the next few years, he travelled extensively throughout Europe. A visit to Italy inspired him to write his Fourth Symphony, the 'Italian' (completed 1833). He was appointed conductor of the Lower Rhine Festival in 1833, and in 1835 became conductor of the famous Leipzing Gewandhaus Orchestra. He married in 1837, became director of the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1841, and in 1843 established the Leipzig Conservatory. He composed many masterpieces during this period, including the

German composer and conductor. Mendelssohn was an important figure in the revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in the nineteenth century.

The Mendelssohn household was one of the cultural centers of Berlin. The family was wealthy thanks to its banking interests, and its garden home served as a concert hall in which Felix and his sister Fanny often performed and had their works played. It was on just such an occasion that the public heard a marvelous work by the seventeen-year-old Felix: his Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream
Felix Mendelssohn was something of a prodigy. He wrote his first piece at the age of eleven, beginning a prolific period in which the youth created pieces in virtually every genre from sonatas to concertos and even a Singspiel. At the age of twenty, he conducted a performance of Bach 's St. Matthew Passion at the Berlin Singakademie. This was the first modern performance of the work and was an important event in the nineteenth century rediscovery of Bach.
At about the same time, Felix began to travel widely; the next few years took him to England, Scotland and Italy. Besides spreading his reputation, these journeys were important for the pieces that they yielded. Some, such as his "Italian" symphony and the

In my last music post , I wrote about Bad Religion . Today I'd like to shift gears just a little bit and discuss Felix Mendelssohn . One criterion that I use to judge a composer is what percentage of his music I enjoy listening to – sort of the "consistently good" criterion. And by that rubric, Mendelssohn is probably my favorite composer. I find that I like almost everything that he composed. Although I grew up listening to classical music, I don't always know the names and composers of the pieces I like. So I was pleased recently to "re-discover" Mendelssohn. My interest started with his violin concerto in E minor. This piece of music has one of the most beautiful openings I've heard. Listen to the 1st movement: Allegro molto appassionato , courtesy of Wikipedia. Mendelssohn's fourth symphony (the "Italian") is also outstanding. You can listen to the beginnings of each movement , courtesy of amazon.com (if you only have time for one, I suggest the fourth movement). Although I don't think they're played as much, I also enjoy his two piano concertos. Listen to the

F elix Mendelssohn is regarded by classical music aficionados and critics alike, as one of the most prolific and gifted composers the world has ever known. Even those who could not name any of his works have heard it, as his "Wedding March" from "A Midsummer Night's Dream", which has accompanied many a bride down the aisle. Whether he was born with his incredible talent or was the product of an artistically and intellectually-inclined family will remain a mystery, but like all prodigies, Mendelssohn showed signs of true genius from childhood. Regarded by some critics as the 19th century equivalent of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and others as a great composer who's contribution would have been greater, had his life been marred with more hardships, everyone should agree that he deserves his place amongst the best, and most influential.

Introduction (born Hamburg, 3 February 1809; died Leipzig, 4 November 1847). Of a distinguished intellectual, artistic and banking family in Berlin, he grew up in a privileged environment (the family converted from Judaism to Christianity in 1816, taking the additional 'Bartholdy'). He studied the piano with Ludwig Berger and theory and composition with Zelter, producing his first piece in 1820; thereafter, a profusion of sonatas, concertos, string symphonies, piano quartets and Singspiels revealed his increasing mastery of counterpoint and form. Besides family travels and eminent visitors to his parents' salon (Humboldt, Hegel, Klingemann, A.B. Marx, Devrient), early influences included the poetry of Goethe (whom he knew from 1821) and the Schlegel translations of Shakespeare; these are traceable in his best music of the period, including the exuberant String Octet op.20 and the vivid, poetic overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream op.21. His gifts as a conductor also showed themselves early in 1829 he directed a pioneering performance of Bach's

    MENDELSSOHN, FELIX BIOGRAPHY
Felix Mendelssohn, grandson of the distinguished Jewish thinker Moses Mendelssohn, the additional surname Bartholdy adopted on his conversion to Christianity, was born in Hamburg, the son of a banker. The family moved to Berlin, where Mendelssohn was brought up, able to associate with a cultured circle of family friends. He was associated with the revival of public interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and in the early 1830s travelled abroad for his education, spending time in Italy and also visiting England, Wales and Scotland. He was later conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, where he also established a Conservatory, his stay there interrupted briefly by a return to Berlin. He died in Leipzig in 1847. Prolific and precocious, Mendelssohn had many gifts, musically as composer, conductor and pianist. His style of composition combined something of the economy of means of the classical period with the romanticism of a later age. Orchestral Music Mendelssohn wrote five symphonies, in addition to an attractive series of twelve early symphonies for strings, completed at the age of fourteen. Of the mature symphonies the Italian Symphony, Symphony No.4, completed in 1833 and reflecting the composer's experiences in Italy during his Grand Tour, is the most popular, closely followed by Symphony No. 3, the Scottish, with its echoes of the Palace of Holyrood in the days of Mary Queen of Scots. Symphony No. 5, the Reformation, written in 1832 to celebrate the third centenary of the Augsburg Confession, is less often heard, as is Symphony No. 2, the choral Lobgesang, written to mark the fourth centenary of the invention of printing in 1840.

Mendelssohn was one of the best loved composers of the 19th century, particularly in Victorian England, and he was certainly the most successful. His career showed none of the reverses, disappointments and delays that were the rule for the other great Romantic composers; indeed, it was the overwork and exhaustion to meet the demands for his performances and compositions that led to his early death at the age of 38. Born February 3, 1809 in Hamburg, Germany, Felix Mendelssohn began, like Mozart, as a child prodigy. His father, Abraham, was a successful banker; his influential mother, Leah Solomon, was an amateur musician. Young Felix studied both the violin and piano and gave his first public recital at age nine. Encouraged by his family and teachers, the precocious Felix began writing music when he was 10 years old. At the age of 17, he astonished the world with a true masterpiece, his Overture to William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

    by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
From his childhood reputation as gifted musical prodigy, Felix Mendelssohn matured to become a masterful composer who, despite his relatively short life, ranks among the great composers of the first half of the Nineteenth Century. Mendelssohn was truly fortunate to have been born in Hamburg, on February 3, 1809, as the son of Lea Salomon and Abraham Mendelssohn, a wealthy banker. He was the grandson of Rabbi and philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, one of the most prominent Jewish thinkers of the late Eighteenth Century. Having been born into a family of art-loving intellectuals, Mendelssohn's parents provided the ideal cultural environment for nurturing the artistic talent of such a precocious child. In addition to receiving an excellent education, Mendelssohn and his family traveled extensively around Europe, which proved to be a considerable influence on Felix.
In a move that would have greatly shocked his father, Moses Mendelssohn, Abraham and Lea baptized their four children, Fanny, Rebekah, Felix, and Paul, in the Lutheran Church, and the entire family converted to the Lutheran faith in 1816 when they moved from French occupied Hamburg to Berlin. Although his parents added the surname Bartholdy upon their conversion, Felix resisted the name change and obstinately kept the last name of Mendelssohn.
Moving to Berlin was quite beneficial for Felix, who had received all of his previous musical instruction from his mother. In Berlin, he studied piano under Ludwig Berger and composition with Karl Zelter, the director of the Berlin Singakademie. The Mendelssohn family's circle of friends was also a positive influence on the children, since most were intellectuals who were involved in the arts. From a young age, Felix Mendelssohn demonstrated a high degree of musical talent, playing both the piano and the violin exceptionally well.

This page hosted by Get your own Free Home Page Felix Mendelssohn was one of the interesting anomalies of classical music; a stunningly talented composer who never went through the agonizing financial struggles and work-related travails that beset so many of his contemporaries and predecessors. He was born into a wealthy Hamburg family, studied the piano with his mother at an early age, and later took formal instruction on the piano from Carl Zelter in Berlin. When still only a child, he began to compose chamber works - his family often held chamber soirées in their home, and young Felix had ample opportunity to hone his craft on these impromptu ensembles. Soon he was composing trios, quartets and operettas, and was making his mark as a pianist; his public debut on the keyboard came at the age of nine. By the time Mendelssohn was seventeen, his fame as a musical prodigy was spreading; that year, his first great composition - the overture to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream - was produced.

M endelssohn was almost certainly the most successful musician of the 19th century. His career showed none of the reverses, disappointments and delays that were the rule for the other great Romantic composers; indeed, it was precisely the overwork and exhaustion to meet the demands for his presence, his performances and his compositions that led to his untimely death at the age of 38. T he most intensely busy time of his life was ushered in by his appointment in 1835 as the administrator, music director and conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus concerts. In very short order, he raised the quality of musical life in Leipzig to equal that of any city in Europe, and in 1842 he founded the local Conservatory to maintain his standards of excellence. (The school was to be the most highly regarded institution of its kind in the world for the next half century.) In 1841, he was named director of the Music Section of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, a cultural venture newly instituted by King Frederick of Prussia, which required him not only to supervise and conduct a wide variety of programs but also to compose upon royal demand the incidental music which complements his dazzling 1826 Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream
