Fanny Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg , the first child out of four children. Her parents were Abraham Mendelssohn , (who was the son of Moses Mendelssohn and later changed the family surname to Mendelssohn Bartholdy), and his wife Lea, n©e Salomon, a granddaughter of the entrepreneur Daniel Itzig Fanny benefited from the same musical education and upbringing as her brother Felix, sharing a number of his music tutors, including Zelter . Like Felix (who was born in 1809), Fanny showed prodigious musical ability as a child and began to write music. Visitors to the Mendelssohn household in the early 1820s, including Ignaz Moscheles and Sir George Smart , were equally impressed by both siblings.

Felix Mendelssohn died later that same year after a series of strokes, on November 4, 1847, in Leipzig. It is a vivid portrait of an exceptional artist, who could have held her own among the greatest of her generation had she not been prohibited from venturing into the professional world. It illustrates what a remarkable pianist she was, the importance in the Berlin musical scene of their house concerts, and the encourangement she recieved from her husband Wilhelm Hensel. It is altogether a fascinating story. Source: ambache.co.uk

"The Education of women should always be relative to men. To please, to be useful to us, to make us love and esteem them, to educate us when young and to take care of us when grown up, to advise, to console us, to render our lives easy and agreeablethese are the duties of women at all time and what they should be taught in their infancy." Johann Campe [2] In examining our own culture, and in cross-cultural comparisons of gender identity, we have seen now, up until around ten years ago, male bias has "informed" the literature of most disciplines; other than certain super-anomalous exceptions, women have been isolated in their nuclear families, and relegated to the "hot stove" and domestic sphere because of their reproductive functions. Men have been the masters of culture and a male world-view has prevailed. Women are seen as outside, and a threat to, the system that men represent. Power is in male hands and women have been trained to accept it. FANNY MENDELSSOHN HENSEL Born: November 14, 1805, Hamburg
Died: May 14, 1847, Berlin
In her own words...
"I'm beginning to publish...and if I've done it of my own free will and cannot blame anyone in my family if aggravation results from it...then I can console myself with the knowledge that in no way did I seek or induce the kind of musical reputation that might have brought me such offers. I hope I shall not disgrace you all, for I am no femme libre...If it [my publication] succeeds, that is, if people like the pieces and I receive further offers, I know it will be a great stimulus to me, which I have always needed in order to create. If not, I shall be at the same point where I have always been."
German pianist, composer of Lieder and chamber music. Sister of Felix Mendelssohn.
Our picture of Fanny Mendelssohn as a composer is based primarily on her songs. Even here, however, our knowledge is limited by the fact that most of the music is unpublished, while some is in family archives, unavailable to scholars. Yet that which is available shows a composer of sure accomplishment and great melodic gifts. Her songs, especially, are comparable to the best of the genre. The melodies are engaging and the accompaniments are well-crafted and play an integral role in setting the poetic texts. These qualities carry over into her "songs without words"—piano pieces in the style of the Lied. This was a favorite genre for her brother, who is often credited with its invention, though the honor might just as likely go to Fanny. Her music is often difficult to find, but certainly worth the effort.

Introduction

Fanny Hensel grew up in a well-situated and highly cultured Berlin family. She and her younger brothers and sister Felix, Rebecca and Paul all received excellent education. The banker Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy and his wife Lea were quick to recognise Fanny's exceptional musical talent and, just like her brother Felix, she received instruction from the best music teachers available. In 1816, during a period of several months spent in Paris, the children studied piano with Marie Bigot de Morogues, who was a particular favourite of Haydn's and Beethoven's.

Education and first compositions
After returning to Berlin they took lessons with the well-known Beethoven interpreter Ludwig Berger. Abraham Mendelssohn hired the conscientious Carl Friedrich Zelter, a friend of Goethe's and the director of the BERLINER SINGAKADEMIE, to teach his children music theory and composition. Fanny soon became known to the Mendelssohn's circle of friends and acquaintances not just as an excellent pianist but also as the composer of lieder and piano pieces. In an obituary written just after Fanny's sudden death, the Berlin music critic Ludwig Rellstab wrote that she had shared "a partnership of talent" with her famous brother and "had achieved a level of musical knowledge which few other artists who have dedicated their lives to music could claim".

FANNY MENDELSSOHN (1805-1847)
Lieder
Excerpts from the sleeve notes Madame Hensel was a musician beyond comparison, a remarkable pianist, and a woman of superior mind; small and thin in person but with an energy that showed itself in her deep eyes and in her fiery glance. She was gifted with rare ability as a composer. M. and Madame Hensel came to the Academy on Sunday evenings. She used to place herself at the piano with the good grace and simplicity of those who make music because they love it, and thanks to her fine talent and prodigious memory I was brought to the knowledge of a mass of the chefs-d'oeuvres of German music of which I was completely ignorant at that time, among others a number of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach - sonatas, concertos, fugues, and preludes, and several Mendelssohn compositions which were a revelation to me from an unknown world. from Charles Gounod's memoirs Fanny Cäcilie Hensel, née Mendelssohn Bartholdy* (1805-1847), has been long and unjustly overlooked as a serious composer, despite a considerable and impressive output comprising numerous piano pieces, innumerable songs, duets, trios, a cappella choral works, chamber music for different instruments, an overture, an oratorio and several major cantatas. The bond between Fanny and Felix was a profoundly close one from an early age. Felix looked up to Fanny, who was almost four years his senior, and learned a great deal from her in early childhood. They became close confidantes sharing, exchanging and criticising one another's musical ideas. Felix was always interested in Fanny's opinions of his own work, but in later years she became so dependent on his approval in all matters musical that this special bond was both a joy and a burden.

Fanny Mendelssohn
FANNY MENDELSSOHN. WOMEN occupy themselves so much with music, that it is surprising so few of them compose it. In some branches of the fine arts women have won the first rank; in others, high rank; but the sex has not yet furnished one composer of music who can be named with the great masters, nor with any masters. The career of Fanny Mendelssohn may throw some light upon the reason why this is so. She had the requisite genius; she was nurtured in the atmosphere of music; she was trained in her art to a certain point; she gave more than promise of original power. But she was a woman, and the traditions of all the past ages, speaking to her with the voice of her father, said: Thus far, and no farther! Living when she did, and where she did, her cheerful obedience was wise. She was the child of a gifted and noble race. Her grandfather, Moses Mendelssohn Bartholdy, once said: "Formerly, I was the son of my father; now, I am the father of my son."

of music by women Fanny Mendelssohn
Fanny was Felix's elder sister by four years, and like him was a child prodigy. Throughout their lives they had an extremely close personal and musical relationship, Felix often depending on Fanny for advice about his works. Despite being discouraged by both him and her father from publishing her works, she wrote over 400 pieces, in the main piano works and lieder. Her music was heard at the Sunday morning 'Musicales' at their house in Berlin, which were attended by eminent musicians. Goethe was not alone in considering her to be just as gifted as her genius brother. While people often compare her music with that of Felix, her expression is of an altogether more passionate nature. Her music is only now coming to light and being published.

    Description
Although best known as the sister of Felix Mendelssohn, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel was a virtuoso pianist and a composer of considerable merit in her own right. A child prodigy like her brother, Hensel performed chiefly at private functions and her oeuvre of more than four hundred compositions remained largely unknown for more than a century after her untimely death. Hensel's accomplishments include songs, chamber works and choral pieces but her enduring reputation as a composer rests with her piano music. This volume is a publication of her important early works.
