The text and music were inspired by the northern islands of Orkney. What does Sir Peter Maxwell Davies have in common with Thomas Tallis? Though separated by centuries and style of composition, both English composers wrote music for the Queen. Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis served under Elizabeth I while contemporary composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies serves Elizabeth II. In today's world of the easily affordable album, musicians no longer have to depend on a few wealthy patrons in order to scrape by a living (unless, of course, the musician is a classical composer, in which case he or she may do well to find a sponsor or 2). Yet along with its monarchy, England persists in preserving the long-standing tradition of court-sponsored music. Appointed the Queen's Master of Music in March 2004, Davies is required to write a Royal carol every year. And his latest work honors one of the Queen's favorites places: Scotland. Vesalii Icones Peter Maxwell Davies Biography Maxwell Davies was born in Salford. He took piano lessons and composed from an early age. After education at Leigh Grammar School, he studied at the University of Manchester and at the Royal Manchester College of Music (amalgamated into the Royal Northern College of Music in 1973), where his fellow students included Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr, Elgar Howarth and John Ogdon. Together they formed New Music Manchester, a group committed to contemporary music. After graduating in 1956, he briefly studied with Goffredo Petrassi in Rome before working as Director of Music at Cirencester Grammar School from 1959 to 1962. After a further period of study on a Harkness Fellowship at Princeton University with Roger Sessions, Milton Babbitt and Earl Kim, Davies moved to Australia, where he was Composer in Residence at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide from 1965-66. He then returned to the United Kingdom, and moved to Sanday, one of the Orkney Islands, in 1971. Orkney (particularly its capital, Kirkwall) hosts the St. Magnus Festival, an arts festival founded by Davies in 1977. He frequently uses it to premier new works (often played by the local school orchestra).

Mode is especially proud to add two previously unrecorded works to Davies' catalog. The String Quartet from 1952 is Davies' earliest published composition written when he was 18; a work which remained unplayed for many years until the Arditti Quartet took it up and performed it for the composer on a special occasion. Yet this is no typical "student" workit is a whirlwind movement which already looks forward to the style of the composer to come, with dancing cross-rhythms and hints of Bartok, jazz and Indian music (which Davies later wrote a dissertation on). Le Jongleur de Notre Dame of 1978 is from an important period of Davies' work. Written and scored for his special ensemble of that time, The Fires of London, it is a virtuoso theater-piece. The libretto, here by the composer, is based on the French tale by Anatole France about a juggler who performs his act before the Virgin Mary and gains her blessing. In Le Jongleur, the juggler is a mime with musical counterparts. The narrative is carried by The Abbot (a baritone), and other brothers represented by the flute, clarinet and percussion. This cheerfully unpretentious work opens and closes with an Overture and Recessional performed by a children's band, who march in (and out), to great sonic effect, of the church where the recording took place.
