22 May 2007
Peter Maxwell Davies photo by John Batten Michael Arnold, a longtime friend of composer Peter Maxwell Davies and the husband of Davies's manager, has been arrested in connection with the possible embezzlement of £500,000 from the composer's bank accounts. The 73-year-old Arnold was arrested and questioned in London last week about money missing from Davies's business account. He was released on bail in advance of a hearing on May 30, according to The Times of London. Judy Arnold, Michael's wife, has been Davies's manager for 32 years, according to The Times , and the composer is reportedly good friends with both Arnolds and has dedicated compositions to them. Davies became suspicious when a large sum went missing from the proceeds of MaxOpus, the company he founded in 1999, which operates one of the oldest classical music download websites. The Arnolds were made directors of MaxOpus in 2000, according to The Daily Mail . A police investigation resulted in Michael Arnold's arrest on April 18. Davies, 72, has been a prolific composer since the 1960s and in 2004 was made Master of the Queen's Music, a honorary position dating back to the 17th century. There are no fixed requirements for those honored with the role, but the holder is sometimes requested to write pieces for royal or state occasions.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies A conversation with Bruce Duffie
From a piano piece which was played in the BBC Home Service's Children's Hour in 1942 to the cycle of 10 string quartets he is currently producing, composer and conductor Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has revealed a multitude of ideas in a wide range of works for symphonic and vocal ensembles, as well as theatrical presentations large and small. Max (as he is known) was born in Manchester in 1934. He studied there, and then in Rome with Goffredo Petrassi. After being Director of Music at Cirencester Grammar School for three years, he went to Princeton for studies with Roger Sessions. Along with his composing, he shared his musical visions of others by conducting the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic and others in Europe and the United States. In 2004, he was named Master of the Queen's Music Earlier in his varied and distinguished career, he, along with Harrison Birtwistle formed a small performing group called The Pierrot Players which was later reorganized and renamed The Fires of London . It was with that group that he toured several cities in the US and Canada in the fall of 1985. The conversation which follows was done while the group was in St. Louis during that tour.
Bruce Duffie : You seem to be very interested in relationships - composer/performer/audience. Would you tell me a bit about your thoughts concerning this?

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time.
He lives in the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland where he writes most of his music. In a worklist that spans many decades, he has written across the widest gamut of musical genre, and in many styles. The power to communicate forcefully and directly with his audiences always manifests itself, whether it be in his profoundly argued symphonic works, the delightful music-theatre works written to be performed by non-specialist children or his sometimes outrageous witty light orchestral works. Born in Salford, Maxwell Davies studied in Manchester in the 1950's and later in Rome with Petrassi and in the US at Princeton University. His first appointment as head of music at Cirencester Grammar School in 1959 sparked a life-long commitment to writing for children and young musicians. In the 1960's Maxwell Davies wrote some of his most controversial and iconic works, such as Eight Songs for a Mad King , and in 1967 he founded the new music ensemble The Pierrot Players with Harrison Birtwistle, soon after becoming Artistic Director of the Fires of London ensemble, for whom he wrote many works. In the 1970's Maxwell Davies moved to the Orkney Islands where he composed his first symphony in 1976, and in 1977 founded the St Magnus Festival, Orkney's annual arts festival which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Through the 80's and 90's he was prolific both as composer and conductor, composing most of his symphonies and the ten Strathclyde Concertos for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Maxwell Davies was appointed Master of the Queen's Music in 2004 and in this role he has sought to raise the profile of music in Great Britain, as well as writing many works for Her Majesty The Queen and for royal occasions.

James Wierzbicki / writings Peter Maxwell Davies interview re: "Eight Songs for a Mad King" THE BRITISH COMPOSER Peter Maxwell Davies says he never set out to shock listeners when he created, in 1969, a cycle of songs based in part on texts attributed to England's King George III. Yet the audience that attended the premiere in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall inApril of that year was hardly prepared for the psychological impact ''Eight Songs for a Mad King'' would have on them. As will doubtless be discovered by persons who witness the Davies-supervised performance of the work Tuesday evening in Washington University's Edison Theatre, 16 years later the piece is still very capable of giving listeners a jolt. The music's excursions into ear-jarring dissonance came as no surprise to that first London audience. Deliberately harsh and ''ugly'' sounds were par for the course in British avant-garde music during the turbulent '60s, and by the end of the decade Davies had already demonstrated numerous times that he was willing to spice his generally tonal and tuneful work with clashes of the most garish sort. Nor were the work's appropriations of music of the past - most notably early-18th-century songs and 1920s-style swing - in any way unexpected. Trained in historical musicology as well as composition, Davies had worked with paraphrases of older music since his undergraduate days at the Royal College of Music in Manchester. Among his earliest published pieces are the 1957 ''Alma Redemptoris Mater'' for wind sextet, which is based on a sample from the Sarum plainchant, and the 1958 ''St. Michael Sonata'' for largewind ensemble, which incorporates into its texture fragments of the traditional Gregorian Requiem setting. His early references to medieval music were more subtle than obvious, but by 1964 Davies was unabashedly dealing with full-blown and only thinly-disguised musical quotations, using them as sonic dramatis personae whose ''personalities'' often changed drastically during the unfolding of a composition.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies CBE
(Born 1934)
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, (widely known simply as 'Max'), was born in Holly Street, Salford, son of Thomas and Hilda Davies, on 8th September 1934, and would become one of Great Britain's leading modern composers at the end of the 20th century. Later his family moved home to live in Swinton. Peter attended Leigh Grammar School, and despite the school's neglect of music in the curriculum, he won a scholarship to the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern School of Music) and was a graduate of Manchester University.
While at school, Peter had fallen fowl of his headmaster (nicknamed the "Pig") and he got his revenge by performing his first concert at the RMCM entitled
