This is a continuos one hour field recording with the expert cello playing of former Kronos Quartet member Joan Jeanreand.
Miya Masaoka is a classically trained composer, kotoist and sound artist who creates works for musicians, installations and choirs. Her works have been performed in Europe, Japan, Canada, Eastern Europe, India and the United States.
"This requires patient listening to appreciate, but those who take the time will marvel at how ingeniously Masaoka can challenge and change perceptions of what is, and isn't, music. By the album's conclusion, Jeanrenaud's piercing extended cello techniques are almost indistinguishable from the bird calls and jet roars they accompany. It's a potent reminder that what matters most in Masaoka's visionary work is the whole, not the individual components, and that intriguing music may be as close as the next hillside or canyon."

Miya Masaoka
http://www.miyamasaoka.com Miya Masaoka is a composer/kotoist performing acoustically and with the Laser Koto In her solo performances, she uses her background in Japanese court music, new music and improvisation to create a span from 9th-century Japan to sensor and digital technology. With an array of extended techniques that include strumming, bowing, scratching, and thumps, she uses fragments of koto-created sounds to weave an organic synthesis of the acoustic and electronic. Sometimes more acoustic, sometimes moreelectronic, she developes timbre - based motives, textures and loops.
Using various triggering devices in tandem with live samples, ultra sound, light sensors and digital signal processing, Masaoka captures gestures of movement and sound that cross the lines of world music, jazz, new music, and electronics. She has collaborated with some of the most noted artists of the twentieth century, including Ornette Coleman, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Pharoah Sanders, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille, Steve Coleman, George Lewis, Cecil Taylor and ROVA Saxophone Quartet. Her music compositions have led her to varied forms of media and performance. In "

Interactivity, improvisation, gestural communication and text are explored within the context of network culture, desire, expectation and alienation. Disembodied sound sources, unpredictable visual and rhythmic time delays, unintended synchronicity and other artifacts of streaming will be exploited. Miya Masaoka - musician, composer, sound-artist - has created works for Koto, laser interfaces, field recordings, laptop and video and written scores for ensembles, chamber orchestras and mixed choirs. In her pieces she has investigated the sound and movement of insects, as well as the physiological response of plants, the human brain and her own body. Within these varied contexts her performance work investigates the interactive, collaborative aspects of sound, improvisation, nature and society.

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~rneckmag/miya.html
Miya Masaoka: The Usual Turmoil - interview by Declan O'Driscoll The koto is a visual wonder. 21 strings over two pieces of wood (shaped like a coffin); bridge like a human spine. It has presence. When it is played by Miya Masaoka (born 1958) sound and movement combine as she reaches across its length, scrapes a string, strokes its underside with a ball or bows it. A choreography that is her thought process, each sound a careful decision, each action a thought. The possibilities, already vast, are extended further by the technology created for her at STEIM in Amsterdam. Just played notes return, percussive effects created on the hollow body of the koto are sampled to build a dark, rumbling layer. A committed political activist and resident of San Francisco, Masaoka began studying koto in her twenties, having already spent four years working in a Mack Trucks assembly plant where, apart from working on the line, she was a shop steward. After receiving a degree in music at Mills College (among her tutors were Willie Winant, Alvin Curran and David Tudor) she worked for two years as artistic director of a music workshop for homeless people. Through meetings with Henry Kaiser, Lisle Ellis and Larry Ochs she began to find her way into the San Francisco improvising community and eventually became recognised there, and beyond, as a player of great imaginative depth, with an explorer's urge to push towards new territory that would lead to her playing with, among others, Mark Dresser, Ikue Mori, Susie Ibarra, Cecil Taylor, George Lewis, Pharoah Sanders, John Zorn and Jon Rose.

She has performed and/or recorded with musicians as varied as Steve Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Henry Kaiser, Fred Frith, James Newton, Wadada Leo Smith, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille, Gino Robair, and trombonist/electronics experimenter George Lewis. Masaoka, in addition, has presented works that also include such diverse instrumentation and mixed media in conjunction with her koto playing as various electronics (including laptop experimentation), violin, bassoon, a live bee hive (yes, you read right), dancers, poetry, and naked Asian men (yes, you read right again!) Needless to say, I expected the unexpected when going to see her perform live during her too rare of a New York, from Northern California, visit over at the Tonic in early September. Her Trans Timbral Literation Trio, as she labels this collective and fairly new experiment, featured tabla player, Samir Chatterjee and trumpeter, Amir El Saffar. Masaokaƒ‚ƒ‚‚‚ƒ‚‚‚‚Â’s already established Eastern sense of space and time would certainly be showcased at the forefront of this trio, or presumably so. The music was written out and of a demanding nature with all six eyes, for the most part, glued to the sheet music. The formal structure and complexity of the music wound up an antithesis of Masaokaƒ‚ƒ‚‚‚ƒ‚‚‚‚Â’s personal strengths unfortunately, though there were more than a few memorable highlights from Masaoka's latest experimentation.

http://www.deafireland.com/index_miya.htm
MIYA MASAOKA Currently resident in San Francisco and an affiliate of the Bay Area Improv Scene, Japanese-born musician, composer and multi-disciplinary performance artist Miya Masaoka first began experimenting with interfacing the 17-string Japanese koto with midi controllers back in the 1980s. Since then she has developed an innovative approach to this traditional instrument. With the koto connected directly to her laptop, Masaoka records her playing live, processes the samples in real time, and then improvises over the processed sounds. Her performance pieces have investigated the sound and movement of insects, as well as the physiological responses of plants and of the human brain and body. Masaoka has used these pieces to explore issues of race, gender and the interconnectedness of different species. Aside from numerous collaborations and recordings as a virtuoso koto player, Masaoka has also found time to write several pieces for chamber orchestra alongside a full-length ballet, as well as teaching Japanese American Art and Aesthetics, music composition and jazz theory. She is a founding member of the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival and the official Koto player for Bang on a Can - the famous NY based contemporary music concert ensemble.
