Miya Masaoka
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Miya Masaoka (b. Washington, D.C. ) is an American musician and composer who performs on the 17-string Japanese koto zither, often augmenting it with string preparations and electronic triggers (as in her "Koto Monster", where additional laser beam "strings" hover over the koto). She is known for creative, improvisational technique, and a sensibility that combines experimental Western approaches with the tradition of the koto. Her compositions have included works for large ensembles, sometimes with unusual sound sources such as hives of bees, or the amplified sounds of human bodies (brain waves, heartbeat, etc). One notable piece was performed outdoors in a plaza on San Francisco 's sometimes unsavory Market Street, utilizing an ensemble of dozens of musicians, a pair of male and female exotic dancers, and taped interviews with sex workers: "What's the Difference Between Stripping and Playing the Violin?" An impressive blend of musical composition, and site-specific conceptual art. She has also done performance art utilizing insects ( Madagascar hissing cockroaches , bees) crawling across her body (references to the Yoko Ono film Fly Miya Masaoka is known as one of the more distinctive members of the Bay Area Improv Scene (sometimes also called the Creative/New Music scene) in the San Francisco area.

In her performance pieces she has investigated the sound and movement of insects, as well as the physiological responses of plants, the human brain, and her own body. Helen Thorington : Miya, you were trained in Japanese court music as well as contemporary music and I understand have expanded on the playing techniques of the koto – first by using extended techniques, but more importantly, by building a Laser Koto. For those who don’t know, can you tell us about the koto and how you developed it? What is the Laser Koto and how does it work? Miya Masaoka : Sometimes various events, thoughts and inspiration converge in particular ways, and evolve over a period of time, I would say this was the case for the Laser Koto. For many years I had been trying to develop ways of extending the koto electronically –and continue to do so— and along these lines I was an aritist in residence at STEIM in Amsterdam and worked with Matt Wright at CNMAT to develop ways of building an interface for real time processing and sampling using gestural controllers and other ways of capturing and modifying sound. We recorded and mapped 900 koto samples that could be accessed in various ways.

Miya Masaoka, musician, composer, performance artist, has created works for koto, laser interfaces, laptop and video and written scores for ensembles, chamber orchestras and mixed choirs. In her performance pieces she has investigated the sound and movement of insects, as well as the physiological responses of plants, the human brain, and her own body. Within these varied contexts of sound, music and nature, her performance work emphasizes the interactive, live nature of improvisation, and reflects an individual, contemporary expression of Japanese gagaku aural gesturalism. Masaoka's work has been presented in Japan, Canada, Europe, Eastern Europe and she has toured to India six times. Venues include V2 in Rotterdam, Cybertheater in Brussels, Elektronisch Festival in Groningen, the Cleveland Performance Art Festival, The Electronik Body Festival in Bratislava, Slovakia, Radio Bremen, Germany, Festival of Lights, Hyberadad, India, and the London Musicians Collective. Since forming and directing the San Francisco Gagaku Society, Masaoka has been creating new ways of thinking about and performing on the Japanese koto. She has developed a virtuosic and innovative approach, including improvisation and expanding the instrument into a virtual space using computer, lasers, live sampling, and real time processing.

By Heuwell Tircuit Concerts devoted to authentic performances of Asian music are not locally as common as in days of yore. So Friday's Japanese Music Summit II in Old First Church was doubly welcome, offering the rare opportunity to hear classic works, new and old, played on original instruments by experts. The program featured six Japanese works, one Korean, one quasi-Asian piece by Canadian Brett Larner plus an ensemble improvisation by Trio Narro, expanded to a quartet for the occasion. The curious aspect of the programming lay in the fact that although devoted to traditional instruments and classical styles, all the music offered except Ichijuro Koide's 17th Century Kurokami was of 20th Century origins. So one faced a curious paradox. It was at once an evening of the real thing, and at the same time nostalgia carried close to being parody. Kurokami, performed by the full group of eight players, opened the performance as a beautiful example of formal austerity. Partly sung, the 10-minute example reached something close to the hypnotic sphere of experience. The effect proved ravishing, largely because the ensemble and intonation were superb in the performance Spectacular performance This was followed by Yuji Takahashi's 1994 Three Pieces for Shakuhachi

It provides another vantage into the Philly scene that yielded Blue Note-anointed pianist Robert Glasper, which remains one of the vital jazz communities in the US. Post-war Philadelphia was a hothouse for jazz talent because of its strong community fabric; the case in point being the young John Coltrane and Jimmy Heath, kids in the same neighborhood whose talents were nurtured by parents, teachers and friends. That fabric remains intact, as evidenced by the contemporaneous ascent of Shaw and drummer Johnathan Blake (son of violinist John Blake), who have been playing together since they were 12. Shaw was in high school when he first heard Glasper, who he then befriended before the inevitable move to New York. On

of Piero Scaruffi's History of Jazz Music 1900-2000
A complete alphabetical index would have been too long and costly to produce. This index is a compromise between providing help to locate a musician and saving space/money.
  • Each musician is located via the number of the chapter. See below the numbered list of chapters.
  • For each musician only one entry is given: the place where the main recordings are discussed. This index does not list all the pages in which a musician is mentioned, only the place where a musician's work is analyzed.
  • The names listed in this index are the musicians that are underlined in the text.
If you want to find out all the places where a certain musician is mentioned, you can go to www.scaruffi.com and use the search engine.

      About
Masaoka has made a name for herself by doing new things with an ancient instrument. She plays the koto, a harp-like Japanese zither, from which she summons a full range of plucks, scrapes, rattles, and beautifully cascading flurries. Her original background in Japanese Gagaku court music has over the years given way to endeavors in computer-based Electronic music, textural Free Improvisation, and Bop-ish jazz. However, rather than merely making gimmicky use of an "exotic" instrument by placing it in foreign contexts, she establishes herself on equal footing by taking an assertive, headfirst approach. Her playing can be alternately tumultuous and peaceful, confrontational and supportive, but always distinguishes itself through a unique sense of space and sonic detail. While awkward moments of culture-clash can occasionally surface, Masaoka's accomplishments bear the mark of one confidently heading into uncharted territory.

11 Jan 2007 Category: Features Worldwide Japan Music ... Technology Every time Miya Masaoka touches the laser, a prerecorded koto sound sample gets triggered through her Apple. Photo by Lori Eanes Experimental technicians-slash-musicians have always tried to push the boundaries of sound. That’s why there is a nice collection of undoubtedly strange instruments on this planet! Just think of electronic inventions such as the Theremin and its ghostly whining. Today we picked a recent-queer one for you: The Laser Koto ! American Miya Masaoka updated the koto , a giant traditional Japanese instrument resembling a zither , to modern digital music making and enhanced it with laser beams. Eventually she replaced the whole analogue corpus with lasers and connects that to an Apple computer. For real, this Laser Koto is definitely something strange along the way of the intertwined relationship between music and technology. Or maybe this is Miya’s way of keeping up the tradition as a third generation Japanese, currently residing in New York with her little daughter!? PingMag talked to Miya Masaoka about her enhanced instruments – and her sound experiments with insects such as cockroaches and bees. Written by Verena
