I do not like placing the creative process under a microscope, to explain a work, to look at the molecules (so to speak) instead of examining the body as a whole. So far as I am concerned, a work should live by itself, and not as a result of analyses. I do not think that it is necessary for the public to enter the laboratory, where it understands nothing, and where the artist himself sometimes needs to reflect a long time in order to grasp the meaning of things." Bohuslav Martinu With over 400 opus numbers to his credit, Martinu, like Telemann, could have easily filled the requirements of an Eighteenth Century Kapellmeister, yet he was often surprised to learn of his being considered a prolific composer. He felt composition to be the natural process of a man who "works and works". He devoted only a few hours each day to composition, the rest of his time being devoted to studying science (which branch or branches I dont know, yet this might be reflected in the laboratory analogy in the above statement) or taking long walks, a venerable tradition among composers. Martinu was born in a church tower, of which his father was caretaker, in the town of Policka in eastern Bohemia. He showed great musical ability at an early age. At 8 years, he gave his first concerts and at age 10 started composing. His abilities so impressed his neighbors that the wealthy people of the town contributed funds to enable this caretakers son to attend the Prague Conservatory. After graduating in 1913, he made his living playing violin in the Czech Philharmonic until 1923. Although he had a Conservatory education in performance, in the field of composition he was virtually self-taught. In 1923, Martinu took what he thought would be a short trip to Paris. He wound up staying for 17 years, leaving only because of the Nazi occupation. His works in this Parisian period show the influence of Debussy, Stravinsky and Les Six. He also found a sympathetic adviser in composer Albert Roussel.

and Igor Stravinsky Claude Debussy Richard Strauss . The works, culminating in the ballet Istar, are good, but not terribly individual or memorable. From about 1918 through the 1920s, Martin worked hard to discover his true artistic self. Czech Rhapsody , the Three Czech Dances for two pianos, and the Duo No. 1 for violin and cello hint at works written twenty years later. He comes more and more under the influence of Stravinsky, but unlike many others becomes less like Stravinsky and more Czech. Perhaps he saw the relation of Russian folk music to Stravinsky's highly sophisticated and knowing musical approach and figured out his artistic salvation. Whatever, Czech folk influences become subject to a neoclassical musical view. At this point, we get such works as the Suites for string orchestra

    Biography
Version française It is perhaps understandable that a person who was born into the world to the accompaniment of festive bells would have grown up to become a great musician. Such, indeed, was the case of the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. Bohuslav's father was the bell ringer and watchman in the little Bohemian town of Policka. His job was to act as fire watcher for the village and to ring the church bells for prayers and festive occasions. Thus it was that in the small tower room of the church of St. James, where the Martinus lived, on the public holiday of 8 December 1890, Bohuslav was born with the sound of church bells ringing joyously all round him. Young Bohuslav, who was tall, thin, and weakly, often had to be carried by his father up and down the 193-step staircase in the tower. He spent the first twelve years of his life looking at his village from this bird's-eye perspective. The memory of this view of the world impressed itself upon Bohuslav's young mind and remained with him all his life, strongly influencing his ideas of composition. As he was to write later in life, it was "not the small interests of people, the cares, the hurts, or the joys" that he saw from that great height, but "space, which I always have in front of me." When Bohuslav had hardly begun public school, his parents entrusted him to the care of the Policka music teacher. This teacher was the first to recognize the lad's genius and encouraged him to try composing. Bohuslav never forgot that first teacher for pointing him on his way toward the goal of becoming a great composer.

    MARTINU, BOHUSLAV BIOGRAPHY
Born in a church tower in the Bohemian village of Policka, Bohuslav Martinu was a prolific enough composer as a child, before he entered Prague Conservatory as a violin student in 1906. His interest, however, lay in composition. Failing to complete his course at the Conservatory or at the Prague Organ School, to which he had been transferred, he worked as an orchestral player before moving, in 1923, to Paris. The approach of the German armies in 1940 forced him to make his way, as best he could, to the United States, where he was encouraged by commissions from Koussevitzky. Political events in Czechoslovakia prevented his intended return after the war, and he spent his final years abroad, dying in Switzerland in 1959. Stage Music Martinu was an immensely prolific and varied composer. His sixteen operas include The Greek Passion, after Kazantzakis, Ariadne, after Neveu, and the radio opera Comedy on the Bridge. Ballet scores include Spalicek, based on fairy-tales and nursery rhymes.
