He wrote five books of Pi¨ces de viole ) for the instrument, generally suites with basso continuo . Marin Marais was the central figure in the French school of bass-viol composers and performers that flourished during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He spent his entire life in Paris, and the greater part of it in royal service. First appointed as Ordinaire de la Musique de la Chambre du Roi in 1685, he retained that post throughout the reign of Louis XIV and from 1715 to 1725 served under the Regency and Louis XV. His contemporaries recognized him as an outstanding performer and a composer of stature whose works for viols and the operatic stage were known beyond the boundaries of France.
Titon relates that Marais was born in Paris on May 31, 1656, and died there on August 15, 1728. as a boy, he was a member of the choir of Sainte-Chapelle and in his teens studied the basse de viole with Hotman and Sainte-Colombe, both important figures in the early development of French string music. Marais entered the royal orchestra as a soloist in 1685 and about the same time became a member of the orchestra of the Acadèmie Royale de Musique. In the latter position he played under the direction of Lully, who later became his teacher in composition. Marais spent the remainder of his life performing and composing, and also fathering nineteen children, several of whom became important figures in French musical life.
Although Marais' operas, trio sonatas, and other compositions were widely performed during his lifetime, the most significant part of his musical output is represented by the five books of Pièces de Violes that he produced over a period of forty years, between 1686 and 1725. These collections include more than 550 compositions for one, two, and three bass viols and figured bass. All volumes were originally published by the composer. The Pièces de Violes represent an accomplishment of great scope and originality. Historically, they constitute the full flowering of an established French musical tradition, the culmination of an art that had its origins in the 16th century. In sheer numbers the books surpass the production of any other composer for the bass viol. In musical variety and range of instrumental expression, they stand alone in the contributions to the literature for that instrument.

W hile recognized as a virtuoso in his day, Marin Marais had, until very recently, fallen into obscurity. An underrated but talented composer, Marais devoted his entire life to the viola da gamba, or viol, as it is known today. Apprenticed to the master Sainte-Colombe while in his teens, he achieved renown early in life and was appointed court composer ("Ordinarie de la Chambre du Roi") by Louis IV, the Sun King. Marais was only twenty-three years old at the time. Today, Marin Marais is widely recognized as the premier composer of works for the viol. To be sure, there have been other well-known composers who created pieces for the viol such as Couperin, Telemann, Bach, and Forqueray; but none devoted their creative powers solely to the service of the viol.

    Marin Marais
French composer and bass viol player. A choirboy at Saint Germain L'Auxerrois, he studied bass viol with Sainte-Colombe and composition with Lully , joining the royal orchestra in 1676, and being named ordinaire de la chambre du roi in 1679. Marais spent his entire life in Paris as a famous virtuoso on the instrument, retiring from royal service in 1725. Lully's influence can be seen in Marais' four operas ( Alcide, Ariane et Baccus, Alcione, 1709), which were quite successful during his lifetime. Marais' most important compositions, however, are the five collections of music for one to three bass viols with figured bass published between 1686 and 1725, a total of 593 pieces. These include typical dance movements as well as fantaisies, rondeaux, tombeaux, Le tableau de l'opération de la taille that depicts an operation to remove a stone in the bladder. Marais' (Paris, 1692) are regarded as the first appearance of the trio sonata in France.

    MARAIS, MARIN BIOGRAPHY
Marin Marais, player of the viola da gamba and pupil of Sainte-Colombe, has won much wider recent fame through the cinema. In his own time he was accounted the principal virtuoso of his time on the instrument, for which he wrote a number of compositions. He studied composition with Lully and as a member of the French royal musical establishment performed with him. Instrumental Music The instrumental music of Marais consists chiefly of his various collections of pieces for one or more viols, which include the now well known Variations on Les folies d'Espagne (La Follia). Operas The four operas of Marais were written under the influence of Lully and enjoyed contemporary success.

    Tous les matins du monde
This movie, released in 1991 in France and in 1992 in the US, is the result of a collaboration between a novelist, Pascal Quignard , a director Alain Corneau , and a musician, Jordi Savall . Corneau wanted to do a movie on music and the 17th century; he met Quignard, who had already written about the viol, and suggested that they do the story of Marin Marais (1656-1728), one of the best viol players and composers of the time, and his teacher Sainte Colombe. Quignard had discovered the music of Sainte Colombe through a recording made by Jordi Savall in 1976. Quignard wrote the book, Corneau took the book and worked with Quignard and Savall to make the movie. Savall plays the music on the soundtrack The subject of the movie is the life of the French viol player and composer Sainte-Colombe. What little evidence there is on his life was woven into a fictional narrative by Pascal Quignard in a novel written specifically for this project. He then adapted his own novel for the screen, in collaboration with Corneau and with advice from Savall. The title comes from a sentence in the novel: "Tous les matins du monde sont sans retour," meaning literally "all the mornings of the world [leave] without [ever] returning." It can be translated as "Each day dawns but once."

MARIN MARAIS Dr David C F Wright Gerald Hayes, in his important book on viols and other bowed instruments published in 1930, was, I think, the first to suggest that Marais was 'a composer whose gifts, were they but fully appreciated by his countrymen, should set his name beside that of Couperin, at the head of French music'. Marais published five part-books of music for viola da gamba, Book I in 1686, although there was a further wait of three years for the basse continue parts, Book II in 1701 in the same divided way, Book III in 1711 , Book IV in 1717 and finally Book V in 1725 The chief source of information for Marais's imperfectly documented life is Titon du Tillet's "Parnasse Français" (1732), a goldmine of penetrating insight into the lives of musicians and composers active in France in the early 18th century, many of whom would otherwise be lost to posterity. We know nothing of Marais's parents or antecedents, but he was born in Paris on 31 May 1656. As a child he entered the choir of Sainte-Chapelle and, as a youth, he studied the viol with Hottemann and with Saint-Colombe, a great master of the instrument, whose sixty seven "Concerts a deux violes esgales", an astonishing corpus of music for gamba duet, remained totally unknown until transcribed and edited by Paul Hooreman and published by Heugel in 1973.
