Mahler, Gustav Born: Kaliste, Bohemia, 7 July 1860
Died: Vienna, 18 May 1911
Nationality: Bohemian-Austrian composer
In 1860 his family moved to Jihlava, where Gustav took piano and theory lessons. From 1875 to 1878 he was at Vienna Conservatory, where he studied the piano, harmony and composition. After that he attended university lectures, worked as a music teacher and composed "Das klagende Lied," a cantata indebted to the operas of Weber and Wagner but also showing many conspicuously Mahlerian features. In 1880 Mahler accepted a conducting post at a summer theatre at Bad Hall, and he was engaged in a similar capacity in 1881 and 1883 at the theatres in Ljubljana and Olomouc. Between these appointments he engaged in composition and other conducting until, in autumn 1883, he became music director at Kassel. He found conditions uncongenial, and the repertory consisted solely of light opera; but an unhappy love affair with one of the singers led to the composition of his first masterpiece, the song cycle "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen," and the inception of the closely related First Symphony. At Vienna Mahler brought a stagnating opera house to a position of unrivalled brilliance, especially during 1903-7, when he collaborated with the designer Alfred Roller on a series of memorable productions. In 1901 he had a villa built at Maiernigg on the Wörthersee in Carinthia, where he spent the summers composing. In 1902 he married Alma, daughter of the artist Emil Jakob Schindler, and though their life together was not untroubled (its strains caused him to consult Freud for psychoanalysis in 1910) the security benefited his creative life. At Maiernigg he completed symphonies nos.5-8 and in 1904 the "Kindertotenlieder," settings of five poems by Rückert on the death of children. The death of Mahler's own elder daughter, Maria, from scarlet fever three years later left him distraught.

GUSTAV MAHLER
SONG SYMPHONIST
By Gabriel Engel
Foreword
This biography is not an unqualified eulogy. It is the first life of Gustav Mahler written by one who cannot boast a more or less intimate personal acquaintance with him. It is, nevertheless, the first account of his life based on his collected letters, [Gustav Mahler Briefe. Paul Zsolnay Verlag, Vienna.] the recent publication of which has at last made available material proving him to have been a far more human and fascinating figure than the haloes of sentiment cast over him by German biographies will admit. Therefore, the author of this book, the first on the subject conceived and written in English, believes he is justified in having made frequent and generous quotations from these letters, and acknowledges gratefully the kindness of the publisher, Paul Zsolnay of Vienna, in permitting him to make them. Mahler's compositions receive much the same treatment in these pages as other incidents in his life; for he lived his works, and nothing was more abhorrent to him than the guide-book explanations and programmatic rhapsodies which constitute the rather rambling method of the biographies by his countrymen. The book is necessarily short; for it is a first word from a new point-of-view. Yet it is no mere chronicle of dates and facts intended to preface an esthetic discussion of the thousand and one details of nine colossal symphonies. It is primarily and almost entirely a narrative.

The Idealist: A Profile of Gustav Mahler Jeffrey Dane profiles Gustav Mahler - a man of paradoxes and genius, and of contradictions and complexities that were in keeping with the magnitude and character of his work. by Jeffrey Dane When still a child, he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up. His arresting reply: "A martyr." He was about five years old. He was instrumental in altering musical history. He did this almost single-handedly, not in concert with others, wrenching the realm of his work from one era into the next. The orchestral and harmonic innovations he introduced, especially in his later works, belonged to the dawn of 20th-century music. He foreshadowed those who followed him, and what he left posterity had a dramatic and lasting impact. Aware that much of his work was misunderstood in his day, he said, "My time will yet come" - and it did. The regard in which Gustav Mahler is still held so long after his death is surrounded by an atmosphere that may be impossible to define and difficult to explain, but it's very easy to recognize: his tenure as the Director of the most prestigious musical entity in Austria is even now, a century later, called the Golden Age of the Vienna Opera. This bespeaks an astounding degree of reverence and is a reflection of his professional and personal impact. He earned his livelihood as a conductor, but his life's work was as a composer. The musical public-at-large saw him as a superb opera and orchestral conductor who also wrote symphonies of gargantuan scope, while Mahler saw himself as a composer forced into the role of conductor. His home of choice was Austria, and of necessity late in life, New York, where he spent three seasons. In those days, his yearly salary in Vienna for nine or ten months' work had amounted in Austrian currency to the equivalent of about $4,000, a handsome sum at the time. When he was invited to America, to conduct the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall at a salary, for three months' work, of $30,000 - an astronomical sum at that time - he agreed to the proposal. (His eventual successor, Josef Stransky, was offered only half as much).

Hamburger Nachrichten , Ferdinand Pfohl, wrote this of him: Mahler was a mystic, a God-seeker. His imagination circled incessantly around these matters, around God and the world, around life and death, around spiritual matters and nature. Eternity and immortality were at the centre of his thoughts. Death and eternity are the great theme of his art. He wanted to believe, belief at any price.
      Mahler and Alienation
The Music of Gustav Mahler , puts this into a broader perspective: Leonard Bernstein In his televised documentary, The Little Drummer Boy
Much of the struggle and pain is expressed through one of the aspects of his style that was uniquely Mahlerian and at the time revolutionary; a style where the tragic and the commonplace sit side by side, where elevated classical themes are followed by popular street music, where a heavenly adagio might be suddenly interrupted by a hurdy-gurdy tune. Stephen Johnson provides an example of the effect in his essay on Mahler in A Guide To The Symphony L¤ndler
