MAHLER, GUSTAV BIOGRAPHY
Born at Kaliste in Bohemia, the son of a Jewish pedlar, Gustav Mahler later described himself as three times homeless, a Bohemian in Austria, an Austrian among Germans and a Jew throughout the world, everywhere an intruder, never welcomed. His principal musical training was at the Vienna Conservatory, after which he embarked on a career as a conductor which took him to important positions in Budapest, Hamburg and finally at the Vienna State Opera, where he made a number of major reforms. Hostility fomented by sections of the press forced his resignation in 1907, after which he briefly continued a distinguished international career as a conductor, notably in New York, until his death in 1911. As a composer Mahler wrote symphonies that absorbed into their texture and form the tradition of German song in music that reflected in many ways the spirit of the time in which he lived, in all its variety. Orchestral Music Mahler completed nine symphonies, leaving a tenth unfinished, in addition to Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a symphony in all but name, settings of a series of poems derived from the Chinese. The first of the symphonies, sometimes known as "Titan", includes a remarkable ironic funeral march that transforms a nursery tune. Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 8 make use of voices, the last of these on a massive scale. The symphonies, in their variety of mood, offer a reflection of the world, with music that may occasionally be garish and yet often reaches unsurpassable heights.

INTRODUCTION Gustav Mahler was early recognized as one of the greatest conductors of his time. Yet he was highly controversial as a composer, both during his life and in the years after his death. In 1933, because of his Jewish roots, the Nazis prohibited his music both in Germany and in the occupied countries. His last refuge was then the Anglo-Saxon world. It is only in the sixties that little by little his music found its rightful place in concert repertories, thanks largely to recordings.

Musicale-BGM] Mahler was long accused of being "banal" because of the heterogeneous nature of his melodic material and "sentimental" because of his expressiveness, which was thought to be self-indulgent. Today, his use of stylized folk material seems to be one of the most original and forward-looking aspects of his style. For us, he is an exceptional composer, not just because of the breadth and power of his ten symphonies, but also because of his place in history, right at the junction of two centuries and two eras—the romantic and the modern. His evolution is fascinating, from the First Symphony of his youth, which doesn’t resemble any other music of his time, all the way to the Ninth, which is very close to the future masterpieces of Berg and Webern. Theodor Adorno said that Mahler was the first musician since Beethoven to have a "late style".

At age fifteen Gustav entered the Vienna Conservatory, where he received a diploma three years later. The early failure of his own music to win recognition sparked a remarkable conducting career that took Mahler to all the great opera houses and concert halls of Europe. Conducting earned him a fortune, but it also meant that composing, his first love, was relegated to the off-season. Throughout much of his life, Mahler composed in isolation in summer cottages. Fidelio, which he almost single-handedly rescued from a reputation for tawdriness. In 1902 Mahler married Alma Schindler, a woman nearly twenty years his junior. They had two daughters, and when Mahler set to work on his Kindertotenlieder The Mahler biographer Henry-Louis de La Grange has effectively contradicted the popular image of Mahler as congenitally ill. A small man, Mahler was nonetheless physically active, an avid hiker and swimmer throughout most of his life. Nonetheless, he was a man drunk on work, and he grew more inebriated with age. His response to the fatigue and illness was often simply to work more. In 1901, for example, he collapsed after conducting, in the same day, a full-length opera and a symphony concert. He immediately set to work on his Symphony no. 5, which begins with a funeral march. Gustav Mahler's first composition, written at age six, combined a jolly polka with a solemn funeral dirge.

You are looking at the first, faltering steps toward a complete overhaul of this site. When (when!) it is complete, this page will have much more information than the previous version. In the meantime the following recordings are well worth checking out:
  • Symphony No.2 The 1965 Klemperer BRSO now officially released by EMI in good sound; a superb performance.
  • Symphony No.3
  • Symphony No.4 Donald Clarke's Chief Records' transfer of Horenstein's 1970 4th is a revelation and shows a great performance which had been lurking under lousy LP sound. A performance which shgows the darker side (yes there is one) of Mahler 4 and which for me ranks right alongside... Paul Kletzki's 1957 EMI account with the great Philharmonia Orchestra, almost certainly one of the late-lamented Dennis Brain's last recordings. Kletzki allows the music to speak for itself (easier said than done) and the result is simply delectable.
  • Symphony No.5 Frank Shipway's RPO account (Tring, if you can find it) is at budget price, but don't let that put you off hearing this superb performance.
  • Symphony No.8

    Gustav Mahler
While his music was less appreciated in his day, he is now hailed as one of the last great romantic composers in the tradition of Beethoven, Brahms and Wagner. His musical legacy inspired early 20th century disciples such as Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg. Mahler's nakedly emotional work consists of nine symphonies which are huge in orchestral scale, and seven song cycles often based on folk elements. Equally as prominent was Mahler the conductor who greatly enriched orchestral resources and elevated the standards of the musical play. He too was a prodigy whose father supported his talent. Barely ten when he staged his first piano recital, he soon graduated to composition by way of conducting operettas and ever-more demanding repertoires. His reputation behind the podium peaked as the musical director of the Vienna Opera (1897 - 1907), the outstanding institution of its kind and time. An unrelenting perfectionist, Mahler insisted on technically precise performances faithful to the original scores - demanding much of his singers and musicians whom he often antagonized. Malicious intrigues and anti-Semitism drove him from Vienna to America where he led the New York Metropolitan Opera; then the New York Philharmonic which he built into the world-class organization it remains today. Among his classics are colossal choral pieces like his eighth symphony, the haunting Das Lied von der Erde, and the deeply moving song cycle, Kindertotenlieder.

    Introduction
Mahler was a composer of symphonies and lieder cycles. However, during his lifetime, he was known, for the most part, as one of the world's greatest conductors. Mahler rose to prominence as musical director of the Vienna Opera, and under his leadership the VO experienced its golden age. Mahler finished his conducting career in the United States, serving with Toscanini as conductor of the Metropolitan Opera and solely as music director of the New York Philharmonic. Mahler completed ten symphonies (nine numbered works and Das Lied von der Erde) and died leaving sketches and two completed movements of a tenth numbered symphony. (Performance versions of the 10th have been presented by several individuals, including Deryck Cooke [in several revised forms], Clinton Carpenter, Joseph Wheeler and Remo Mazetti.

Symphony No.1 in D Major' on to my Disc player, because there is more than a hint of irony in this parody of a funeral march, with snatches of folk tunes and a distinctly Yiddish melody blended in.
Freres Jacques' made deeply somber; a double bass ponderously intones the usually jolly music in a minor key, and muffled drum beats add to the funereal air. Other themes intervene, including a lilting Jewish dance, both sad yet sprightly. Another more touching interlude is one of Mahler's own songs. Then the march returns before finally dying away to soft cymbal strokes. The echoes of Jewish music in this movement recall his childhood in the small town of Iglau, now known as Jihlava in the Czech Republic.
In this capital of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, most government and other important public posts were open only to Roman Catholics. Mahler was born a Jew, so in order to secure the coveted post he became a convert.
But there remained a conflict in his mind between the faith he was born into, and the one he adopted for the sake of his career. Almost certainly this contributed to the emotional struggles that Mahler expressed so passionately through his music.

    Gustav Mahler
    Biography
Mahler was best known during his own lifetime as one of the leading orchestral and operatic conductors of the day. He has since come to be acknowledged as among the most important late-romantic composers, although during his lifetime his music was never fully accepted by the musical establishment. Mahler composed primarily symphonies and songs; however, his approach to genre often blurred the lines between orchestral Lied, symphony, and symphonic poem. Read more at Wikipedia...
