Czech-born Austrian composer and conductor. Mahler's music stands at the point of transition between nineteenth-century romanticism and twentieth-century modernism.
Gustav Mahler's career reflects the artistic ambivalence of the end of the nineteenth century. As a conductor, Mahler's aim was to preserve the tradition of composers of the past, and he was a tireless champion of Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner. In his composition, on the other hand, he embodied many of the new ideas of modernism and fostered the music of his more radical contemporaries, such as Arnold Schoenberg. In the end, his music was overshadowed by these new currents, but has been revived and reevaluated in the last three decades.
Mahler was born in a small Bohemian town, where he studied music with local teachers. In 1875 he went to Vienna to study at the conservatory, where he remained until 1878. Upon finishing his studies, he took a series of conducting posts throughout Central and Eastern Europe, including Budapest, Hamburg, and Leipzig. It was in Leipzig that he first attracted notice with his interpretation of Wagner's Ring
In New York, he was engaged as conductor for the Metropolitan Opera, and later the New York Philharmonic. When he died at the age of fifty, he was working on his tenth symphony, a work he had postponed thinking it something of a curse (pointing to Beethoven, Schubert, and Bruckner). His "real" tenth symphony

Gustav Mahler was an Austrian composer and conductor. His compositions are few in numberthey consist chiefly of nine completed symphonies and seven song cyclesbut vast in scale, often taking an hour or more to perform and calling for a very large orchestra, sometimes with a chorus and vocal soloists. Little appreciated in its own time, Mahler's music is now seen as an important link between the lyrical impulse of the Romantic era and the more ironic attitudes of the arts in the 20th century. The same tension between idealism and harsh reality that inspired much of his music also characterized Mahler's career as a conductor, where his refined taste and perfectionism often had magnificent artistic results, but also tended to alienate audiences and musicians.
The son of a Jewish distiller, Mahler heard a rich variety of folk and art music during his Bohemian boyhood; the melodies that give compassionate humanity to his symphonies have their roots here. He studied in Vienna, taking courses at both the conservatory and the university, and attending the lectures of composer Anton Bruckner. In 1880, shortly before making his conducting debut at a summer theater in the Austrian spa of Hall, Mahler completed his first mature composition, the cantata

Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911)
Background

Gustav Mahler was born in Kalist, Bohemia, in 1860. He was the second child, and the first of fourteen to survive. After his birth, his family moved to Jihlava, where his father ran a tavern and distillery. He began learning the piano at age 6, giving his first public recital in 1870. He studied briefly in Prague, before entering the Vienna Conservatory in 1875.
The Vienna Conservatory
While at the Conservatory, he studied piano under J. Epstein, harmony under R. Fuchs, and composition with Franz Krenn. He became one of the earliest supporters of Anton Bruckner , declaring his music the most original to have appeared in many years. During his stay at the Conservatory, Mahler composed and played in performances of his piano quintet and violin sonata.
Early conducting success
After leaving the Conservatory, Mahler began his career as a conductor in 1880 in a series of provincial opera houses. During his post at Kassel in 1883-5 he had an unhappy love affair recorded in his song-cycle 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen' (Songs of a Wayfarer). He moved to Prague in 1885, and in the next year to Leipzig, where he became second conductor to the great conductor Artur Nikisch. During his period at Leipzig, he accepted an invitation from Weber's descendents to reconstruct Weber's unfinished opera 'Das drei Pintos'. The opera was a resounding success when it was first performed in 1888.

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Kaliste, Bohemia 7 July, 1860; died Vienna, 18 May 1911). In 1860 his family moved to Jihlava, where Gustav took piano and theory lessons. From 1875 to 1878 he was at Vienna Conservatory, where he studied the piano, harmony and composition. After that he attended university lectures, worked as a music teacher and composed Das klagende Lied , a cantata indebted to the operas of Weber and Wagner but also showing many conspicuously Mahlerian features. In 1880 Mahler accepted a conducting post at a summer theatre at Bad Hall, and he was engaged in a similar capacity in 1881 and 1883 at the theatres in Ljubljana and Olomouc. Between these appointments he engaged in composition and other conducting until, in autumn 1883, he became music director at Kassel. He found conditions uncongenial, and the repertory consisted solely of light opera; but an unhappy love affair with one of the singers led to the composition of his first masterpiece, the song cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen , and the inception of the closely related First Symphony Early in 1885 Mahler secured the post of second conductor at the Neues Stadttheater in Leipzig, to begin in July 1886, and a few months later he resigned his post at Kassel. The intervening year he spent at the Landestheater in Prague, where he had the opportunity of conducting operas by

Having lived a divided life of triumph and heartbreak, of optimism and hopelessness, it is only fitting that the music of Gustav Mahler portrays such conflict and arouses varying reactions in listeners, from fierce adoration to outright dislike. Mahler was born on July 7, 1860, in Kalischt, Bohemia, to the owners of a brandy distillery. Gustav was the second of twelve children born to Bernhard and Marie Mahler, six of whom died very young and one of whom committed suicide. Gustav did show a musical precocity and Bernhard, open to his son's talent, began paying for piano lessons. Gustav gave his first public recital in Iglau at the age of ten, before finding his way to the Prague Gymnasium and Vienna Conservatory. His conservatory period was generally a success, having won awards for piano playing and composition, but having first dealt with the anti-Semitic views of Vienna's musical establishment. Mahler chose to conduct while earning a sparse composing income, working through the smaller halls of Bohemia and Hungary before establishing himself as a podium

Born in Bohemia, the sensitive and musically talented Mahler entered the Vienna Conservatory to study music at the age of fifteen. Encouraged to compose, Mahler's greatest successes in life nevertheless came as a conductor of symphonies and operas. In 1897, he became the director of the Vienna Opera , a post he held for ten years. During this period, he not only built up the quality and prestige of the Opera, but found time to compose eight large symphonies and four collections of songs. Gustav Mahler was born in Kalischt. He was the son of a poor Jewish pedlar and in later years he referred to himself as a thrice homeless man: a Bohemian among Austrians, an Austrian among Germans and a Jew among the people of the whole world. He began to study piano at the age of six and was already an accomplised pianist when he entered the Vienna Conservatoire at the age of 15. Much of his career was spent as an opera conductor working in Budapest, Hamburg and finally in Vienna, where his energy and competence as artistic director soon made the Vienna Court Opera the finest company in Europe. Mahler resigned from this post in 1907 when he was unable to sustain the workload any longer due to heart problems and the death of his eldest daughter. He spent the last years of his life conducting in Europe and the United States. He was a prolific composer and tried to write music so varied and grandiose that the whole world was reflected in it. Gustav Mahler Works Mahler completed nine symphonies, leaving a tenth unfinished, in addition to Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a symphony in all but name, based on old Chinese poems.

Gustav Mahler - his life Gustav Mahler was born on 7 July 1860 in Bohemia and died on 18 May 1911 aged 50. His father was an innkeeper, and Gustav was the second of 14 children, though many of his siblings died as children, and his musical gifted brother Otto committed suicide in 1895. In 1901 he married Alma Schindler and they had two daughters together, Anna and Maria. His early marriage seemed to be happy, and some love themes in his works depict Alma or his relationship with her. Strains began to show in their marriage after the tragic death of Maria, aged four, following completion of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. On top of this he was diagnosed with a fatal heart condition and subject not just to musical criticism but also public expressions of anti-Semitism. Some years later, when Mahler's works were beginning to receive a certain recognition, Alma had succumbed to alcoholism. At the sanatorium where she was treated she met and had an affair with Walter Gropius. A life so full of tragic events clearly had a major influence on much of Mahler's output, though there is also much in his music which expresses joy and hope. Mahler has said that his music is about life, and there is clearly an autobiographical aspect to his works, where a "hero" struggles with the meaning of life, death, love and disappointment. However, Mahler withdrew any programmatic comments he had previously made about his compositions saying that they should be appreciated as pure music and this is indeed the best approach.
