Martin Luther King Day Quotes
The following selected quotations are from Martin Luther King's writings. They give the reader some spiritual understanding of the man which this national holiday of the United States of America celebrates. All quotes are from the online documents at the Martin Luther King Jr. Directory.
The Negro and the Constitution (in The Cornellian, May 1944)
We cannot be truly Christian people so long as we flaunt the central teachings of Jesus: brotherly love and the Golden Rule. The spirit of Lincoln still lives; that spirit born of the teachings of the Nazarene, who promised mercy to the merciful, who lifted the lowly, strengthened the weak, ate with publicans, and made the captives free. In the light of this divine example, the doctrines of demagogues shiver in their chaff. America experiences a new birth of freedom in her sons and daughters; she incarnates the spirit of her martyred chief. Their loyalty is repledged; their devotion renewed to the work He left unfinished. My heart throbs anew in the hope that inspired by the example of Lincoln, imbued with the spirit of Christ, they will cast down the last barrier to perfect freedom. And I with my brother of blackest hue possessing at last my rightful heritage and holding my head erect, may stand beside the Saxona Negroand yet a man!
An Autobiography of Religious Development (Nov. 1950 essay)

Martin Luther's dirty little book:
On the Jews and their lies
A precursor to Nazism

Introduction I wish to make clear that the purpose of these selections from Martin Luther aims at providing a historical and scholarly source for study of anti-Semitism, religious thought, and how it has influenced the German population and their outlook on Jews. There will always exist a potential for misuse of any information. However, it has come from observation that hiding such information from view can lead (and has led) to unconscious support of underground movements of anti-Semitism that use these texts for their various nefarious purposes. Bringing this information to light will allow critical analyses by not only scholars, but also by everyday people to help dispel the myths founded by unsupported beliefs and to help fight the tools used by anti-Semitic cults.
A little about Dr. Martin Luther (1483-1546) Luther, a German theologian and religious reformer, initiated the Protestant Reformation and forever split Christianity from Catholicism. His influence extends beyond religion to politics, economics, education and language. In 1505, after receiving a bachelor's and master's degree, he suddenly abandoned his studies, entered the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt and became a monk. He became a controversial figure when he published his Ninety-Five Theses, opposing the indulgences (release from the penalties for sin through the payment of money by the Catholic Church). This resulted in his split from the Roman Catholic Church where he established unique Christian interpretations about the Bible and theology. His influence resulted in the major Protestant denomination of Lutheranism where their churches today use Luther's name.

While Martin Luther King Day is a day on which to celebrate the life and achievements of a great civil rights leader, it is also a day to reflect upon how far our nation has to go to end the scourge of racism and for discussing means to change associated attitudes and behaviors. Psychology plays a key role in explaining the underlying reasons for racism and how to develop strategies for long-lasting social change. In addition, psychology can help explain the impact of bias and stereotyping on people, their health and general well-being.

  • E-Mail Print Share: "Our fellow citizens have got to understand that by loving a neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself, by reaching out to someone who hurts, by just simply living a life of kindness and compassion, you can make America a better place and fulfill the dream of Martin Luther King," Bush said at a library named for the slain civil rights leader. With first lady Laura Bush at his side, Bush spoke briefly on the federal holiday honoring the birthday of King, who would have been 79 on Jan. 15.

King's son says Clinton erred
But adds that controversy is overblown
Email Print Text size By David Abel Globe Staff January 16, 2008 Martin Luther King III, in Boston for an announcement that the city will build a statue to honor his parents, said yesterday that Senator Hillary Clinton made a mistake by saying his father's call for racial equality was realized only with a president's action. The statement has drawn sharp exchanges in recent days between the campaigns of Clinton and Senator Barack Obama. King, son of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, said he thought the controversy had been blown out of proportion. However, he also said that Clinton's words were potentially denigrating. "I wish it was said in a different way," he said before addressing a packed Twelfth Baptist Church in Roxbury, where his father once preached. He added later: "What I think, fundamentally, is that, between the media and the two candidates, a lot is being stirred up. What I assume she was trying to say is that a president needs leadership and vision. I don't believe her intent was to diminish my dad."

Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta, Georgia on 15th January, 1929. Both his father and grandfather were Baptist preachers who had been actively involved in the civil rights movement. King graduated from Morehouse College in 1948. After considering careers in medicine and law, he entered the ministry.
While studying at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, King heard a lecture on Mahatma Gandhi and the nonviolent civil disobedience campaign that he used successfully against British rule in India. King read several books on the ideas of Gandhi, and eventually became convinced that the same methods could be employed by blacks to obtain civil rights in America. He was particularly struck by Gandhi's words: "Through our pain we will make them see their injustice". King was also influenced by Henry David Thoreau and his theories on how to use nonviolent resistance to achieve social change.
After his marriage to Coretta Scott , King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. In Montgomery, like most towns in the Deep South, buses were segregated. On 1st December, 1955, Rosa Parks , a middle-aged tailor's assistant, who was tired after a hard day's work, refused to give up her seat to a white man.

MARTIN LUTHER KING - THE FATAL SHOT CAME FROM A DIFFERENT DIRECTION
In Memoriam: Ted Wilburn, the author of the piece which follows, passed away this morning, June 17, 2002. He had the courage not only to ask questions, but to find the answers when nobody else would. UPDATE! BREAKING: FLORIDA MINISTER SAYS THAT HIS FATHER, NOT JAMES EARL RAY, WAS THE "TRIGGERMAN" IN THE ASSASSINATION OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. On April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel, Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. The official story is that a single man, James Earl Ray, was staying at a rooming house located at 422 South Main Street. Click for full size picture In the back of this rooming house was a shared bathroom with a window that looked out onto the swimming pool of the Lorraine Motel. Click for full size picture According to the government, James Earl Ray shot Dr. Martin Luther King from that window. There is, needless to say, no physical evidence to prove this charge. James Earl Ray spent his life in prison based solely on a coerced confession which he immediately retracted. None of the ballistics tests, which were performed on the rifle James Earl Ray allegedly used, were able to link that rifle to the actual bullet that killed Dr. Martin Luther King. Dr. King's family does not think James Earl Ray was the killer, and recently won a civil court case proving there was a conspiracy. Now, thanks to writer Ted Wilburn, in a story which follows, new evidence has surfaced to prove that the government and the media have been lying to the public about the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.
