Born in Florence , the son of a miller, Lully had little education, musical or otherwise, but he had a natural talent to play the guitar and violin and to dance. In 1646, he was discovered by the Duke of Guise and taken to France by him, where he entered the services of Mademoiselle de Montpensier ( la Grande Mademoiselle as a scullery -boy. There is some dispute over this, however; it is actually possible that he was employed to teach her Italian. With the help of this lady his musical talents were cultivated. He studied the theory of music under Nicolas M©tru . A scurrilous poem on his patroness resulted in his dismissal. He came into Louis XIV's service in late 1652, early 1653 as a dancer. He composed some music for the Ballet de la Nuit which pleased the king immensely. He was appointed as the composer of instrumental music to the king and

At her court in the Tuileries Lully got to know the best in French music and, despite his patroness's dislike of Mazarin and her involvement in the Fronde, he was no stranger to Italian music either. Jean-Baptiste Lully
Composer, b. near Florence in 1633; d. at Paris , 22 March, 1687. He was brought to France when quite a child by Mlle de Montpensier. Having great natural gifts as a violinist, he was soon promoted to be one of the king's band of twenty-four violins, and leader of the private band. He composed a number of popular songs, including "Au clair de la lune", as well as much dance music and violin solos, and he revolutionized the orchestra by his methods. After a study of theory and composition under celebrated masters he set music for the court ballets, and was appointed composer to the king, and music master to the royal family . After his marriage in 1662, he became on very intimate terms with , with whom he collaborated in ballets until 1671. A clever diplomatist and thorough courtier, he completely won the royal favour, and in March, 1672, he succeeded in ousting Perrin from the directorship of the Academy of Music. Thenceforward his success as founder of modern French opera was unquestioned, although Cambert, in 1671, paved the way. From 1672 to 1686

In 1653, after his education with Roberday and Gigault, Lully was employed by the "Sun King," Louis XIV, as composer to that illustrious court. Eight years later he was elevated to director of the royal chamber music , and one year after that to music teacher of the royal family. Lully was director of Paris's Académie royale de musique , in which position he exerted a tremendous influence upon opera in France. His output is primarily operatic, including some collaborative works with Molière. In addition, Lully composed ballets , sacred vocal pieces, and incidental music for the theater.

Jean-Baptiste Lully
French composer (born in Florence). The son of a miller, he was probably entrusted to the care of a local court after the death of his mother, and was taken to France by the Chevalier de Guise in March 1646 to serve as and Italian conversationist in the household of Mlle. de Montpensier. At some point he was tutored in guitar and violin as well as dance; the March 1687 edition of Mercure de France lauds his skill as a violinist, also quoting him as having learned by age 17 everything about music he was ever to know. He studied keyboard with Gigault and Roberday, and cultivated a relationship with Michel Lambert, a highly sought-after singer and air de cour composer who served Lully's patron among other nobles and whose daughter Lully later married. Perhaps partly as a result of Lambert's guidance, Lully quickly gained prestige at court. Mlle. de Montpensier released him from his post in October 1652, after her exile for her participation in the Frondes. He danced several roles in the Ballet de la nuit on February 23, 1653 and succeeded Lazarini as composer of the king's instrumental music a month later. From 1652 he was active at court as a dancer and composer and from 1657 onward was responsible for most of the ballets de cour, with the poet Benserade as chief collaborator. Around this time he also took control of the 16-member "petits violons," who played for the king's meals and traveled in his entourage; contrary to general belief, the group evidently predated Lully's leadership, under which they first performed in
