ALVIN LUCIER was born in 1931 in Nashua, New Hampshire. He was educated in Nashua parochial and public schools, The Portsmouth Abbey School, Yale and Brandeis, and spent two years in Rome on a Fulbright Scholarship. From 1962 to 1969 he taught at Brandeis where he conducted the Brandeis University Chamber Chorus which devoted much of its time to the performance of new music. Since 1970 he has taught at Wesleyan University where he is currently John Spencer Camp Professor of Music. Alvin Lucier has pioneered in many areas of music composition and performance, including the notation of performers' physical gestures, the use of brain waves in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by sound in vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes. His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by means of close tunings with pure tones, sound waves are caused to spin through space. Lucier performs, lectures and exhibits his sound installations extensively in the United States, Europe and Asia. He has visited Japan twice. Alvin Lucier (born May 14 ) is an American composer of experimental music and sound installations that explore acoustic phenomena and auditory perception. Lucier was a member of the influential Sonic Arts Union , which included Robert Ashley David Behrman , and Gordon Mumma . Much of his work is influenced by science and explores the physical properties of sound itself: resonance of spaces, phase interference between closely-tuned pitches, and the transmission of sound through physical media.

"I use technology for acoustical testing a lot of the time, in much the same way an engineer might. I scan a frequency range with an oscillator, for example, and interface it with some other system ... I drive the system in such a way that the result is both unexpected and clear. I've always been interested in cause and effect when the effects are very surprising."
One of the most original pioneers of electronic music, Lucier has broken new ground in many areas of music composition and performance. These have included the notation of performers' physical gestures, the use of brain waves in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by sound in vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes.
From 1966 - 1976, he performed with Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and Gordon Mumma in the Sonic Arts Union. His work has been performed and his installations shown extensively in the United States, Europe and Asia, including the Abiko Festival (Tokyo), DAAD Kunstler Program (Berlin), at venues in Dehli, Madras, and Bombay ... In October 1994, Wesleyan University honored Lucier with a five-day festival, including collaborations with poet John Ashbery and theater designer Robert Wilson. His book, Chambers

His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by means of close tunings with pure tones, sound waves are caused to spin in space. Among these recent works are Small Waves, for trombone, piano, and string quartet with six amplified glass vases; Wave Painting Songs, for soprano and pure wave oscillators; and for five players with Lexicon Acoustic Reverberation System. A new large-scale work for three orchestras, written for the S.E.M. Ensemble, will be performed in May, 1999, in Prague. His works have been performed around the world, and he is represented on over three dozen recordings. In March, 1995, MusikTexte published a bilingual edition of his scores, interviews, and writings, Reflections/Reflexionen.

    Why listen indeed?
By musickna . Wednesday, 15. February 2006, 17:00:13 Experimental Music Alvin Lucier classical music I wanted to add a short companion piece to Troels' explanation of why he listens to classical music, for I feel he made very important points.
And the most important he made is:
Music of high quality contains wisdom. It also contains beauty and health, but for me the possibility of gaining wisdom is the most important. Quality music is an important tool in the quest of coming closer to understanding the principles of existence.
This is something I absolutely agree with. Classical music always aspires to this goal because with the music, the art of the form is foremost.
In this it differs from much popular music. I am not saying that some popular music cannot reach very high artistic levels, for we all know it does, but it does not have to to exist and thrive.
With classical music there is always the pull towards something bigger than the music itself. The greatest engages the entire soul and leaves you wiser.

Artist: LUCIER, ALVIN Title: Anthony Burr/Charles Curtis Label: ANTIOPIC Format: Price: Catalog #: ANSI 002CD "The work of Alvin Lucier needs little introduction. He is certainly one of the most innovative composers of his time, a pioneer and central figure in the world of experimental and electronic composition and performance. His early work, alone and in conjunction with Robert Ashley, David Berhman, Gordon Mumma and others in the Sonic Arts Union which Lucier helped found in 1966 is musically rich while simultaneously exploring the many physical and psychic effects of sound. Pieces such as I Am Sitting in a Room (1970) and Music on a Long Thin Wire (1977) are unequivocal minimalist classics. Recent activity includes sound installation work and compositions for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by concentrating on the combination of close tuning and pure tones, sound is subtly sculpted and shifted to create mesmerizing patterns and sonic shapes. Alvin Lucier finds two extremely sympathetic interpreters of this approach in Charles Curtis (cello) and Anthony Burr (clarinet). This collection of compositions spread over two CDs, including a new piece, titled 'Charles Curtis' and written by Lucier for this project, elicits an intense physical reaction a testament to Lucier's poetic and scientific focus, as well as the deftness of technique with which Curtis and Burr execute these rigorously transcendent compositions. Packaged in a deluxe matte varnished fold-out digipak including a 20 page booklet of illustrations and writings by Alvin Lucier, Hermann Helmholtz and others."
