His appeal to musicians was made in a threefold capacity, and we have, therefore, to deal with Liszt the unrivalled pianoforte virtuoso (1830-48); Liszt the conductor of the "music of the future" at Weimar, the teacher of Tausig, Bulow and a host of lesser pianists, the eloquent writer on music and musicians, the champion of Berlioz and Wagner (1848-61); and Liszt the prolific composer, who for some 35 years continued to put forth pianoforte pieces, songs, symphonic orchestral pieces, cantatas, masses, psalms and oratorios (1847-82). As virtuoso he held his own for the entire period during which he chose to appear in public; but the militant conductor and prophet of Wagner had a hard time of it, and the composer's place is still in dispute. Liszt's father, a clerk to the agent of the Esterhazy estates and an amateur musician of some attainment, was Hungarian by birth and ancestry, his mother an Austrian-German. The boy's gifts attracted the attention of certain Hungarian magnates, who furnished 600 gulden annually for some years to enable him to study music at Vienna and Paris. At Vienna he had lessons in pianoforte playing from

Liszt was a Hungarian pianist and composer of the Romantic period. He was born in the village of Doborján (now called Raiding) to Adam Liszt and Maria Anna Liszt (nee Lager) on October 22, 1811. He was a weak and sickly child. His father worked at the court of Prince Esterházy and was himself a pianist and cellist. He provided Franz with his first music lessons at the age of six. Franz quickly displayed incredible talent. By twelve he had become a remarkable concert artist. Liszt studied and played in Vienna and Paris for most of his early adult life and toured throughout Europe giving concerts. He is credited with the innovation of the modern piano recital. Although Liszt was one of the greatest pianists in history and noted for his showmanship and great skill, no recordings of his playing exist. Liszt was a prolific composer and many of his piano compositions are among the most technically challenging in the repertoire, including the Hungarian Rhapsodies, and Transcendental Etudes. He invented the symphonic poem which is a single-movement orchestral work based on a literary work or character sketch. He is also the first inventor of impressionism and atonal music. Liszt was the first to perform entirely from memory, which has become today's standard. He gave up public performances on the piano in 1847. In 1948 he took a conducting post at the Weimar court. Liszt was an active teacher and performer to the end of his life. He taught over 400 students. He helped found the Liszt School of Music Weimar as well as the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. The archetypal Romantic composer died in Bayreuth

July 31, 1886 - Bayreuth, Germany Franz Liszt [Hungarian: Liszt Ferenc] was a Hungarian virtuoso pianist and composer. He studied and played at Vienna and Paris and for most of his early adulthood toured throughout Europe giving concerts. His virtuosity earned him approbations by composers and performers alike throughout Europe. His great generosity with both time and money benefited the lives of many people: victims of disasters, orphans and the many students he taught for free. He also contributed to the Beethoven memorial fund.
His piano compositions include works such as his Piano Sonata in B minor, and two piano concertos, which have entered the standard repertoire. He also made many exuberant piano transcriptions of operas, famous symphonies, Paganini Caprices, and Schubert Lieder. As would be expected from a pianist-composer of Liszt's virtuosity, many of his piano compositions are amongst the most technically challenging in the repertoire. Biography
In Vienna he was educated in piano technique by Carl Czerny . His father had wanted him to be taught by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, but Hummel's fees were too high. Antonio Salieri taught him the technique of composition and fostered the young Liszt's musical taste.
