Hungarian Supreme Romantic Composer and Piano Virtuoso
Tel Asiado Jun 10, 2007
Franz Liszt's life, influence and works. He is best remembered for orchestral symphonic poems, piano virtuosity, and "Dream of Love."
Hungarian Romantic composer and piano virtuoso Franz Liszt (1811-1886) is best known for his concept of descriptive orchestral music called 'symphonic poem' also known as 'tone poem.' His Hungarian Rhapsodies, Transcendental Studies , and Liebestraume ("Dream of Love") for the piano remain popular. His primary interests in life were threefold - religion, music, and the arts, perhaps we can add the fourth, female companionship - in equal fervor. Liszt was taught the piano by his father and later by Carl Czerny in Vienna, where he made his debut establishing himself as a remarkable concert pianist by age 12. In Paris he studied theory and composition, then travelled widely in Europe, writing the opera

    In his own words...

"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason... Music presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul." Hungarian pianist, composer and conductor. Lizst was an innovator in his piano and orchestral works, and created new approaches to form.
Franz Liszt embodied all of the great ambitions of the Romantic era, and many of its contradictions. His life spanned three generations of Romantic composers. In his early life, he was an extravagant virtuoso, the darling of the ladies, and a creator of new and adventurous music. In his old age, he turned to the church, becoming a priest, writing sacred music, and championing the music of a new generation.
Liszt was born in Hungary, where his father was in the employ of a wealthy family. His early talent in music was rewarded by the support of a group of Hungarian nobles who subsidized his studies in Paris. There he became part of an important circle of artists, writers and musicians that included

Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) Franz Liszt was a virtuoso pianist, composer and Romantic artist par excellence. He is remembered today mainly for his important contributions to piano technique and repertoire. A child prodigy, the young Liszt toured Europe under the guidance of his father (an amateur musician), showing off his amazing pianistic talent. A turning point came when, in his early twenties, Liszt heard the virtuoso violinist Paganini perform. He decided from then on that he would dedicate himself to doing for the piano what Paganini had done for the violin. After isolating himself in intense practice he finally succeeded admirably in that goal, writing a number of works of hither-to unheard-of difficulty, many actually inspired by Paganini's Caprices. Using his own compositions and virtuoso fantasies based on contemporary operas, Liszt took Europe, Russia and Turkey by storm as a soloist. After reaching the highest levels of society and receiving the endorsement of royalty from every European nation, Liszt abruptly gave up the stressful life of a touring concert artist and settled down, at age 37, to other artistic pursuits. The period that followed was a very fruitful one for Liszt. He extensively revised many of his earlier piano pieces to give them more musical and poetic depth, in the process often greatly reducing their technical demands. He also set to work on a number of new and major compositions, including the Sonata in B Minor for piano and symphonies inspired by Goethe's Faust and Dante's Divine Comedy. Finally, he pioneered a new genre of orchestral music, the “symphonic poem”. These works were extensions of his earlier character pieces for piano, and are intended to depict a poetic or dramatic scene in symphonic terms. Liszt was a deeply philosophical man, and much of his music was inspired directly by the poets and writers he admired, including Byron, Goethe, Lamartine and Senancour.

How we work: Franz Liszt, composer/pianist
Liszt was a flamboyant performer: one of the first to improve the recital as spectacle by turning his piano sideways, he'd played in green silk gloves , and later leave them for the swooning, jewelry-tossing ladies in the audience to fight over. He advised his students to read a book while practicing. The advantage of reading a book while practicing for pure technique alone is that it enables us to forget the boredom of playing a passage over and over again, a dozen, or fifty or a hundred times until the body has absorbed it. Not all books, however, lend themselves equally well to this employment. Poetry interferes subtly with the rhythm of the music, and so does really admirable prose. The most useful, I have found for myself, are detective stories, sociology and literary criticism. However, any reading matter that distracts the mind without engaging the sense or the emotions too powerfully will work.

RCM Home Page From the Benefit Concert to the Recital, 1 Concerts by Franz Liszt The recital was first attempted in this period, by Franz Liszt himself. First let us look at a programme he gave in Stamford, southern Lincolnshire, in September 1840: Programme 9 Concert by Franz Liszt, Assembly Rooms, Stamford, 16 September 1840 John Johnson Collection of Ephemera, Bodleian Library, Oxford Fig. 5 . Liszt in a Polish fur coat (1840)

What is new here is the transcriptions of works by Beethoven and Schubert that by then were called classical. But since anything Liszt did became his own artistically, we have to see this programme as significantly different from the eventual piano recital where the performer gave a survey of classical works from a variety of periods.

The American Liszt Society has established a new chapter in the Northwest. Dr. Alexandre Dossin and Dr. Claire Wachter, members of the piano faculty at the University of Oregon, will serve as its President and Vice-President.
The very first event of the chapter could not be better: in January, 2008 the University of Oregon will welcome eminent musicologist Dr. Alan Walker, who is best known for his scholarship surrounding Franz Liszt. His three-volume biography of Franz Liszt is a monumental work that gives insights into the life and music of this historic figure. Dr. Walker is currently Professor Emeritus in the School of Art, Drama and Music, at McMaster University and was invited to Eugene as a Trotter Visiting Professor at the University of Oregon from January 27th until February 4th. To date he has published thirteen books, and has received many awards in recognition of his scholarly work. Below is a preliminary schedule of his activities while in Eugene.
