Home Page Franz Liszt Life He was the son of a talented amateur musician who was a steward in the service of the Esterhàzy family. Liszt was a child prodigy at the piano and, by the time he was eleven, he had performed in many parts of Europe. In 1821 he left Hungary and moved to Vienna where he studied piano with Czerny and composition with Salieri. Two years later he went with his family to Paris where he was recognised as a brilliant performer and quickly became a favourite of the wealthy French families. In 1830 he met Chopin Berlioz and the violinist Paganini , whose virtuosity inspired Liszt to explore the expressive possibilities of the piano. As a young man in Paris, Liszt was as famed for his affairs of the heart as for his piano technique. In 1835 he eloped with his mistress, the Countess Marie d'Agoult, to Switzerland and they spent the next few years in the Alps and in Italy. MIDI FILE - "Liebestraum" Soon Liszt began a vagabond life that took him to every capital in Europe where he achieved tremendous success as a pianist. In 1844 he separated from his mistress, by now the mother of his three children, and four years later he settled in Weimar, with Princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, and was appointed Court Kapellmeister.

    Franz Liszt
    About
Liszt redefined for the nineteenth century what was possible for the piano. He learned that if you played powerfully enough, beautiful women would literally pass out from the emotional exhaustion and hero worship. His sphere of influence went much further than his instrument. He devised the Symphonic Poem form, which is a sort of one movement work inspired by a non-musical subject, such as a famous person or a literary work.

When I discovered Franz Liszt had been interested enough in gypsies to become their friend, and to even spend time in a gypsy encampment in his childhood home of Hungary, I immediately became very interested in him as a man as well as a musician. On one occasion when he visited the camp, he was given a pile of fur skins as a seat of honour, and from this special vantage position he watched the men eating meat and honey, while the women danced, crashing their tambourines and shouting to each other. Then the men rose to examine several horses they had been given, and were so delighted with the animals, they threw their caps into the air with joy before taking up their violins and cymbals to play in excited celebration. I could hear, even see all this happening when I played his Hungarian Rhapsody No. 9 The series of pieces he called 'Magyar Dallock', which were later published as 'Hungarian Rhapsodies' were also based on music he had heard the gypsies play. He is said to have admired their prophetic talent, and although he found their primitive ways both erotic and barbarous, the simplicity of their life also charmed him. As a boy he was influenced by the gypsy violinist Janos Bihari, and for this reason had a rich knowledge of his country's national music to draw on. But his fascination with their music related directly to his own attraction to the colourful and unconventional.

Liszt, Franz [Ferenc] Born: Raiding, 22 Oct 1811
Died: Bayreuth, 31 July 1886
Nationality: Hungarian composer and pianist
He was taught the piano by his father and then Czerny (Vienna, 1822-3), establishing himself as a remarkable concert artist by the age of 12. In Paris he studied theory and composition with Reicha and Paer; he wrote an opera and bravura piano pieces and undertook tours in France, Switzerland and England before ill-health and religious doubt made him reassess his career. Intellectual growth came through literature, and the urge to create through hearing opera and especially Paganini, whose spectacular effects Liszt eagerly transferred to the piano in original works and operatic fantasias. Meanwhile he gave lessons and began his stormy relationship (1833-44) with the (married) Countess Marie d'Agoult. They lived in Switzerland and Italy and had three children. He gave concerts in Paris, maintaining his legendary reputation, and published some essays, but was active chiefly as a composer ("Années de pèlerinage"). To help raise funds for the Bonn Beethoven monument, he resumed the life of a travelling virtuoso (1839-47); he was adulated everywhere, from Ireland to Turkey, Portugal to Russia. In 1848 he took up a full-time conducting post at the Weimar court, where, living with the Princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, he wrote or revised most of the major works for which he is known, conducted new operas by Wagner, Berlioz and Verdi and, as the teacher of Hans von Bülow and others in the German avant-garde, became the figurehead of the "New German school." In 1861-9 he lived mainly in Rome, writing religious works (he took minor orders in 1865); from 1870 he journeyed regularly between Rome, Weimar and Budapest. He remained active as a teacher and performer to the end of his life.

FRANZ JOSEPH LISZT Born: October 22, 1811, Raiding, Hungary
Died: July 31, 1886, Bayreuth, Germany
    In his own words...
"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason...Music presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul."
Hungarian pianist, composer, and conductor. Lizst was an innovator in his piano and orchestral works, and created new approaches to form. Franz Liszt embodied all of the great ambitions of the Romantic era, and many of its contradictions. His life spanned three generations of Romantic composers. In his early life, he was an extravagant virtuoso, the darling of the ladies, and a creator of new and adventurous music. In his old age, he turned to the church, becoming a priest, writing sacred music, and championing the music of a new generation.
In 1848, Liszt abandoned his concert career to concentrate more on his composing. He took the post of court conductor to the Duke of Weimar, and it was here that he wrote or revised many of his most well-known pieces. Late in life he moved to Rome, taking minor orders there in 1865. Much of the rest of his life was taken up with composing religious music, although he kept up his career as a teacher and performer, dividing his time between Rome, Weimar, and Budapest.

The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra took the name of the great composer, who had consistently declared himself as a Hungarian. Although Franz Liszt did not compose any works for string, the Orchestra adopted his name to pay homage to the genius whose name became inseparable with the establishment of Hungarian music pedagogy, and whose spirit irrediates the musical life of the entire world. It is essential to note that Professor Frigyes Sindor, who was the artistic leader of the Orchestra until his death in 1979, played an important role in the Orchestra's development. After having studied for years together at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, the Orchestra made On its recording and concerts the Orchestra featured such world-famous solists as: M. André, M. Argerich, I. Oistrakh, J. P. Rampal, M. Rostropovich, H. Szeryng, Sir Yehudi Menuin and more recently Isaac Stern who played with them on their South-American tour in 1994 and in Spain in 1996. The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra consists of 17 strings and according to the programmes a harpsichord soloist and wind soloists can complete the Orchestra.
