(Original name, Roland de Lattre), composer, born at Mons, Hainault, Belgium , in 1520 (according to most biographers; but his epitaph gives 1532); died at Munich , 14 June, 1594. At the age of eight and a half years he was admitted as soprano to the choir of the church of St. Nicholas in his native city. He soon attracted general attention, both on account of his unusal musical talent and his beautiful voice; so much so that he was three times abducted . Twice his parents had him returned to the parental roof, but the third time they consented to allow him to take up his abode at St-Didier, the temporary residence of Ferdinand de Gonzaga, general in command of the army of Charles V and Viceroy of Sicily . At the end of the campaign in the Netherlands , Orlandus followed his patron to Milan and from there to Sicily . After the change of his voice Orlandus spent about three years at the court of the Marquess della Terza, at Naples . He next went to Rome , where he enjoyed the favour and hospitality , for about six months, of Cardinal Archbishop of Florence , who was then living there. Through the influence of this

Franco-Flemish composer. Legend holds that as a choirboy with an uncommonly beautiful voice he was thrice kidnapped from his birthplace for service elsewhere. It is not certain, however, that he was ever a chorister in Mons. His first known position was in the service of Ferrante Gonzaga, who passed through the Low Countries in 1544 on his way to Italy. Lassus spent the next decade in Italy, at first with Gonzaga, later in the service of Constantino Castrioto of Naples. By 1553 he was choirmaster at St. John Lateran in Rome, remaining there for a year, then returning to his homeland and settling briefly in Antwerp. His career from 1556 was centered in Munich at the court chapel of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria, as maestro di cappella from 1563, with duties that included some travel in Germany, Flanders, France, and Italy. While employed at Munich, he came to know both Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli , each of whom spent time in the musical establishment he directed. His accomplishments brought formal recognition from Emperor Maximilian II, the French king Charles IX, and Pope Gregory XIII. Lassus's production of over 2,000 works in nearly every Latin, French, Italian, and German vocal genre known in his time places him among the most prolific and versatile composers of the era. A close connection between text and music, in both small- and large-scale respects, is perhaps the single most prominent characteristic of his output.

LASSUS, ORLANDE DE BIOGRAPHY
Lassus, also known by the Italian form of his name, Orlando di Lasso, belonged to the Franco-Flemish school of composers whose work was of supreme international importance in the 16th century. He was born at Mons, in Hainaut, in 1532, and as a boy entered the service of a member of the Gonzaga family, hereditary dukes of Mantua. Employment elsewhere in Italy and a stay in Antwerp was followed by a position in the musical establishment of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria in Munich, where Lassus remained from 1556 until his death. With Palestrina and Vittoria, he is one of the most important composers of the period. Church Music Lassus wrote a considerable quantity of church music, including over seventy settings of the Mass, settings of the Passions from the four evangelists and a very large number of motets. From this very considerable body of work of the highest quality selection is invidious, although mention may be made of the Requiem for four voices, the Missa octavi toni and Missa Qual donna, and motets such as Tristis est anima mea and the setting of the seven penitential Psalms of David and of the Holy Week Lamentations. Secular Vocal Music The secular vocal compositions of Lassus include madrigals, in the Italian style, some 150 French chansons and a much smaller number of German Lieder, all of great interest and forming a large body of work, including settings of Petrarch and Ariosto, Ronsard and Marot, from which selection is again invidious.

Orlando di Lasso, 1532?-1594
Also known as Roland de Lassus. Born around 1532 - nobody knows exactly - in Mons, Flanders. As a boy singer in the service of the vice king of Sicily he went to Italy where he studied music. At the young age of about 20, he became maestro di cappella in Rome, which shows that he must have been highly talented. In 1556, the Duke of Bavaria contracted him as a singer. From 1564 until the end of his life, he was maestro di cappella at the court in München, where he died in 1594 as a wealthy and highly respected man. Lasso was no doubt the greatest Renaissance composer, fluent in any style of the time: Villanella, Chanson, Motet, Madrigal, Lied, Hymns, Lamentationes,... And he was fluent in French, Italian, German and Latin, too. Over 2000 secular and spiritual works have survived to this day. Many another composer would envy both his productivity and the care with which his works were kept for posterity. What I like about his music is, for one, the polyphonic Renaissance style in itself, but most of all I like its diversity: Four different languages and many more styles. There are sad songs of love, sacred music, hilarious songs about the joy of life, or satires, all put to music that characterises the content of the text in a way that can be instinctively understood. I guess that many people would be astonished to learn how funny and even indecent many of the texts are. If you want to put an ear to Lasso's music for the first time, I recommend

Died: June 14, 1594 - Munich, Germany Orlando di Lasso [Orlande de Lassus, Orlandus Lassus, Roland de Lassus, Roland Delattre, Roland de Lattre] was a Franco-Flemish composer of the late Renaissance. Along with Palestrina he is today considered to be the chief representative of the mature polyphonic style of the Netherlands school, and he was the most famous and influential musician in Europe at the end of the 16 th century. Life Orlando di Lasso was born in Mons in the province of Hainaut, in what is today Belgium. Information about his early years is scanty, although some uncorroborated stories have survived, the most famous of which is that he was kidnapped three times because of the singular beauty of his singing voice. At the age of 12 he left the Low Countries with Ferrante Gonzaga and went to Mantua, Sicily, and later Milan (from 1547 to 1549). While in Milan he made the acquaintance of the madrigalist Hoste da Reggio, an influence which was formative on his early musical style.
He then worked as a singer and a composer for Constantino Castrioto in Naples in the early 1550s, and his first works are presumed to date from this time. Next he moved to Rome, where he worked for the Archduke of Florence, who maintained a household there; and in 1553, he became maestro di cappella (chorus leader) of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano in Rome, a spectacularly prestigious post for a man only 21 years old, but he stayed there only for a year (Palestrina took this post a year later, in 1555).

rlando di Lasso (also known as Roland de Lassus and Roland Delattre, b. Mons 1532 - d Munich 1594) is considered one of the greatest polyphonists of the late Renaissance and the essence of the Flemish tradition. A widely travelled individual, his places of residence include Rome (as chorus master at St John Lateran), Antwerp, Munich (in the employ of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria) where he settled, Flanders, Frankfurt, Northern Italy, the French Court, etc. There was a suggestion that he may even have visited England which has not been substantiated. He was awarded a hereditary nobility by Emperor Maximillian II in 1570. In 1575 he employed Giovanni Gabrieli which shows his desire for innovation as much as tradition. Lassus' versatility can be seen in an enormous output which encompasses every style of the period in over 2000 compositions: Italian madrigals, German lieder, French chansons, Latin motets, two passions, offices, masses and magnificats. In 1604, his sons published 516 of his motets. His skill earned the title of "Orpheus de Belgique" and "Principe della Musica". Of the two settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah to be sung as part of the Catholic liturgy for Matins on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Saturday, the setting in five parts is a work of great mastery. In some ways this represents the development of structural devices which would later be used in opera and instrumental music.
