DAVID LANG
Artist Statement
I like to think of inventors, like Edison. Say Edison invented the light bulb and people said to him, Can you invent us something else? and time passed and he handed them another light bulb. You can't do that as an inventor. You have to come up with other things. Invention always moves forward. That's the part of the music world I want to be in. I don't want to inherit a situation unchallenged. I want to feel like I live in a world I made. When I was 9, I saw a film of one of Leonard Bernstein's Young Persons Concerts with the New York Philharmonic. It was about Shostakovich's first symphony, which he wrote at the age of 19, and I was transfixed. I thought, I have 10 years and I could do it. From then on, I wanted to be a composer. I didn't know anything about music, I didn't play an instrument, and no one in my family was artistic in any way. But after that everything I did was to become a composer. I borrowed a trumpet from a friend, that's what I started on. I got a trombone from my elementary school. In junior high, we had a real orchestra and I played all sorts of instrumentsfrench horn, tuba, cello, guitarnothing very well, but learning enough to play simple pieces. I never thought of myself as a performer. I was always restless. By the time I was 13, I had written hundreds of pieces. I'd get my friends together to play my music. I didn't reflect much on what I made, I was just happy hearing it. As I got older, I started listening to music in a different way. I realized that if I looked at the choices other composers made in their music, I could learn something about themwhat a person likes, what he's afraid of, things he's proud of. And if I looked at the choices I made in my music, I could learn about myself. Once I realized that music came directly from my own thoughts about the world, I started paying more attention to them. That's when I became a composer.

David Lang (composer)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search David Lang (born January 8 in Los Angeles California ) is an American composer. Together with Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon , Lang co-founded Bang on a Can in 1987. His first recognition came from the BMI Foundation 's Student Composer Awards in 1980 and 1981. He can be seen as a composer who challenges the status quo. He sometimes gives his concert pieces strange, and even iconoclastic titles such as Eating Living Monkeys (1985) and Bonehead (1990). His music can be in turn: comic, abrasive, soothing and it usually retains elements of conceptualism . It is also informed by modernism minimalism , and rock and can perhaps be best described by the term post-minimalism He was a major contributor to the string quartet music, performed by Kronos Quartet , in the film Requiem for a Dream In he collaborated with composers Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon, and librettist/illustrator Ben Katchor , in the composition of the "comic strip opera" The Carbon Copy Building . The production won an Obie Award for Best New American Production.

The M ystery of David Lang
The Legend Variations More of the Legend The Rest of the Story... Last Thoughts ... Bibliography The Legend:
On the afternoon of September 23, 1880, on a farm just a few miles outside of Gallatin, Tennessee, a remarkable event was witnessed by five people.
The farm was occupied by farmer David Lang and his family his wife, Emma, his two children, eight-year-old George and eleven-year-old Sarah, and their household servants. On that afternoon, the children were playing in the front yard, when Mr. and Mrs. Lang came out of their house and Mr.Lang started across the pasture toward his quarter horses.
As Lang was crossing the pasture, the horse and buggy of the family's friend, Judge August Peck, came into view on the lane in front of the house; the children stopped playing, as Peck always brought them presents when he visited. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lang saw the buggy, and Mr. Lang waved to the judge as he turned to walk back towards the house.
A moment later David Lang completely disappeared in mid-step.
Fully witnessed by his two children, his wife, Judge August Peck, and the Judge's traveling companion (the Judge's brother-in-law), David Lang had just suddenly ceased to exist; understandably, Mrs. Lang screamed. All five witnesses ran to the spot they had last seen David, but there was nothing to hide behind or under; the field contained just grass. The adults quickly searched the field to no effect. By this time, Mrs. Lang was becoming hysterical, and was taken back into the house as neighbors were called with an alarm bell. By nightfall, all the neighbors were involved in the search, and, by lantern, they checked every foot of the field, stamping their feet to try to detect any holes that David might have fallen into. Nothing was found.
