Friedrich Kuhlau
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Friedrich Kuhlau Friedrich Daniel Rudolf Kuhlau September 11 March 12 ) was a German Danish composer during the Classical and Romantic periods. Born in Germany , after losing his right eye in a street accident at the age of seven, he studied piano in Hamburg . His father, grandfather, and uncle were military oboists . Even though Kuhlau was born to a poor family, his parents managed to pay for pianoforte lessons. In 1810, he fled to Copenhagen to avoid conscription in the Napoleonic Army , which overwhelmed the many small principalities and duchies of northern Germany, and in 1813 he became a Danish citizen. Outside of several lengthy trips which he took, he resided there until his death. During his lifetime, he was known primarily as a concert pianist and composer of Danish opera , but was responsible for introducing many of Beethoven 's works, which he greatly admired, to Copenhagen audiences. Considering that his house burned down destroying all of his unpublished manuscripts, he was a prolific composer leaving more than 200 published works in most genres Beethoven, whom Kuhlau knew personally, exerted the greatest influence upon his music. Interestingly, few of Beethoven’s contemporaries showed greater understanding or ability to assimilate what he was doing than Kuhlau. Certainly with regard to form, Kuhlau was clearly able to make sense and use what Beethoven was doing in his Middle Period.

M¤rz 1832 in Lyngby.

Virum, Denmark
Edited in English by
Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
A few years before the French Revolution brought its thorough restructuring of European society in the Nineteenth Century, Friedrich Daniel Rudolph Kuhlau was born in the little town of Uelzen in North Germany, halfway between Hamburg and Hanover, on September 11, 1786. He belonged to one of many families of musicians in those days. His father, grandfather, and uncle were all military musicians (oboists), and the last-mentioned later became organist in Ålborg in Denmark. We know very little about Kuhlau's childhood and youth. The family, with three sons and two daughters, was poor, and the career of the father caused many relocations to other North German towns.
When Kuhlau was about seven years old the family settled in Lüneburg, and it was here in the beginning of 1796 that he met with an accident, a fall in the slippery street at wintertime by which he lost his right eye. The most common version of how this happened is that broken pieces from a bottle he carried with him in order to buy something for his mother came into the eye, another is that he fell while carrying the choral book to the organist of the town in whose church he was singing and whose favorite he was. During a long time in bed, a piano was placed nearby, and this promoted an interest in music that may have been there before according to the version of singing in the church and his telling his older sister Amalie that he was then copying out some beautiful, new arias for her. When asked if the accident was not a great misfortune, he answered: "No, that was good, otherwise I would not have been a musician."
