He is noted for his sweet tone and expressive phrasing. Like many great violinists of his generation, he produced a characteristic sound, which was immediately recognizable as his own. Although he was a violinist of the Franco-Belgian school, his style is nonetheless reminiscent of the gem¼tlich lifestyle of pre-war Vienna.

In 1910, Kreisler gave the premiere of Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto, a work dedicated to him. He briefly served in the Austrian Army in World War I before being honourably discharged after he was wounded. He spent the remaining years of the war in America, and lived in Berlin from 1924. He moved to France in 1938 but shortly thereafter settled in America, becoming an American citizen in 1943. He lived in that country for the rest of his life. He gave his last public concert in 1947 and broadcasted performances for a few years after that. He died in New York City in 1962. Kreisler wrote a number of pieces for the violin, some of them in the style of other composers. Many of these works were originally ascribed to earlier composers such as Gaetano Pugnani and Giuseppe Tartini until Kreisler revealed in 1935 that they were actually by him. When critics complained, Kreisler answered that critics had already deemed the compositions worthy. "The name changes, the value remains". He also wrote operettas (including Apple Blossoms (1919), a string quartet and cadenzas, including one for the Johannes Brahms Violin Concerto. His cadenza for

    KREISLER, FRITZ BIOGRAPHY
Among the most distinguished violinists of his time, Fritz Kreisler was born in Vienna and became a student at the Conservatory at the age of seven, studying with the younger Joseph Hellmesberger and later, in Paris, with Massart. His subsequent international career, interrupted briefly by diversion into medical studies and army service, consolidated his position as a leading virtuoso. As a composer he provided himself with a series of brief encore pieces, well suited to the then requirements of the recording studio. These took the form of arrangements and transcriptions as well as a more controversial series of pieces attributed to composers of the past but in fact his own composition. These too have become a standard part of violin repertoire and it seems strange, in retrospect, that anyone should have thought them anything but effective and not particularly literal pastiche. His technique in performance involved a ubiquitous vibrato, applied to fast as well as slow notes. Violin Music Kreisler made useful additions to violin repertoire in his many transcriptions, short compositions of acknowledged authorship and a series of pieces that he attributed to lesser known composers of the 18th century, but which were in fact his own work. Original compositions include the well known Liebesleid (Sorrow of Love) and its counterpart, Liebesfreud (Joy of Love), transcribed for piano by Rachmaninov, and the pastiche Praeludium and Allegro that he attributed to Pugnani.

AND DEVOTION PREFACE THIS brief record of the fighting on the Eastern front in the great war is the outcome of a fortunate meeting. The writer chanced to be dining with Mr. Kreisler soon after his arrival in this country, after his dismissal' from the hospital where he recovered from his wound. For nearly two hours he listened, thrilled and moved, to the great violinist's modest, vivid narrative of his experiences and adventures. It seemed in the highest degree desirable that the American public should have an opportunity of reading this narrative from the pen of one in whose art so many of us take a profound interest. It also was apparent that since so little of an authentic nature had been heard from the Russo-Austrian field of warfare, this story would prove an important contribution to the contemporary history of the war. After much persuasion, Mr. Kreisler reluctantly acceded to the suggestion that he write out his personal memories of the war for publication. He has completed his narrative in the midst of grave difficulties, writing it piecemeal in hotels and railway trains in the course of a concert tour through the country. It is offered by the publishers to the public with confidence that it will be found one of the most absorbing and informing narratives of the war that has yet appeared.

    Fritz Kreisler
By 1910, The Austrian Fritz Kreisler had become the leading young violin virtuoso of his day. Kreisler enjoyed an enormous, and deserved, popularity, which was reinforced by his own numerous short tuneful compositions for the instrument of which he was such a master. Many of these gems, written in pastiche styles of seventeenth or eighteenth century minor masters, were at first published by Kreisler as being by those forgotten composers; but when challenged, he had to admit that they were, in fact, his own original compositions. No-one minded the slight deception at all; the music is too good for anyone to take offence, and no harm was intended. But some of these pieces were not 'in the style of any earlier composer', including this little march, one of the very best of the lively Kreisler encores . Another of Kreisler's original pieces for violin and piano, one of a pair (the other being Liebesfreud ), is Leibesleid , which sums up the soul of old Vienna - not as a large concert-waltz in the manner of the Strauss dynasty, but as an intimate, gentle reminiscence. It is marked to be played in the style of the Austrian (or German) Ländler , an old dance in slowish 3/4 time, which many believe was the forerunner of the waltz, with which it shares certain similarities. In any event, Kreisler's delightfully languorous piece, with its evocative and dreamy ending, is a magnificent composition of its type, a perfect gem of the composer's craft. Schön Rosmarin is yet another of the wonderful short pieces for violin and piano by Kreisler: a delightful pen-portrait of Rosmarin, who is clearly a beautiful and somewhat vivacious young girl. This is a wholly endearing miniature, a sensuous and charming work of sentiment and splendid craftsmanship. 1196 Robert Matthew-Walker

    Fritz Kreisler
During the early twentieth century, Fritz Kreisler was considered to be one of the leading violinists of his time. Part of his popularity stemmed from the fact that he had rediscovered many 'lost classics' by famous composers. He explained that he had found these works tucked away in various libraries and monasteries throughout Europe.
He would play these lost classics (which included pieces by masters such as Pugnani and Vivaldi) during his concerts, much to his audiences' delight. This became a signature part of his act. And over time many of these works became quite popular in their own right and entered the repertoire of other performers besides Kreisler.
By the time he was approaching the age of 60, Kreisler could look back on a highly successful career in which he had won acclaim and accolades, even though it was acclaim for playing other people's work.
Then on February 2, 1935, his 60th birthday, the New York Times music critic Olin Downes sent him a cable wishing him a happy birthday. In the cable she jokingly asked if he himself was actually the composer of all those 'lost classics' that had made him so famous. To her shock, he casually responded that, in fact, he was.

When the concert artist was Fritz Kreisler, universally acknowledged as one of the greatest and best loved violinists of all time, the results were some of the most popular violin pieces in the world. Kreisler's output of approximately 60 original compositions, over half of which are for violin and piano, was augmented by numerous arrangements and transcriptions of works by Tartini, Corelli, Paganini, Poldini, Paderewski, Schumann, Granados, etc. The demand for his own compositions such as: Schön Rosmarin, Liebesfreud, Caprice Viennois, Liebeslied, to mention only four, was so great that Kreisler himself made arrangements for instruments other than the original setting for many of them. If he did not actually write the arrangement, he never permitted the arrangement made by anyone else to be sold unless it had his approval. All of Kreisler's music is once again back in the catalog of Carl Fischer, Inc., his original American publisher, including the two specially prepared piano settings of "Liebeslied" and "Liebesfreud", made by his long-time friend Sergei Rachmaninoff.
