Exceptional. Music. Eric Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) was one of the most fascinating figures in twentieth-century music history. At age eleven he composed a ballet that was performed with the Vienna Opera. His father, Julius, was chief music critic for Vienna's leading daily newspaper, but the father's influence was not the key to the son's success. Rather, the Wunderkind talent of Korngold was truly phenomenal. Die Tote Stadt , Korngold's most famous opera, was written when he was twenty. Korngold's attraction to the stage and the commercial success inherent in opera during the early part of the twentieth century helped to define his musical vocabulary. Like Richard Strauss, he stuck with the lush rhetoric and materials of late-nineteenth-century Romanticism. His fascination with the theater led him to work closely with Max Reinhardt, the great director, and it was through Reinhardt that Korngold first encountered Hollywood. The sound film medium was the deal successor to the operatic stage. The irony was that by 1933 the child prodigy of 1910, at age 37, had become one of the old men of European music. His work was regarded as facile, commercial, and irrelevant to the mainstream of twentieth-century modernism. When this concerto was first performed in 1946, the critic Louis Biancolli in the New York Telegram dismissed it as glib.
