Kodály Memorial Year
Dear Reader,
In all art forms we find people of exceptional abilities, whose significance go beyond that of supreme talent. Some call them great artists, others, creators or old masters. In essence, they are ones that represent the all the knowledge, character, professional skill and philosophy of the given art. Other artists measure against them, turn to them for inspiration, and care for their opinion above all.
Zoltán Kodály was born 125 years ago. Although he has not been with us for four decades, we live with his ouvre each day. His spirit is there in each music lesson, choir competition and folk dance performance. We take this treasure for granted. The purpose of the 2007 Memorial Year is to let us rediscover and esteem all that we have received from this genius. And to show this proudly to other countries in the world.

Life
Born: 16 November 1882 Died: 6 March 1967 Biography Zolt¡n Kod¡ly was a Hungarian composer, ethnomusicologist, educator, linguist and philosopher. Born in Kecskem©t, Kod¡ly spent most of his childhood in Gal¡nta and Nagyszombat (now Trnava, Slovakia). His father was a stationmaster and keen amateur musician, and Kod¡ly learned to play the violin as a child. He also sang in a cathedral choir and wrote music, despite having little formal musical education. In 1900, Kod¡ly entered University of Budapest to study modern languages, and began to study music at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, where Hans Koessler taught him composition. One of the first people to undertake the serious study of folk song, Kod¡ly became one of the most significant early figures in the field of ethnomusicology. From 1905 he visited remote villages to collect songs recording them on phonograph cylinders. In 1906 he wrote the thesis on Hungarian folk song ("Strophic Construction in Hungarian Folksong"). Around this time Kodaly met fellow composer B©la Bart³k, whom he took under his wing and became his mentor and subsequently a major influence on Bartok's music. The two became lifelong friends and champions of each other's music.

Happy new year! I just found this and had to share. As I lay down for the night by the edge of the woods,
I pull my blanket up to my chin.
I put my hands together,
Thus imploring you, my good Lord My Lord, grant me a place to stay,
Of hiding,
Of living in a foreign land My Lord, grant me a good night
Send me your blessed angel
To give strength to the dream in our hearts.
My Lord, grant me a good night

Zolt¡n Kod¡ly M U S I C:
Zolt¡n Kod¡ly, Modern Music, and the Folk Music of Hungary Sue Bagust The amalgamation of folk music and western 'art' music in the compositions of B©la Bart³k is well known. That Bart³k constructed a paradigm of musical modernism out of this amalgamation is also well known, as Bart³k became one of the 'canonised' composers of innovatory twentieth century music. However, it is often forgotten that Zolt¡n Kod¡ly, Bart³k's collaborator in folk music studies, laid a substantial foundation for modern music in Hungary and initiated much of what became the basis for a new Hungarian art music. The reasons for this loss of memory are many. Kod¡ly was a visionary who could see possibilities in every corner and 'had a finger in every pie'. Besides his work as a composer (which went on for the whole of his life with only a one year break between 1921 and 1922), Kod¡ly was active in the fields of music education, folk music research, ethnography, music history and aesthetics, music criticism, linguistics, language education and the history of literature. As a composition teacher at the Budapest Academy he trained many young composers who he hoped would help him achieve the creation of a musically cultured Hungary. Kod¡ly trained his students to make use of Hungarian folksong in their compositions, thus establishing a national style that fused the traditions of art music with the elements of Hungarian folk music. The first generation of Kod¡ly's students came into international recognition in the 1920s and include Gy¶rgy K³sa, P¡l Kadosa, Ferenc Szab³, Tibor Hars¡nyi, Geza Frid, M¡ty¡s Seiber and Mikl³s R³zsa.
