Aaron Jay Kernis
Composer-in-Residence
Aaron Jay Kernis, one of the nation's most gifted young composers, begins his third year as The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's composer-in-residence with two of his compositions receiving premieres on the SPCO's 1995-96 subscription season. Described as a composer of engaging wit and expressive lyricism, Kernis first became known to Twin Cities audiences under the leadership of SPCO Creative Chair John Adams in 1988, when the SPCO commissioned Kernis to compose a work for chamber orchestra. The 26-minute Symphony in Waves that emerged was performed in St. Paul and Chicago during the 1991-92 season to enthusiastic acclaim. In March 1994, Kernis' Still Movement with Hymn was premiered on Minnesota Public Radio's highly-acclaimed- weekly program, "Saint Paul Sunday Morning," and in November his humorous Le Quattro Stagioni Dalla Cucina Futurismo ("The Four Seasons of Futuristic Cuisine") was performed by the SPCO on its Chamber Music series and Simple Songs was featured on its Masterworks series. During his residency, Kernis is composing several works for the SPCO and is involved in the Chamber Orchestra's innovative education program, CONNECT. In the 1995-96 season, Kernis' much-anticipated "Double Concerto for Violin and Guitar," featuring Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Sharon lsbin, is given its world premiere with the SPCO. The Chamber Orchestra also presents the U.S. premiere of Kernis' acclaimed Goblin Market, which received rave reviews at its January 1995 London world premiere, with London's The Guardian calling Kernis "a remarkable composer" and the Times predicting that "Kernis should have opera managements queueing at his door with commissions."

Evelyne Luest, piano, Andrea Schultz, violin, Michael Finckel, cello, Aaron Kernis, piano, The Eberli Ensemble, Evan Spritzer, narrator Aaron Jay Kernis THE FOUR SEASONS OF FUTURIST CUISINE and other CHAMBER WORKS Aaron Jay Kernis Before Sleep and Dreams Air Meditation (In Memory of John Lennon) The Four Seasons of Futurist Cuisine Evelyne Luest, piano Before Sleep and Dreams Andrea Schultz, violin Air Michael Finckel, cello Meditation (In Memory of John Lennon) Aaron Jay Kernis, piano The Eberli Ensemble The Four Seasons of Futurist Cuisine Evan Spritzer, narrator The four works contained on this disc span a twelve year period (1981-1993) in my compositional output and represent a broad range of styles and musical concerns. Consistent in all these pieces is a deep lyricism which is supported by the contrast and flow between consonant and dissonant harmonic worlds. My early student works were especially influenced by the process-oriented Minimalism as found in the early works of Reich or Glass; as time passed, the lyricism and stylistic freedom that is so essential to my work came more to the fore, particularly as I embraced a diverse range of musical influences in the years following graduate study at Yale School of Music. In 1981 I was a student at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, living not far from where John Lennon was brutally shot and killed. I found myself deeply moved by the outpouring of grief and love that attended that tragic and unexpected event, and in homage to Lennon, I composed Meditation (in memory of John Lennon) for cello and piano, premiering it later that year at the Manhattan School with cellist Jeanne Lewin. Simple and meditative, this gently pulsing and elegaic music utilizes techniques borrowed from Minimalism to stretch the tonal harmonies and melodic shapes of Lennon's beautiful song Imagine. This piece holds the seeds of my occasional yet ongoing concern with combining elements of popular and contemporary classical music to create a fresh and invigorating synthesis, seen in later works such as New Era Dance and 100 Greatest Dance Hits.

15. Making Time - With Don Mager

Making Time
A music column by Don Mager Kernis, Aaron Jay. Second Symphony. Musica Celestis. Invisible Mosaic III.
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hugh Wolff. London: Argo Kernis's Second Symphony is a war symphony in the grand tradition of Barber, Tubin and Shostakovich , reaching even further back to Vaughn Williams and Nielsen. Through the lens of Shostakovich it also has references to Mahler particularly in its two slow movements. It is a large, by not long, three movement work, with the movements entitled I. Alarm, II. Air/Ground, III. Barricade But, Second Symphony The second and third movements are large slow panoramas, the longest is the middle one at 12 minutes. As its string textures unfold we feel that Kernis is evoking the Mahlerian Adagio, the vast essay in aching sadness, climaxing at some mid-point of excruciating dissonance, only to achieve a kind of transcendent or mystical resignation. But Kernis propels the story elsewhere and the Mahlerian solution is eschewed completely. Indeed, we move to an excruciating mid-point, but from it, we are carried even more deeply into the near despair of the movement's initial mood. Nothing is transcended, no higher grace is proffered. Kernis compels our listening minds to confront bleakly but unflinchingly the horrors of one of our civilization's determining recent historical momentsshorn of hype and simplistic morality play and patriotism. The third movement initially seems to offer a respite, a slightly lighter texture, pace and instrumental configuration. It too, however, mounts towards a devastating moment of terror and like the longer second movement searches beyond its despair to find only the consolation of having endured. The entire work ends with a hushed and very unsettling dissipation of energy. In a concert hall, I personally, would find it very difficult to bring myself right away to applaud, for reflective silence seems to be demanded by the symphony's entire architecture. Idiomatically, Kernis is well inside the symphonic tradition of the twentieth century; he breaks no syntactic, structural, timbreal nor harmonic grounds, even somewhat conservative in approach; but inside his chosen sound universe, he thinks fresh musical ideas and communicates them consummately in a work of only 27 minutes.
