It has now taken on the name of the composer Vitezslava Kapralova, who died in southwest France in June 1940 as the German army swept through France. Born in 1915, she conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London in 1938 in her prize-winning Military Sinfonietta. During the 1930s, a steady stream of composers and performers fled Nazi Germany in the wake of Hitler's Kulturkampf. Paul Hindemith, Kurt Weill, Arnold Schoenberg, Bruno Walter, Otto Klemperer and other purveyors of "degenerate art" found a safe haven in the U.S. Gentile and Jew alike, they contributed immeasurably to the development of music in America. But what of those not so lucky as to escape? What talents were consigned to the flames of the Holocaust? The fascinating and moving new CD Silenced Voices offers poignant witness to what was and what might have been. Perversely, music played an important role in the Nazi concentration camps. Loudspeakers blared Schubert, Wagner and march music, while, less officially, prisoners smuggled in instruments and put on private musicales. In "model" camps such as Theresienstadt (Terezin) in Bohemia, the inmates were even encouraged to perform for visiting Red Cross workers to show that they were being treated humanely. The late French composer Olivier Messiaen wrote one of this century's most illuminating chamber works, the Quartet for the End of Time, while incarcerated in a Silesian camp. Messiaen survived. But for most victims time was something that indeed came to an end.

International Gathering, March 23-25 U.Va. Conference Gives Voice To Music Silenced By Hitler February 16, 2001 Calling on a combination of racial doctrine, Wagnerian anti-Semitism, and their own belief of Aryan supremacy, the Third Reich sought to destroy every form of music it had branded with the term Entartete Musik (degenerate music) during the period that led to World War II. Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels worked closely to formulate a plan that would erase this music from the face of the earth. Through their efforts, a generation of musical innovation and promise was not only abruptly curtailed in Europe, but excluded from its rightful status in history. What should have been the dawning of a thrilling new phase of musical evolution, instead fell silent under the dark shadows of the swastika. The Music Suppressed by the Third Reich International Conference will feature a gathering of international scholars and musicians to lead seminars and give performances on the grounds of the University of Virginia on March 23 through 25.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Vtězslava Kapr¡lov¡ Vtězslava Kapr¡lov¡ was born on January 24 in Brno , died June 16 in Montpellier . She was a Czech composer and conductor . Among her teachers were some of the best European composers and conductors of the time - Bohuslav Martinu Vaclav Talich , and Charles M¼nch . Kapralova is regarded as one of the most promising Czech composers of her generation who was able to find her own original voice early, well before her premature death at the age of 25. Kapralova left behind over 40 compositions that include her highly regarded art songs and music for piano solo, a string quartet, a cantata, and a number of orchestral works among which the most important are two piano concertos, two orchestral suites, a sinfonietta, and a concertino for clarinet and violin. Her music was greatly admired by Rafael Kubelik who premiered her orchestral song Waving Farewell and also performed several of her other works. Among the many interpreters of her piano music was also the esteemed Rudolf Firkusny for whom Kapralova composed her best known piano work April Preludes.
