His music is very communicative and immediate and often has a spiritual quality, which leads some to compare him (not always helpfully) to composers such as Arvo P¤rt and John Tavener . There are several instances of folk and religious inspiration in his music, notably in the opening to the Third Symphony or his more recent work Magnum Ignotum, but the effect of Georgian folk elements on his style is in spirit rather than substance, should not be overemphasised. In his symphonies, his musical language typically consists of very slow, haunting scraps of minor-mode melody against long, subdued, anguished string discords, occasionally punctuated with 'battle scenes' involving martial brass and percussion. His music post-1990 has become more refined and generally more subdued and nostalgic in character. Some commentators talk about his music in cinematic terms; one can find equivalents of dissolve (in his ubiquitous blurred tonal transitions), zoom (such as the long crescendo a third of the way into the Sixth Symphony), abrupt cuts (jumping from very quiet to very loud, as in the opening of the Fifth Symphony), and so on. Renowned Georgian composer of works in all forms that have received acclaimed performances throughout the world; he has also written much film music. Mr. Kancheli had piano lessons as a child at a music school in Tbilisi and studied at the Georgian State Conservatory in Tbilisi from 1959-63, where his composition teacher was I.I. Tuskiya. His many honors include the USSR State Prize (1976, for Symphony No In Memoria di Michelangelo ’). Since 1971, he has served as Director of Music at the Rustaveli Theatre in Tbilisi, for which he has written incidental music for many productions, mostly in cooperation with director Robert Sturua. Mr. Kancheli left Georgia in 1991 (before the collapse of the Soviet Union), after receiving a grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst and stayed in Berlin until 1995. In 1995-96, he served as composer-in-residence to the Royal Flanders Philharmonic in Antwerp and has lived in Belgium since. He is noted for the strong dramatic structure of his ambitious orchestral works, many of which contain deeply spiritual themes. His richly textured music is imbued with influences from Georgian folk music, American jazz, and twentieth-century Russian composers, with musical phrasings that alternate between sparse and climactic. Along with other Sovietera composers such as Arvo P¤rt, Erkki-Sven Tuur, Alfred Schnittke, and Sophia Gubaidulina, Kancheli was determined to dramatize the oppression endured by artists under Soviet rule, while finding solace and strength in spirituality. Kancheli was born on August 10, 1935, in Tbilisi, Georgia. Originally intending to study geology at Tbilisi University, he switched to music instead, attending Tbilisi Conservatory from 1959-63 and receiving a state stipend for his academic accomplishments. In 1962 he won a prize at the All-Union Young Composers Competition, but alienated many potential supporters and angered many Soviet politicos with his acknowledged love of American jazz. Because of this, his Concerto for Orchestra received harsh criticism. He joined the Tbilisi Conservatory faculty in 1970, and was named musical director for the city's Rustaveli Theatre the following year.
