Josquin Des Pres
(?c.1440-1521)
The aspect of Josquin's art that fostered such a furor among his contemporaries was its remarkable expressivity: to a far greater extent than anyone before him Josquin attempted to convey the meanings of the words he set. For this reason his most powerful and audacious music is not to be found in his twenty-odd Masses, in which the text remains fixed, but rather in his 100 or so motets, whose texts he could select himself. It was undoubtedly brilliant strokes of this sort that moved Martin Luther to exclaim of Josquin: "He is the master of the notes. They must do as he wills; as for the other composers, they have to do as the notes will. " But there was another aspect to Josquin's personality. When the Duke Hercules d'Este I of Ferrara sought a composer for his court, his secretary recommended Heinrich Isaac over Josquin, because Isaac "is able to get on better with his colleagues and composes new pieces quicker. It is true, Josquin composes better, but he does it only when it suits him and not when it is requested. More than this, Josquin asks 200 ducats while Isaac is pleased with 120." The Duke rejected this advice and hired Josquin, who emerges as the Beethoven of his time, a man who knew his own worth and wrote what and for whom he pleased. The age of the individual was at hand.

1611 woodcut of Josquin des Prez, copied from a now-lost oil painting done during his lifetime. Josquin des Prez (c. to August 27 ), often referred to simply as Josquin , was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance . He is also known as Josquin Desprez , a French rendering of Dutch "Josken Van De Velde", diminutive of "Joseph Van De Velde", and Latinized as Josquinus Pratensis, alternatively Jodocus Pratensis. He was the most famous European composer between Guillaume Dufay and Palestrina , and is usually considered to be the central figure of the Franco-Flemish School . Josquin is widely considered by music scholars to be the first master of the high Renaissance style of polyphonic vocal music that was emerging during his lifetime. During the 16th century, Josquin gradually acquired the reputation as the greatest composer of the age, his mastery of technique and expression universally imitated and admired. Writers as diverse as Baldassare Castiglione and Martin Luther wrote about his reputation and fame; theorists such as

(c.1440 - 1521) Josquin's masses include not only cantus firmus masses, such as the widely reknowned "Missa Pange Lingua," but also "parody" masses in which entire contrapuntal complexes are borrowed from an earlier source. His secular compositions are highly varied, from light songs called "frottola," to weightier french chansons such as the widely parodied "Milles Regretz," to the motet-chanson "Deploration on the death of Ockeghem /Nimphes des bois" and its gloomy textures. However, Josquin's motets contain some of his most varied and highly respected output, and it is here that his combination of piety, technical mastery, and individual discretion makes its surest showing. The motet "Ave Maria, gratia plena" is an especially crystalized example of his style, with its strict canonic opening and subsequent structural interplay. The massive motet "Miserere mei, Deus" shows Josquin at his most expressive and expansive, while the late motet "De profundis clamavi" shows him at his most serene. In all these settings, Josquin's primary concern is with the direct expression of text, and it is this humanistic quality that set the stage for the main portion of Renaissance and Baroque music.

Josquin Lebloitte, called (surname) des Prez : A New Biography
by Guy Shaked - Dedicated To Tzipora Tischler (1931-1997) Keywords: Rene D'anjou, Ercole d'Este, Josquin, Louis XI, Louis XII, Ockeghem, Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Ascanio Sforza, Shaked Through an analysis of the various sources and research dealing with the life and art of Josquin, this new biography demonstrates various connections between the events of Josquin's life and his artistic output. The biography reveals that Josquin, throughout his life, was preoccupied in a search for better payment in exchange for his services to his patrons and this has influenced his artistic output. Furthermore it appears he was not a ready servant of the patron-composer system, which might suggest partially his relative unsuccessfulness to maintain and hold major positions in his lifetime. Josquin was born probably in France, since just before he died he declared that he was a foreigner in Conde, stating that he was from over the Eau Noire, which formed the southern border between Hainaut and France. The village Prez, which might be the surname origin, is located about seventeen kilometers south of the Eau Noire [1]. Josquin birth date is estimated to the 1450's [2], since it appears that the Josquin mentioned as an adult in the service of Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza in 1459 is a different person, for his family name in Latin is Kessalia, and he is the son of Honodius [3]. While Josquin's family name is Lebloitte (nicknamed Desprez) and his parents are Gossard and possibly Jeanne [4].

Executive summary: Master Renaissance composer Biographie Universelle . In his early youth Josquin seems to have been a member of the choir of the collegiate church at St. Quentin; when his voice changed he went (about 1455) to Ockenheim to take lessons in counterpoint; afterwards he again lived at his birthplace for some years, until Pope Sixtus IV invited him to Rome to teach his art to the musicians of Italy, where musical knowledge at that time was at a low ebb. Martin Luther Palestrina Louis XII of France to become the chief singer of the royal chapel. According to another account, he was for a time at least in the service of the Emperor Maximilian I . The date of his death has by some writers been placed as early as 1501. But this is sufficiently disproved by the fact of one of his finest compositions, , No. 118).

B ... Z JOSQUIN DES PREZ (c.1440 - 1521) Josquin Des Prez was one of the most influential and widely regarded composers in the history of Western music, so famous that he is known merely by his first name. Josquin was apparently born in the Duchy of Burgundy, in modern Belgium. He spent a large portion of his middle years in various Italian cities as a highly sought master of music, and then retired to Conde (in Northeast France) late in his life. Josquin's extended sojourns in Italy allowed him not only to spread the Northern polyphonic style there, but to pick up some of the Southern vitality noticeable in many of his secular works. However, his extended works are always marked by a subtlety and serenity characteristic of the Franco-Flemish school. Josquin's surviving musical output is very large, comprising masses, motets, and secular songs in both French and Italian. His style is marked by the technique of pervasive imitation, in which different vocal lines share material in a subtle interlocking manner. Most of his compositions are for four voices, though larger textures are not uncommon. Typically, Josquin utilizes pair-wise imitation between voices - such that the texture is divided into pairs of voices which interchange material in canon. This technique deliberately eschews the longer lines of the previous generation to concentrate on shorter motifs which lend themselves to various combinations of melody and harmony.

Even more perplexing is a modern day puzzlement. How can it be that a musician in Bach and Mozart’s company—that’s right, Bach and Mozart!—receive such short shrift on disc? Only ten of Josquin's eighteen masses have entries in the latest Schwann catalogue; the most recorded are the early Missa L’ami Baudichon and the towering final mass, Missa Pange Lingua , with five and four cds a piece. Two recent Josquin recordings on the ASV label by the immensely talented London-based Clerks’ Group make a compelling case for Josquin’s rightful place alongside Johann and Wolfgang. Each recording features a mass as its centerpiece. The first disc (CD GAU 220), released in the US in the fall of 2001, highlights the Miss a Fortuna Desperata ; the second (CD GAU 302), released last spring, features the Missa Faisant Regretz.

Josquin des Prez French-Flemish composer des Prez also spelled Desprez, , or
Main
born c. one of the greatest composers of Renaissance Europe. Hercules Dux Ferrariae, and his motet Mi se re re Odhecaton In his motets , particularly, Josquin gave free reign to his talent, expressing sorrow in poignant harmonies, employing suspension for emphasis, and taking the voices gradually into their lowest registers when the text speaks of death. Josquin used the old cantus firmus style, but he also developed the motet style that characterized the 16th century after him. His motets, as do his masses, show an approach to the modern sense of tonality. In his later works he gradually abandoned cantus firmus technique for parody and paraphrase. He also frequently used the techniques of canon and of melodic imitation. In his chansons Josquin was the principal exponent of a style new in the mid-15th century, in which the learned techniques of canon and counterpoint were applied to secular song. He abandoned the fixed forms of the rondeau and the ballade, employing freer forms of his own device. Though a few chansons are set chordally rather than polyphonically, a number of others are skilled examples of counterpoint in five or six voices, maintaining sharp rhythms, straightforwardness, and clarity of texture. Josquin Des Pres One of the great composers, beloved by Martin Luther, this composer reached the highest stature during his time. A master melodist, Josquinas he is knownis a composer to be reckoned with. "Josquin Des Pres" Josquin was one of the most eminent of musicians and the chief contrapuntist of his day. He was a pupil of the composer Ockeghem. From 1471 to 1484 he was a singer in the Sistine Chapel, and about 1488 in Ferrara. He came into eminence at the turn of the century, when he was about 50 years old. He was a brilliant composer, and one of the greatest melodists of all time. His early compositions, written before 1500, were in the old style of Dufay and Ockeghem. He probably learned much from his near contemporary Obrecht, whose music achieved a high point of the 15th century and from all these influences he evolved his own style. Burney called Josquin "the father of modern harmony." The florid counterpoint of his sacred music and the secular
