Another Ovation for Joachim (Who?)
Lebrecht Music Library, London An etching by Ferdinand Schmutzer of the Joachim Quartet, formed by the violinist Joseph Joachim.
By DAVID SCHOENBAUM Published: August 12, 2007 THE 19th century, a golden age of the violin, produced a Cooperstown of great fiddlers. But even in an age of titans, there was general agreement that two were more titanic than the others: the eminently Italian Niccolò Paganini, who died in 1840, and the definitively Central European Joseph Joachim, who died 100 years ago this Wednesday. Skip to next paragraph Lebrecht Music Library, London Paganini’s heavy-metal persona, inspired self-promotion and terrifying virtuosity made women weep and strong men faint. Lecherous, litigious and a cheapskate; equally devastated by syphilis, tuberculosis and his doctors, he died without sacraments or an official funeral. Joachim came from a different planet: Jupiter, perhaps. More than any other performer, he personified an era that understood Great Music as religion. Yet people liked as well as venerated him.

Composers Biography Languages Joseph Joachim Life Photo Gallery Home Page Joseph Joachim Life Born in the part of the world we now know as Slovakia, Joseph Joachim's immense talents as a violinist were noted at the age of six, and he made his public debut at the age of eight. That year he was sent to study in Vienna, entering the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of twelve. He was guided through a general music education by Mendelssohn , and during his first year made his Leipzig concert debut with Clara Schumann and Mendelssohn. At thirteen he took London by storm, a city he was to visit frequently in the following years. He was later to form a particular friendship with Brahms who acted as his accompanist. The benefits were mutual, Joachim advising Brahms on violin technique when he composed his Violin Concerto. Joachim's advocacy of Beethoven 's Violin Concerto was also responsible for establishing the work in the standard repertoire. Reports on his playing have at times been in conflict, though Joachim was generally regarded as one of the finest violinists of his generation. In his later years he became particularly interested in teaching, devoting much of his life from 1868 to the Hochschule in Berlin.

J Joachim’s unswerving determination to interpret music in accordance with the intentions of the composer made him an outstanding exponent of the masterworks of the violin literature. Many composers, including Dvotak, Gade, Schumann, and Brahms, wrote large-scale concertos for him, consulting with him on the solo parts. As a player of chamber music, he was unexcelled in his day; in 1869 he organized the Joachim Quartet, which attained merited celebrity in Europe. His own compositions for the violin are virtuoso pieces that still attract performers; the most famous is the Hun garian Concerto.
