(more info) Born in the part of the world we now know as Slovakia, Joseph Joachim's immense talents as a violinist were noted at the age of six, and he made his public debut at the age of eight. That year he was sent to study in Vienna, entering the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of twelve. He was guided through a general music education by Mendelssohn, and during his first year made his Leipzig concert debut with Clara Schumann and Mendelssohn. At thirteen he took London by storm, a city he was to visit frequently in the following years. He was later to form a particular friendship with Brahms who acted as his accompanist. The benefits were mutual, Joachim advising Brahms on violin technique when he composed his Violin Concerto. Joachim's advocacy of Beethoven's Violin Concerto was also responsible for establishing the work in the standard repertoire.

Joachim was orchestra leader and solo violinist to George V, king of Hanover, and head of the music school in the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. He was one of the first major virtuoso performers whose repertory included many works of other composers, past and contemporary, and not merely works of his own creation. He was a friend of Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann , whose relative musical conservatism he eventually came to support against the more “modernist” school of Liszt , with whose orchestra he had played for a time in Weimar. Brahms' violin concerto (1879) and the violin part of the double concerto (1887) were written for him. The string quartet which he founded and led from 1869 to 1907 was one of the first to bring the

Joachim, Joseph VIOLINIST, PEDAGOGUE (AUSTRIA) BORN 28 Jun 1831, Kittsee, Burgenland - DIED 15 Aug 1907, Berlin GRAVE LOCATION Berlin: Friedhof der Kaiser Wilhelm Gedächtniskirchengemeinde, Fürstenbrunnerweg 69-79 Joseph Joachim already performed as a child and started his studies at the Conservatory in Vienna in 1838. He finished his studies when he was twelve and moved on to Leipzig, where Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was his teacher. In 1849 he became concertmaster at Franz Liszt's orchestra in Weimar. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Liszt and Johannes Brahms were all close friends. Musically he slowly moved away from Liszt and towards Brahms. From 1853 until 1866 he was concertmaster in Hanover. There he met the singer Amalie Weiss, whom he married in 1863. They had six children, but his jealousy resulted in a divorce in 1884. In 1868 he became the director of the Hochschule in Berlin and in 1869 he started the Joachim-quartet, which existed until his death in 1907. From 1882 until 1887 he was conductor at the Berlin Philharmonic. He was also famous as a teacher. Joachim often travelled abroad and received many titles and awards. He was seen by many as the greatest violinist of his time and he performed many times together with Clara Schumann.

No indication of source of the materials is available. The collection was discovered in the basement of Sibley Library prior to the Library's move into its new facility in January 1989. Scope and Content The collection includes forty-two imprints of cadenzas for violin concertos published predominantly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The cadenzas are for many major works in the instrument's repertoire. The composers of the cadenzas include many first rank and historically important virtuosos of the time. The collection will be particularly useful for the historical study of violin performance practice during the late nineteenth century. Restrictions and Use There are no restrictions.
