Statement by Gaanman Joachim-Joseph Adochini
Paramount Chief of the Aluku (Boni) People

Transcribed and translated from Aluku by Dr. Kenneth Bilby [Recorded at Studio T. R. M. in Maripasoula, French Guiana, at the request of the 1992 Smithsonian Fooklife Festival curators, and forwarded to Washington, D.C.] I send cordial greetings to you [Ken Bilby]and, respectfully and humbly, to the entire United States. I also send greetings to the President of the United States and all his under-officers. Today you sent a message and asked who will govern the Aluku territory as a leaderwho will be the new Paramount Chief to govern the territory. Well, one can't go and claim such a post oneself. But the entire Aluku people have set their sights on a person they believe should speak for them today as their leader. This person is Brother Adochini; he is the one whom they have chosen as a leader. It is he who will become the Paramount Chief and oversee this territory. So I am the one who will respond to what you asked about. You asked what system of government the Aluku people have, and how I am thinking about administering the Aluku government. I am hoping to govern well, with the cooperation of all the people. For an individual cannot govern by himself. If a paramount chief is installed, then he has the village chiefs and under-officers behind him. The people of a territory in generalthose who are not chiefsalso cooperate with him in working on behalf of the community to ensure that it does not break apart and cease to exist.

      Joseph Joachim (1831 - 1907) View Discography
Born in the part of the world we now know as Slovakia, Joseph Joachim's immense talents as a violinist were noted at the age of six, and he made his public debut at the age of eight. That year he was sent to study in Vienna, entering the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of twelve. He was guided through a general music education by Mendelssohn, and during his first year made his Leipzig concert debut with Clara Schumann and Mendelssohn. At thirteen he took London by storm, a city he was to visit frequently in the following years. He was later to form a particular friendship with Brahms who acted as his accompanist. The benefits were mutual, Joachim advising Brahms on violin technique when he composed his Violin Concerto. Joachim's advocacy of Beethoven's Violin Concerto was also responsible for establishing the work in the standard repertoire. Reports on his playing have at times been in conflict, though Joachim was generally regarded as one of the finest violinists of his generation. In his later years he became particularly interested in teaching, devoting much of his life from 1868 to the Hochschule in Berlin. As a conductor he was also admired, and it was under his baton that the First Symphony by Brahms was introduced to England. As a composer he learnt much from Mendelssohn, though time prevented more than a modest catalogue of works, though he added to his opus through much of his life.

Executive summary: Virtuoso violinist, Joachim Quartet Felix Mendelssohn , after testing his musical powers, pronounced that the regular training of a music school was not needed, but recommended that he should receive a thorough general education in music from Ferdinand David and Moritz Hauptmann. In 1844 he visited England, and made his first appearance at Drury Lane Theatre, where his playing of Ernst's fantasia on Otello made a great sensation; he also played Beethoven 's concerto at a Philharmonic concert conducted by Mendelssohn. In 1847-49 and 1852 he revisited England, and after the foundation of the popular concerts in 1859, up to 1899, he played there regularly in the latter part of the season. On Franz Liszt 's invitation he accepted the post of Konzertmeister at Weimar, and was there from 1850 to 1853. This brought Joachim into close contact with the advanced school of German musicians, headed by Liszt; and he was strongly tempted to give his allegiance to what was beginning to be called the "music of the future"; but his artistic convictions forced him to separate himself from the movement, and the tact and good taste he displayed in the difficult moment of explaining his position to Liszt afford one of the finest illustrations of his character.

Joseph Joachim
Born June 28, 1831 Died August 15, 1907 in Berlin
  • Period: Romantic (1820-1869) Country: Austria
Biography
Joseph Joachim was one of the greatest violin soloists of all time, a friend of Johannes Brahms , and an interesting composer whose music, while not ranking with that of the great masters of classical music, is vivacious and enjoyable. His parents, Julius and Fanny Joachim, were of Hungarian Jewish ancestry and Joseph was the seventh of their eight children. When Joseph turned five, he was given lessons from Stanislaw Serwaczynski, a violinist who was known as the "Polish Paganini ." Young Joachim progressed so rapidly that he appeared in a double concerto by Eck with his teacher at the age of eight. That summer (1839), it was decided to send the talented boy to Vienna where he would study with Miska Hauser, then Georg Hellmesberger, and finally to Joseph B¶hm. In 1843, when Joachim, he was sent to Mendelssohn 's new conservatory in Leipzig.
