Joseph Joachim was born in Kittsee (Kopčany / K¶pcs©ny), near Bratislava and Eisenstadt , in today's Burgenland area of Austria, to Julius and Fanny Joachim, who were Hungarian Jews, as the seventh of eight children. In his family moved to Pest , where he studied violin with Stanislaus Serwaczynski, the concertmaster of the opera in Pest. (Serwaczynski later moved to Lublin, Poland, where he taught Wieniawski ). In 1839, Joachim continued his studies in Vienna (briefly with Miska Hauser and Georg Hellmesberger, Sr. ; finally —and most significantly — with Joseph B¶hm ). He was taken by his cousin, Fanny Wittgenstein (grandmother of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein ) to live and study in Leipzig , where he became a prot©g© of Felix Mendelssohn . In his first public performance in the Leipzig Gewandhaus he played the Otello Fantasy by Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst . The twelve-year-old Joachim's 1844 performance of the Beethoven violin concerto in London (under Mendelssohn's baton) was a triumph, and helped to establish that work in the repertory. Joachim remained a favorite with the English public for the rest of his career.

Joseph Joachim J oseph Joachim was born on June 28th, 1831, in Kittsee, near Pressburg (Austria-Hungary), as the son of a Jewish merchant family. He died in Berlin on August 15, 1907. In 1833, the family moved to Budapest, where the child was given his first violin lessons by the Polish concert master of the Pest Royal Opera. His talents were immediately apparent and it became clear that music was to be his future. Joachim had been a child prodigy. He showed such delight in a toy violin he received as a gift at age four that he was given lessons on the instrument, for which he revealed a precocious genius. A t the age of seven, Joachim was sent to Vienna, where he studied with Joseph Böhm, the principal teacher at the city's conservatory, and Georg Hellmesberger Senor, concertmaster of the court opera orchestra. He played in Joseph Hellmesberger's "Children's Quartett", attended the Vienna Conservatory and finished his studies at the tender age of twelve. I n 1843, when he was twelve, Joachim went to Leipzig to enroll at Felix Mendelssohn's newly opened conservatory, but Mendelssohn could find nothing to improve in his violin technique though he did oversee his general education and his training in composition with Moritz Hauptmann, and so arranged for his formal debut at a concert in which Mendelssohn also enlisted Clara Schumann and Pauline Viardot as participants, and his first appearance as orchestral soloist with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy became his mentor and role-model; he formed Joachim's artistic personality. Mendelssohn saw that his pupil was instructed not only on the violin but also in the humanities and in the art of composition.

    JOACHIM, JOSEPH BIOGRAPHY
Born in the part of the world we now know as Slovakia, Joseph Joachim's immense talents as a violinist were noted at the age of six, and he made his public debut at the age of eight. That year he was sent to study in Vienna, entering the Leipzig Conservatory at the age of twelve. He was guided through a general music education by Mendelssohn, and during his first year made his Leipzig concert debut with Clara Schumann and Mendelssohn. At thirteen he took London by storm, a city he was to visit frequently in the following years. He was later to form a particular friendship with Brahms who acted as his accompanist. The benefits were mutual, Joachim advising Brahms on violin technique when he composed his Violin Concerto. Joachim's advocacy of Beethoven's Violin Concerto was also responsible for establishing the work in the standard repertoire. Reports on his playing have at times been in conflict, though Joachim was generally regarded as one of the finest violinists of his generation. In his later years he became particularly interested in teaching, devoting much of his life from 1868 to the Hochschule in Berlin. As a conductor he was also admired, and it was under his baton that the First Symphony by Brahms was introduced to England. As a composer he learnt much from Mendelssohn, though time prevented more than a modest catalogue of works, though he added to his opus through much of his life.
