IRELAND, JOHN BIOGRAPHY
A pupil of Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, John Ireland later taught composition at the Royal College, while earning his living for many years as an organist and choirmaster. His music belongs to the 20th century English musical tradition, demonstrating some lyrical affinity with Elgar, while admitting contemporary influences from abroad into a very personal idiom. Orchestral Music Ireland's Piano Concerto and his Concertino pastorale for strings are notable works, with his once popular A London Overture. Other orchestral music includes the prelude The Forgotten Rite and the symphonic rhapsody Mai-Dun. He provided a very competent score for the film The Overlanders. Chamber Music Ireland's chamber music, well crafted as always, includes two Violin Sonatas, the second particularly worthy of attention, followed by a fine Cello Sonata. He left three Piano Trios and a Fantasy Sonata for clarinet and piano. Piano Music Ireland wrote one Piano Sonata and a Sonatina, in addition to a large number of lyrical shorter pieces, many with characteristic titles.

The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics, whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were, and ask why not. John Banville Novelist, short story writer, playwright and screenwriter, was born in Wexford on December 8, 1945. He was educated at Christian Brothers' schools and St. Peter's College in Wexford. He has worked in journalism since 1969 and was the literary editor of the Irish Times from 1988 to 1999. Banville's first book, Long Larkin, consists of nine short stories and the novella, The Possessed. Thematically, the narratives have at least two aspects in common: they feature characters who are caught in the hell of a peculiar guilt, and in each a particular persona acts as the Long Larkin figure, intruding upon human relationships and severing them. Long Larkin was a mason in an old Scottish ballad who, seeking revenge for not having been paid by Lord Wearie, forces his way into the lord's castle and kills Wearie's wife and son. The narratives are grouped with respect to the age of the principal characters - childhood, adolescence, middle age - and the area of public life. Long Lankin, above all on account of the novella (which Banville did not include in the revised edition of 1984), may have certain flaws as a result of Banville's thinking he was being sophisticated when he was not, but the book clearly marked the debut of a major writer. Doctor Copernicus (1976), Kepler (1981), The Newton Letter (1982) and Mefisto (1986) make up Banville's "scientific" tetralogy. The first two novels chart the lives of the two famous astronomers, adhering faithfully to the historical facts. But Copernicus and Kepler are no historical novels in the strict sense; the historical reconstruction is just a means to a different end. Here, as in The Newton Letter and Mefisto, the main concern is with communicating a particular idea. Kepler and Copernicus are representatives of what The Newtow Letter terms "those high cold heroes who renounced the world and human happiness to pursue the big game of the intellect." They sough to explain the world by means of unifying systems, gearing their whole lives toward that one goal.

Died: June 12, 1962 - Rock Mill, Washington, Sussex, England The English composer, John Nicholson Ireland, was born into a family of Scottish descent and some cultural distinction. His parents died soon after he had entered the Royal College of Music at the age of 14. He studied piano and organ there, and later composition under Charles Villiers Stanford.
Subsequently John Ireland became a teacher at the College himself, his pupils including Ernest John Moeran (who admired him) and Benjamin Britten (who found Ireland’s teaching of less interest). He was sub organist at Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Street, London SW1, and later became organist and choirmaster at St. Luke’s Church, Chelsea, London. Ireland frequently visited the Channel Islands and was inspired by their landscape; he was evacuated from them just before the German invasion during World War II. Ireland retired in 1953, settling at the small hamlet of Rock in Sussex for the rest of his life. He is buried in nearby Shipley churchyard.
From Stanford, John Ireland inherited a thorough knowledge of the music of Beethoven

    John Ireland
First archbishop of St. Paul, Minn. Born Burnchurch, County Kilkenny, Ireland, exact date unknown, baptismal date Sept. 11, 1838. Died St. Paul, Sept. 25, 1918. [ info web on grave site
    Early Career
His parents, Richard and Judith (Naughton) Ireland, immigrated with their six children to the U.S. (1848), settling in Burlington, Vt. In 1851 they moved to Chicago, Ill., and a year later to the frontier town of St. Paul, Minnesota Territory.
In 1867 Ireland was appointed rector of St. Paul's Cathedral. He represented Bishop Grace at Vatican Council I (1869?70), although he could neither speak nor vote at the Council sessions. When Pius IX named Ireland titular bishop of Maronea and vicar apostolic of Nebraska (April 12, 1875), Grace went immediately to Rome and successfully petitioned the pope to revoke the appointment so that Ireland might continue to work for the Church in Minnesota. Later the same year, Pius IX confirmed Ireland's titular bishopric and appointed him coadjutor, with the right of succession, to the bishop of St. Paul; Ireland was consecrated by Grace on Dec. 21, 1875.

39. Thirtyframesasecond: Once (2006, Ireland, John Carney)
Once (2006, ireland, john Carney). How does a romantic comedy that cost approximately £70000 to film make $10 million and counting at the US box office?

Once (2006, Ireland, John Carney)
Their musical collaboration mirrors their budding relationship, though they both have problems of the heart that get in the way. He's considering moving to England to win back his ex-girlfriend, whilst she has a husband back in the Czech Republic. When he asks whether she still loves him, she replies in unsubtitled Czech, though we instinctively know what she says. Still, Carney refuses to make the path of true love simple and doesn't rely on the kind of contrived slush that most films of the genre would fall back upon.
Much of Once's appeal depends on whether you love the music or not, which kind of falls into the kind of coffee table folk practiced by the likes of Damien Rice, though not quite as bland. It's not normally my thing, but works in context really well, but it might understandably be a hurdle for some. Still, the film was done wonders for the profile of The Frames, even drawing the attention of Bob Dylan who offered them a support slot on his latest tour. Some cynics see this as nothing more than a promo for the band. I don't know about that. There's certainly a sense of something about this film; maybe it's the fact that a no-budget film has succeeded in the US, maybe it's the fact that music is a core part of the film and not window dressing - that it actually drives the narrative, but moreover it works on an emotional level for me, which few, if any contemporary romantic comedies ever could.

  • ARCHBISHOP OF SAINT PAUL
    Social Gospel.
John Ireland, the first archbishop of Saint Paul, Minnesota, was very much a man of his times, and in regard to the Catholic Church, perhaps a man of the future. Along with James Cardinal Gibbons, John L. Spalding, John Keane, and Denis O'Connell, Ireland was instrumental in bringing the Catholic Church to prominence as a political as well as a social force in the United States. Ireland was frank, energetic, progressive, and controversial not only within the church in America but within the church worldwide. The Vatican paid attention to John Ireland, who insisted that his faith not only adapt itself to this new land but also to the times. He was interested in what the church was, its ancient rites and stature, but also interested in what it could do. "Church and age!" he proclaimed. The age was one of social concerns, and Ireland confronted them despite the controversy involved in... [The entire page is 1290 words long]
