John Ireland
John Ireland has a considerable reputation as a composer of chamber music, songs and piano works areas in which he was undeniably prolific but at the expense of the popularity of some marvellous orchestral works, the London Overture and the beautiful Piano Concerto: amongst works which receive so little concert exposure. Essentially, it was in the chamber music writing that Ireland found his characteristic and indeed mature voice. Born near Manchester, Ireland spent most of his life in London with interludes in both Sussex and the Channel Islands. He was a pupil of Stanford at the Royal College of Music and, for most of his life, retained teaching connections with the institution: EJ Moeran, Britten and Geoffrey Bush all being amongst his more illustrious pupils. He remained Organist at the church of St. Luke's, Chelsea for 22 years living for virtually all his London years nearby at his Gunter Grove studio. It was Moeran who found him '..a wise adviser and an astute critic... a firm believer in the value of the study of strict counterpoint.' Contemporary influences found in his music can be discerned in the 2nd Violin Sonata of 1917 - a piece with which Ireland gained overnight fame with its first performance - from the dreamy impressionism of Debussy and Ravel, the intensity and strictness of Stanford's Brahmsian inspired counterpoint or the folksong originality; but one has only to listen to the sensuous beauty of the melodic writing, the crafted development of harmonic intention - quintessentially English but - the inspired work of a composer possessed of consummate tools of his trade?

    maritime historian
    The Marine Times

De Courcy Ireland , John maritime historian, sailor, teacher, peace activist, humanist and linguist, was born on 19 October 1911 in Lucknow (Lakhnau), the capital city of the province of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. He was born to an Irish Catholic mother and an Irish Anglican father from County Kildare, who was serving the British Army. His father died of typhoid in China on the eve of the First World War, just three years after John was born. De Courcy Ireland was educated at Marlborough High School in London, but spent much of his childhood with his grandparents in Galway, Ireland, developing a lasting attachment to the country. Despite receiving a history scholarship to New College, Oxford, shortly before his seventeenth birthday, he decided to travel to Brittany, France, to work on a Dutch merchant ship. De Courcy Ireland’s travels and travails on this ship bound for Argentina also took him to Spain, Brazil and Uruguay, among other destinations, instilling in him a lifelong interest in maritime affairs. The young man was said to have been ‘deeply distressed’ by the poverty and inequalities of wealth that he witnessed in Brazil (

John Birmingham - Astronomer ~ Milltown John Birmingham (1816-1884)
John Birmingham, amateur geologist and astronomer was born, lived and died in Millbrook, County Galway. He was educated at St. Jarlath's College in Tuam. He is reputed to have spent 6 or 7 years studying in Berlin, travelling widely in Europe and becoming proficient in several languages. He is noted for his discovery in 1866 of the recurrent nova T Coronae Borealis.
He grew up in a two-storey house on the 250-acre Millbrook estate in Milltown. He became known as a kindly landlord but also as a scholar and intellectual. At Millbrook, he built what the Tuam Herald called a large wooden house with a sliding roof. Here he mounted his telescope which cost £120 and was one of the most powerful in Ireland or Britain.
Birmingham Lunar Crater is located near the northern limb of the Moon, and so is viewed from the Earth at a low angle. All that survives of the original formation is an irregular perimeter of low, indented ridges surrounding the lava-resurfaced interior. The inner floor is marked by several tiny craterlets, and the surface is unusually rough for a walled plain. The low angle of illumination allows fine details of this boulder-strewn field to be seen more clearly. The Birmingham formation lies just to the north of the Mare Frigoris, and to the east of the W. Bond walled-plain.

    BYNUM OUT EIGHT WEEKSMINIMUM
Greetings from Seattle, where we just found out that Andrew Bynum's left knee sprain will keep him out for a minimum of eight weeks.
This is obviously terrible timing, considering that the Lakers have won 16 of their last 19 games, and start a stretch later this week that includes games against five straight playoff teams from a year ago: Phoenix, Denver, San Antonio, Dallas, and Cleveland.  After that, the Lakers go out on their longest road trip in decadesnine games over 15 days.  Bynum will miss all of it.
But this could have been worse, much worse.  When he first grabbed his knee, I was sitting about 20 feet to his right.  I said to somebody that I had never seen a guy go down like that and not be out for at least two months.  In almost every case, that player needed surgery and was out for the season.  When I heard eight weeks, I was relieved.
Now let's face the music: I just checked a poll we're running on our website, and 77% of the respondents felt that if Bynum missed an extended period of time, the Lakers season was done.  If he misses exactly eight weeks, he'll miss 27 games.
