Engelbert Humperdinck is one of Britain's most successful entertainers. He is known as the King of Romance and has been at the top of the showbusiness ladder for nearly forty years - selling more than 130 million records including 64 gold and 23 platinum albums.  He was born Arnold George (Gerry) Dorsey in 1936 in India and was one of ten children.  At the age of 10 his family returned to the UK and Leicester. At 17 he began performing in  clubs and pubs. In 1965 his manager changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck but it was still two years before his chance arrived. His big break came in April 1967 when Dickie Valentine was ill and Engelbert took his slot on the show Sunday Night at the London Palladium . His single Release Me   flew off the shelves staying in the charts for 56 weeks. He went off to conquer America and there he shared the bill with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra while he counted Elvis Presley as a close friend.

Engelbert Humperdinck Born in Madras, India in 1936, Arnold George Dorsey and his family, which included nine brothers and sisters, moved to England in 1947. His father served in the British military, and his mother taught violin and had an operatic voice. They all lived in Leicester, England and as a young lad, Arnold developed strong and enduring family values imparted by his parents. At the age of eleven, he began to study saxophone. When he was seventeen, Arnold found himself playing at a pub that sponsored a singing contest. Goaded by his friends to enter, he put down his sax and for the first time revealed another vocal talent: impersonations. He gave a fine impression of Jerry Lewis and was quickly dubbed "Gerry" Dorsey by his friends. It became his professional stage name and he never picked up the sax again. Gerry was very popular on the UK music circuit until he contracted tuberculosis, which silenced him for six months and nearly snuffed out his rising star. Many people assumed his career was finished. Upon regaining his health, he knew he had to bury his old, somewhat tainted image to make a comeback as a strong, dynamic performer. Meeting his old flat mate, Gordon Mills in 1965 led to a change of direction, career and name. Mills was a clever manager and promoter who knew that a performer had to call attention to himself in any way possible. His idea for Gerry was to change his name to something that people would remember. He convinced Gerry that an audience would never forget the name "Engelbert Humperdinck", the name of the Austrian composer who wrote "Hansel and Gretel".

Z Engelbert Humperdinck (Composer, Arranger) Born: September 1, 1854 - Siegburg, in the Rhine provinces, Germany Died: September 27, 1921 - The German composer, Engelbert Humperdinck, produced his first composition after receiving piano lessons when he was only 7. His first attempts at works for the stage were two Singspiele when he was 13. His parents did not approve of his becoming a musician, so despite them encouraging him to study architecture, he took music classes at the Cologne Conservatory, which he entered in 1872 under Ferdinand Hiller. In 1876 he won a scholarship which enabled him to go to Munich, where he studied with Franz Paul Lachner and later with Josef Rheinberger . He won the Mendelssohn Stiftung (foundation) of Berlin in 1879, and went to Italy, and became acquainted with Richard Wagner in Naples. Wagner invited him to go to Bayreuth, and during 1880-1881 Humperdinck assisted in the production of Parsifal . Having won another prize, however, he went again to Southern Europe, traveling through Italy, France and Spain, spending two years in Barcelona teaching at the conservatoire. In 1887 he returned to Cologne, and was appointed professor at the Hoch Conservatory (Frankfurt-am-Main) in 1890, and also teacher of harmony at Stockhausen's Vocal School. By this time he had composed several works for chorus and a Humoreske for orchestra, which enjoyed a vogue in Germany.

The 'Humpster', as Engelbert Humperdinck is affectionately known, had just returned from a punishing schedule of benefit concerts in the Far East in aid of the Tsunami Appeal when our interview team arrived. He was busy preparing to jet off once again to the States for yet another season of sell-out performances, so it was a real honour for us to be afforded some of his precious time at home for this rare interview. Our visit also coincided with the happy outcome of what had been a traumatic few days for Engelbert and his wife, Patricia, when they were finally reunited with their German Shepherd puppy, Charnie. The family pet had escaped from the grounds of the mansion and Charnie's disappearance was the subject of nationwide press and TV coverage. Fortunately for the Humperdincks, media attention had helped to locate the hapless hound and the ecstatic couple were relieved that it hadn't been stolen or 'dognapped', as one of the tabloids had suggested!

Engelbert Humperdinck The British crooner who originally performed under the name Gerry Dorsey didn't become a star until after he began calling himself Engelbert Humperdinck (after the 19th-century classical composer who wrote the opera HANSEL AND GRETEL). Throughout the 1960s and '70s, the younger Humperdinck's manly baritone, photogenic, leading-man image, and romantic balladry made him a bona fide pop star. He scored numerous hits, mostly with grand-scale love ballads such as "Release Me" and "A Man Without Love." And unlike many of his contemporaries his voice became richer with age, and his style more soulful, so that he earned a Grammy nomination for his 2003 gospel album ALWAYS HEAR THE HARMONY. As the butt of innumerable grade-school jokes and generally considered the cheesiest of all pop music cheese-brokers, Engelbert Humperdinck's incredible, seemingly unstoppable popularity among women of a certain, uh, advanced age is something of a marvel. It could be the rough-hewn looks and tight pants but more likely what draws the crowds is Humperdinck's singular voice and natural talent for performing. With a vocal range perfectly suited to his material (the best of which has always been slicked-up versions of country ballads), this velvet-tonsiled Big and Tall preferred customer is well aware of his kitsch status, and he embraces it con gusto, paradoxically making him one of the more unaffected performers in the MOR milieu. Laugh all you want, but Humperdinck has been selling out concerts for some thirty years now and his fan club is the largest in the world, topping them all with a staggering eight million registered members. As they say, eight million fans can't be wrong.
