HUMMEL, JOHANN NEPOMUK BIOGRAPHY
Orchestral Music Recent recordings and performances have revived some interest in two of Hummel's half dozen or so piano concertos, Op. 85 and Op. 89. His Trumpet Concerto is a useful part of current repertoire. Chamber Music Hummel's Op. 87 Piano Quintet has particular interest in that it is scored for the same instruments as the famous Trout Quintet of Schubert, with which it is sometimes coupled in recording. Both quintets are scored for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass.

Died: October 17, 1837, Weimar, Thuringia (Germany) Austrian composer and outstanding virtuoso pianist during the period of transition from Classical to Romantic musical styles. Hummel's most important compositions are his piano works, consisting of trios, sonatas, rondos, and six concerti, all elegant in style and virtuosic in their melodic writing and ornamentation. Fluent, clear in texture, and well-suited to the light Viennese piano action of his day, these works nevertheless lack the emotional depth and coherence evident in the works of Hummel's great contemporary rival, Ludwig van Beethoven. Hummel also composed nine operas, three masses, a mandolin concerto, and chamber works, notably the Septet in D Minor. He made innovations in fingering methods, published in his Klavierschule ("Piano School") in 1828. His Concerto a tromba principale is often performed and recorded by todays classical trumpet artists. Links: o.j.

JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL (1778 - 1837)
J ohann Nepomuk Hummel was born in Pressburg (Bratislava) on November 14th 1778. His father was a musician and Johann was a remarkable child prodigy. At the age of six, he mastered the violin and keyboard. The family moved to Vienna ni 1785, when father Johannes was appointed music director at the Freyhaustheater.
I n Vienna Johann was soon introduced to Mozart who accepted him as a pupil. And so the young boy moved in with the Mozart family. This arrangement probably lasted through the years 1786-8.
I n December 1788, Johann and his father embarked on a four year concert tour, including a two year stay in London. Back in Vienna, Johann completed his studies with Albrechtsberger, Salieri and Josef Haydn. In 1804, Haydn secured Johann the post of Konzertmeister to his own employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy in Eisenstadt.
H ummel moved back to Vienna in 1811. In 1813 he married the singer Elisabeth Röckel, with whom he had two sons. In 1816 he was appointed Kapellmeister in Stuttgart and in 1819 ducal Kapellmeister in Weimer. A position which allowed him time for concert tours to Russian, Poland, England, France and the Netherlands.
H e was not just a celebrated pianovirtuoso (Goethe said about him 'Hummel handles the piano the way Napoleon handles the world'), he was also a high-paid teacher. His pupils included Adolf Henselt, Ferdinand Hiller and Sigismund Thalberg.

The move from the Classical to the Romantic period in music can be seen in the transition of his own music. Hummel was born in Pressburg in what was then Hungary on November 14, 1778. His father was the director of the Imperial School of Military Music and conducted the Theater Orchestra. Mozart offered Hummel piano lessons at age seven while he was in Vienna because the legendary composer was so impressed by his ability. Mozart taught Hummel for two years free of charge and debuted him at one of his own concerts when the boy was just nine years old. After his piano performance debut, Hummel's father took him on tour throughout Europe, eventually landing in London to study with renowned keyboardist Muzio Clementi for four years before he went back to Vienna. Joseph Haydn, in London at the same time as Hummel composed a piano sonata for him in 1791 and gave it to him to premiere, offering him a financial reward for his outstanding performance. In 1804, Hummel became Kapellmeister at Eisenstadt, replacing Haydn. He remained in this position for seven years before being fired for not fully completing his responsibilities. After he lost this job, he toured Russia and Europe until returning to Stuttgart and Weimar where he again held the position of Kapellmeister, musical director.
