Howells was born in Lydney Gloucestershire , and was the youngest of six children born to Oliver and Elizabeth Howells. His father was an amateur organist , and Herbert himself showed early musical promise. He studied first with Herbert Brewer at Gloucester Cathedral , as an articled pupil alongside Ivor Novello and Ivor Gurney , the celebrated English songwriter and poet, with whom he became great friends. A September 1910 concert in Gloucester Cathedral included the premiere of a mysterious new work by the yet little-known Ralph Vaughan Williams . Howells not only made the composer's personal acquaintance that evening, but (as he often recounted) the piece, the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis , profoundly moved him. Later he studied at the Royal College of Music (RCM) under C.V. Stanford Hubert Parry and Charles Wood In 1915 he was diagnosed with Graves' disease and given six months to live. Since doctors believed that it was worth taking a chance on a previously untested treatment, he became the first person in the country to receive radium treatment. He was briefly assistant organist at

Herbert Howells
Herbert Howells taught composition at the Royal College of Music which has a distinguished tradition of composer-teachers going back to Parry and Stanford , both of whom joined the institution when it opened in 1883. Howells was also associated with the University of London. He was appointed King Edward VII Professor, a somewhat anomalous position, since the University did not have a music faculty. When his successor Thurston Dart set one up at King's College in 1964, he met with considerable opposition from the music colleges, who had little awareness of and sympathy for current concepts of musicology. In an interview with Christopher Palmer, Howells states that one of the two revelatory musical experiences of his youth was hearing the premiere of the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis in Gloucester Cathedral in 1910, the excitement of the performance being magnified by the coincidence that, after leaving the rostrum, Vaughan Williams happened to sit next to Howells and the two of them followed the same score through the subsequent performance of The Dream of Gerontius. (How rarely do people follow scores in performances now!). Both were Gloucestershire men, though from opposite sides of the county. Howells came from Lydney on the Welsh side of the Severn, Vaughan Williams from Down Ampney (between Cirencester and Swindon). Their musical tastes were very similar; the English folk idiom is less overt in Howells, but both were influenced by music of the sixteenth century, which in Howells' case led to a contrapuntal approach to music. Howells contrasted the blocks of sound typical of the music of Delius, whom he admired for his mastery of flow and continuity, with his own manner; 'I think polyphonically, in lines'.

HOWELLS, HERBERT BIOGRAPHY
Herbert Howells started his musical career as a cathedral organist. He succeeded Gustav Holst as director of music at St Paul's Girls' School in London and taught composition for many years at the Royal College of Music. A pupil of Stanford and Charles Wood at the Royal College, he wrote music within the prevailing English tradition, showing some affinity with Vaughan Williams in his choral music. Orchestral Music The orchestral music of Howells includes two Piano Concertos, a Pastoral Rhapsody and, in 1949, Music for a Prince. The Concerto for Strings of 1939 was followed by a Suite, also for string orchestra. Chamber Music Howells wrote an interesting Phantasy Quartet and a later String Quartet 'In Gloucestershire'. Among other compositions for instrumental ensemble are a Rhapsody Quintet for clarinet and string quartet, sonatas for oboe and for clarinet and piano, and three Violin Sonatas. Organ Music As an organist by training, Howells added significantly to the repertoire of English organ music, notably in two Organ Sonatas, four organ Rhapsodies and sets of Psalm Preludes.

In 1915 Herbert Howells was diagnosed with Graves' disease and given six months to live. Since doctors believed that it was worth taking a chance on a previously untested treatment, he became the first person in the country to receive radium treatment. He was briefly assistant organist at Salisbury Cathedral in 1917, though his severe illness cut this appointment short; he later served as acting organist of St John's College, Cambridge during World War II.
In his 1920's and 1930's Herbert Howells' compositional output focussed chiefly on orchestral and chamber music, including two piano concertos. The hostile reception given to the second of these in 1925 largely silenced Howells' compositional activities for almost ten years. A further blow came with the death of his son, Michael, from polio (or meningitis; accounts vary) in 1935, which deeply affected Howells. It did, however, appear to unleash a new period of creativity. Both Howells himself and his music were never the same after this period of his life. Though not an orthodox Christian, he became increasingly identified with the composition of religious music, most notably the

If you have seen the morning sun rising through the Crécy window in Gloucester Cathedral, you will know something of what it is to accompany the Gloria of the Collegium Regale Evening Canticles on a fine organ in a great and resonant building. Herbert Howells was captivated by what he called "the immemorial sound of voices"; he revered the musical tradition of the English organ-loft; he called the Crécy window "a pillar of fire in my imagination". If you have seen the last rays of sunlight quenched by the chilling, towering blackness of an approaching storm, only to blaze down an hour later on glistening tiles and pavements, you will know how so much of his choral music covers the whole emotional gam - ut from agony to ecstasy, brilliance to deepest darkness. In the words of his biographer, the late Christopher Palmer "so often, for Howells, the agony

INTRODUCTION
"Take him, earth, for cherishing. To thy tender breast receive him. Body of a man I bring thee, noble even in its ruin" (Take 2-3) . These words of the poet Prudentius could have been as apt a commitment of Herbert Howells as of John F. Kennedy, for whom Howells set them. Howells was, by any standard, a noble man, with no quest for greatness, but a love for music and for God.
Herbert Howells has not yet achieved the recognition he deserves for his vast contribution to the music world. This becomes apparent when considering the breadth of his output. In addition to the orchestral, chamber, and solo instrumental works, he composed masses, requiems, service music, hymns, anthems, motets, chants, cantatas and part songs (Hodgson 233-242) . His compositions date from 1908 to 1978, a span of 70 years!
