His music is accessible to the lay listener and often evokes a mood of mystery or contemplation. The Boston Globe music critic Richard Buell wrote: "Although he has been stereotyped as a self-consciously Armenian composer (rather as Ernest Bloch is seen as a Jewish composer), his output assimilates the music of many cultures. What may be most American about all of it is the way it turns its materials into a kind of exoticism. The atmosphere is hushed, reverential, mystical, nostalgic." He was among the most prolific composers of the 20th century, composing 67 symphonies and 434 opus numbers.

A composer for our time.
Alan Hovhaness is a highly prolific composer, with 65 symphonies at the last count and Opus numbers in the 400s, He is well worth investigating. Having arrived at a similar crisis point in his work as Arvo Part, John Tavener and Henryck Gorecki, except much earlier in 1940, his works bear comparison but are richer, with a more inclusive orchestral brush, and more spiritually poetic.
As an introduction, try his 'Fra Angelico' or his ever-popular Symphony No.2 'Mysterious Mountain' - only make sure that it's the (sublime - if liberal) version conducted by Reiner Other popular and accessible works are his coupling of Symphony No. 50 'Mount Saint Helens' with Symphony No 22 'City of Light'.
Hovhaness' music is always positive, uplifting, ennobling and spiritually nourishing. He often introduces unusual meters whilst his music is largely modal and always tonal. Nevertheless, within these self-imposed boundaries he allows himself tremendous creative freedom. To give some idea of what his music sounds like one could say that the harmonies of some of his music from the 1970s onwards bears a superficial resemblance to that of the English composer Vaughan-Williams.
Much has been rightly made of the mixed heritage of Alan Hovhaness. The combination of an Armenian father and Scottish mother acted as converging cultural streams that shaped the composer's compelling hybrid compositional style. Attending concerts of Indian classical music in Boston during 1936 also played its part. These performances triggered his interest in various types of Eastern music, many of which had a tremendous effect on him. Some of these musical forms have found expression in certain of his works. His is a unique voice that uniquely combines the accents and inflections of East and West, and of times ancient and modern. Weaving through this quietly powerful blending of cultures is a deep and poetically reverent love for nature as Spirit manifest. He certainly created a truly unique and wonderfully beautiful bridge between the musics of East and West on our little planet. His musical career is most often broken down into four stylistic periods.

Alan Hovhaness wrote more than 400 pieces, including at least nine operas, two ballets, more than 60 symphonies, and more than 100 chamber pieces. He melded Western and Asian musical styles to create a unique melodic blend of his own. Born Alan Vaness Chamakjian, in Somerville, Mass., in 1911, he demonstrated musical precociousness at an early age. When the family moved to the Boston area, he began studying piano with Adelaide Proctor and later took instruction from Heinrich Gebhard. His early compositions were thoroughly Western. However, the influences of Eastern musical styles became more evident after he attended Bohuslav Martinu's master class in composition in 1942 at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood. Alan Hovhaness died June 21, in Seattle, at the age of 89.

Alan Hovhaness 'My purpose is to create music, not for snobs, but for all people, music which is beautiful and healing'
An important 20th Century American composer whose music anticipated many future musical trends and aesthetic values. Rejecting the vogues of Americana, serialism and atonality, he pioneered contemporary development of archaic models and was amongst the earliest to integrate Western musical idioms with Eastern ones, making him a pioneer of East-West 'fusion' decades before the term 'World Music' had been coined. Introduced 'ad libitum' or aleatoric counterpoint from 1944, almost two decades before the European avant garde. From the 1940s, his employment of incantatory melodies over static harmonies, plus use of rhythmic cycles, presaged the Minimalist vogue of the 1960s/70s. The visionary and mystical nature of his work, often intoxicating in its directness and simplicity, rank him as the musical progenitor to the later, so-called New Age-ists and Spiritual Minimalists, such as Arvo Pärt and John Tavener His significance remains overlooked by musical academia, partly due to his aloofness from the establishment, and also because scholars have not looked for radical developments in post-War music which is broadly tonal and deliberately appealing.

Hovhaness is said to have begun composing aged four; then studied with Frederick Converse at New England Conservatory and with In the United States, at least, Hovhaness has generally been considered a popular composer; although in most other territories, his music is usually only available in recorded form. As more of his music becomes available on disc, it can only be hoped that non-American ensembles will be more willing to take on the subtle challenges of his music. ~

    HOVHANESS, ALAN BIOGRAPHY
Alan Hovhaness is one of Americas most idiosyncratic musical pioneers who sought a musical reconciliation between East and West, spiritual and mundane, long before it was fashionable to do so.
Born near Boston, Massachusetts to an Armenian father and a mother of Scottish ancestry, his upbringing was more or less conventionally American. As a boy he composed in secret, once remarking "My family thought writing music was abnormal, so they would confiscate my music if they caught me in the act." An early musical mentor and personal friend was Sibelius, from whom Hovhaness perhaps acquired his love of long lyrical melodies.
The composers receptivity to Armenian culture was reignited around 1940 when he became organist at Bostons Armenian cathedral. Here he was exposed to early liturgical Armenian music as well as the works of the composer-priest Komitas Vartabed. From 1944 began a series of works with Armenian titles or subject matter. Essentially comprising Hovhaness's Armenian period', these bold works have huge monodic melodies over static drones somewhat foreshadowing the Minimalists of the late 1960s. Hovhaness himself described this music as giant melodies in simple and complex modes around stationery or movable tonal centres". From 1944 too, he introduced his spirit murmur, where musical phrases are repeated over and over by each player independently to produce a buzzing textural blur. This so called

[For a full list, see this page on my personal website.] Some are very well known to both the specialist and the general public. Others are major figures within a select circle of aficionados, and some, though important to the art, remain almost completely unknown outside their own community of friends and students. Alan Hovhaness is one of the most special, and it's comforting to be able to say that his name and music are gaining more and more friends all the time. He was always known among anyone who ever heard his music, for it's experience will resonate within the heart and mind. A couple of major works, such as Mysterious Mountain and the startlingly wonderful And God Created Great Whales were presented in major places early on, and achieved recordings that never fail to surprise and delight - and win new converts to his very personal sound world. These days, performances and recordings are happening more and more, so new generations are able to enter and fall under his spell. Rather than place an extended biography here, visit the
