Gustav Holst
born Sept. 21, 1874, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Eng.
died May 25, 1934, London
British composer. The son of an organist, he studied at the Royal College of Music. There he met Ralph Vaughan Williams , who became a friend for life. He made his living first by playing trombone, then as a teacher. Always frail, after a collapse in 1923 he gave up teaching to devote the rest of his life to composition. His most popular piece is the vividly orchestrated suite The Planets (1916); other works include the charming St. Paul's Suite for strings (1913), the Hymn of Jesus (1917), and the Choral Fantasia document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "Gustav Holst" from Britannica Concise Bliss, Sir Arthur (Edward Drummond) - British composer. More on "Gustav Holst" from the 32 Volume Holst, Gustav (Theodore) - English composer and music teacher noted for the excellence of his orchestration. His music combines an international flavour based on the styles of Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky, and others with a continuation of English Romanticism. Bliss, Sir Arthur

Sometimes the New Year is a time to look back; a time to go back to things like the music blog that you haven’t posted on for months. As usual, I don’t have anything new to share with you (mostly because I haven’t had any way to get music for about 4 months and I’ll be damned if I’m going to go and pay for a cd at this point), so I’m going to go back. 17 days ago in Food Authority: 2

Imogen Holst (1907-1984), the only child of Gustav Holst, was a composer and arranger of folksongs, writer on music, conductor, and administrator. She also acted as music assistant to Benjamin Britten, of whom she became a friend and close associate. She subsequently continued as Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival until 1977, when she retired to devote more time to preparing a thematic catalogue of her father's music. Gustav Holst: The Planets Suite
    by Bryan Trussler
Music derived from astrology is surprisingly rare. The ancient Greek philosophers, whatever their intellectual attitudes towards astrology may have been, were certainly not ignorant of astrological teachings and ideas. It was they, after all, who put forward the idea of the "Music of the Spheres", the idea that these vast objects, twirling and whirling about through space, must have hummed a tone as they went along their courses, much as a ball spun on a string will whistle. They knew of seven planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Not surprisingly, Western music evolved with seven-tone scales. Music and astrology come together again in this suite devoted to the seven planets, though the luminaries of Sun and Moon are displaced by Uranus and Neptune. Gustav Holst (18741934) was well-acquainted with astrology and mythology, as well as the Greek idea of the Music of the Spheres, and he drew heavily on this knowledge in his composition of the Planets Suite . It was first performed in the autumn of 1918. Here we present excerpts of Holst's famous Planets Suite as MIDI files (in *.mid format), available for downloading, together with brief summaries of their qualities. Their traditional order in performance is: Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. There is no piece for Pluto because this planet was not discovered until 1930, whereas Holst was busy composing this suite almost twenty years before.

    HOLST, GUSTAV BIOGRAPHY
Gustav Holst, of Scandinavian ancestry on his father's side, was born in the English spa town of Cheltenham in 1874 and studied music at the Royal College in London, using his second study, the trombone, to provide an income. He later became director of music at St. Paul's Girls' School, retaining this connection until the end of his life. His music had a variable reception in his life-time, but he exercised a strong influence on later English composers. Stage Works Holst wrote a number of works for the theatre, their subjects reflecting his varied interests, from Hindu mythology to Shakespeare and the medieval world of the Wandering Scholar. From his final chamber opera The Perfect Fool, first staged in 1923, with its parodies of Verdi and Wagner, comes a better known ballet suite. The opera itself is seldom performed. Vocal and Choral Music As a choral conductor, Holst wrote a considerable amount of choral music, accompanied and unaccompanied, including arrangements of folk-songs, and a smaller number of solo songs. Orchestral Music By far the best known of all Holst's compositions is The Planets, a sequence of seven movements, reflecting the composer's interest in astrology and the generally attributed qualities of each, with Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity, providing the melody for a popular patriotic hymn, while Mars, The Bringer of War, suggests the period of composition, between 1914 and 1916. For string orchestra he wrote the St. Paul's Suite, completed in 1913, and in 1933 the Brook Green Suite. The two Suites for military band were written in 1911. His Suite de ballet, Opus 10, was written in 1899 and revised in 1912.

    Gustav Holst Biography
Gustav Holst Gustavus Theodore von Holst composer with Latvian (and some Spanish ) roots. Born in Cheltenham , where he was educated at Pate's Grammar School , he went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London . His best-known work is probably his orchestral suite The Planets , completed in , although the composer himself did not count it as one of his best creations and later often complained that other works were completely eclipsed by it. The Planets horoscope natal chart and dealt with the 'seven influences of destiny and constituents of our spirit .' Holst was especially influenced by a 19th-century astrologer called Raphael , whose book concerning the planets ' role in world affairs led Holst to develop the grand vision of the planets that made The Planets such an enduring success. Holst's relatively small output for the wind band guaranteed him a position as the medium's cornerstone, as seen in innumerable present-day programmes featuring his two
